Something Ihave not read anyone mention as a reason for price increase.. The fact that the economy around the globe is being destroyed. The value of the Dollar is getting lower and lower, our country's credit rating has gone from AAA+ to AAA, to now AA. Oh, did the News Media not mention this?? what a surprise.. Isuppose most of you out there will get defensive over my comments, but that really only comes from not knowing about what Isaid, and wanting to believe its not really true.

Most of the guys at my field have gone over to gas over the last several years, very few of us flying glow these days, I fly both but wouldn't buy another glow engine. This was due a lot to the cost of glow fuel prices going way up and the low cost of gas engines compared to glows. With the advent of the small gas engines for 60 size planes glow engines are about useless. Now with the price jump in kits I think this will pretty much kill the kit cutting industries.
For folks that can't cut there own and build from plans then maybe a kit cutter will be the thing? They still don't come with instructions and the prices are high but if there is a will there will be a way!

If you look at the kit prices in Gold you will see they have come down.

Your problem is you looking at the prices in US Dollars.

2002

Gold $319.00 per oz.

Tower Hobbies
Top Flite P-51D Gold Edition kit. $149.99 = .47oz of gold to buy kit.

2012

Gold $1,582.00 per oz

Top Flite P-51D Gold Edition kit. $199.98 = .12 oz of gold to buy kit.

So you see the real price for the kits has drastically fallen over the years.

The dollar is not as bad as it seems. Don't let the media talk you into another recession.
Most people are getting scared like a hoard of sheep and keep all their money. Less spending - less production - less jobs - lesser spending......
Take care of your own economy and don't worry about how the big guys trying to steal form you. The housing market made a few people very rich. Now we need to buy gold. And facebook shares...maybe balsa?
A while ago someone wanted to convince me how smart it would be to buy a timeshare, got a good laugh from that.
One problem we have to face is that the wages in China are going up fast. If they keep going, they will be equal to ours in a few years.
With the wages also the education, skills and efficiency increases, so there is some compensation.
I think we will see a slow but steady increase in prices on all Chinese products.
Then another 3rd world country will discover capitalism and we'll buy from them....

The sky is not falling until you believe in it. Tower is not the only place to buy kits, Google is your friend...

Thank you Jason!! That should make a lot of people happy. We can keep an eye open at that site and see how long before they jack up the prices and see if it the kits going up in price or Tower just jacking up the profit margin?

Darn ! I should have sold all my kits back then and bought gold, wait ten years, sell the gold, buy all new kits and walk away with thousands in my pocket. Enough to buy a brand new Futaba 18 MZ ! Too bad my crystal ball was on the blink.

What are you talking about? Have you seen old kit prices on ebay? A kit that was $59.95 ten years ago that sells new now for $149.99 goes for $240.00 on ebay. Idiots

I haven't seen any good deals on e-Bay in years. If you do an internet search you'll find much better deals.
The Super Tigre is a good example how lower demand and huge supply lowers the price.
Big 2 stroke glow engines are not selling, due to the fuel consumption. They are being replaced by gassers.
Now the demand for kits decreases, but so does the supply. Now they are rare and precious

I took all kinds of photos today of a lot of our machines. I was surprised to find 4 or 5 guys in the shop but there were some shop projects going on. We build custom items for residents, that is how we can afford the equipment. When something new or better hits the market we will often buy it. We have run out of room though. From October to about June the shop is very busy, this time of year it is empty, all the heat birds have flown to cooler climates.
Any other equipment you want to know about I probably have photos of. Our shop has pretty much everything you need. I have my own scroll saw and sander, I cut my own kits with those two items for years until I moved here. They work fine but it takes me longer and I can't cut all my own wood.
Gene

So you use 50k worth of equipment to save $40.00 on a kit? Not many people have that available to them.

Well Put. It is the dollar not the price of the products. Stuff is way cheaper today than 15 years ago. The dollar is worth less.

Yes, go look at page 4, post#99, I don't know where you get that $40.00 from. I just happen to have this club and equipment on hand. Once I took a High School wood working class in the evenings. It was just something the school did for people living in the area. We used all of the school equipment, I built a camper shell for my 50 Chev. Truck, that was fun. You should look into that. Up until last year I really didn't use my wood club for building/cutting kits. I did a lot of sanding there though instead of my little shop. I started cutting and sanding my kits and cutting my own wood stringers in there last year. Before that I used my scroll saw $100.00 and my sander $8.00 to cut my kits. I have build some big planes and some nice stand off scale planes using those two tools.
These days I have much better equipment at hand, yes, I am lucky to have it and most people don't. I cut all of my own wood now, last year I ordered it from Lone Star or National Balsa, no big deal, cutting my own doesn't save me all that much, it just makes it easier on me. Last week I needed some balsa stringers and two different sizes of sheeting. I saved myself a few bucks by not going to my LHS and taking it in the shorts on there prices and I saved myself some time by not having to order any wood. A three minute drive and a few minutes of shop time got me what I needed.
I have been scratch and plans building for decades, I have lived here for less then 6 years. Living here wasn't luck either, we looked around for a home for quite a while and picked this place. You should see the rest of the place, the wood shop is nothing!!!!!!!!!!! Just something I use a lot. The rest of the community would make most people crazy. It's that nice!!!

I'd rather pay a higher price to keep the kits around than I would so see them go away.
