K&B Sportster Club

RE: K&B Sportster Club
That is interesting. Thanks but no, I an pretty well set for parts at this time.
But all those rusted screws, crank etc. doesn't bode well for those parts. Whoever has the parts didn't take care of them.

RE: K&B Sportster Club
Yeah, might be like a box of RC helicopter parts I got off ebay one time.
"Big box of RC Helicopter replacement parts T-rex,Blade, RC chargers"
It it turned out to be a small box of "replaced" broken parts.
Yep, I had a box full of striped gears, bent mast, broken clamps,
twisted metal, and cracked plastic. The "RC chargers" where for those
crappy little $20 helis you get at the toy store.

I always hated it when someone would save broken parts and later try to sell them off to someone else. I guess it is a business mind kind of thingt.
Over the years my box of assorted retracts keeps getting heavier and heavier too. A lot of old Rohm Air stuff in there too.

Ran a MAS 3-blade 11X7 on the sandy .45 just now.
I got 9,600 RPM
5.1 pounds of thrust
63.8 MPH
.86 HP
634 Watts
For fun I tried the 12X8 MAS 3-blade on it.
6,400 RPM
3.2 pounds of thrust
48.4 MPH
.41 HP
303 Watts
So looks like the MAS 11x7 is the way to go for this engine.

I tried the MAS 3 blade 10X7 and didn't like it on my Aerostar, and switched back to the MAS 11X7. So I'll second the 11X7 .

OMG, what happened with this ebay auction?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/310411361309...84.m1423.l2649
Now I like Sportsters but 22 bids toping out at $313 for a 45 Sportster is nuts.
Better save a screen shot of this one for posterity.

WOW[X(][X(][X(]. For that price, the piston better be solid chrome, and the crankcase and prop driver should be 36k plated 1mm thick.. haha. I would pay maybe $50 for a nib/nos 45. I think they're $76 new at Mecoa. I personally want to collect the vintage non bronze bushed versions.
If anyone comes across any original K&B carbs for the .65, pass on the info to me. I am hoping to get my Mig-27 drone RTF for next summer and I want to power it with one of my sportsters, but I really want to stick with the original K&B carb, with the needle on the carb body. If by next year I havent come up with a pair of good K&B non-RNV carbs, I will buy Perry's. My hobby budget is kinda put on the shelf for awhile until I work some other things out otherwise I would have gotten at least one Perry to run the engine year.
(I know I've mentioned this a bazillion times before.. sorry. I'm forced to be an ultra-cheapskate for now at the discretion of my other half...... )

I have a set for ya QS.
PM me your address and I'll mail them out to you.
I'm replacing these with Perry Pump carbs.

Why replacing with pump carbs, anyway? Just curious.

These engine are going in a twin with the tanks mounted back at the CG of the wing and well under carb level.

They make a giant mess though. My runner spews a lot of fuel/oil from the front bushing, and it only has 2-3 gallons through it. The bushing is not worn, either. The sound makes up for the mess. I'll up the oil to 25% castor the next time I run it.

Yeah the 25% oil is great. You get all the smoke too. No need for a smoke system! LOL
After playing around with Diesels I will not be complaining about any transparent, odorless, and easy to wipe off glow residue.

The .65's are timed so low, high rpm is not their forté. They have Desaxe cylinders (or crankshafts?) too.

RE: K&B Sportster Club
If you set the crank counterweight so its "level" with the mounting lugs, the crankpin is offset to the left as you look in the backplate. Its not offset by much, but enough to be Desaxe AFAIC.
The timing numbers I have for the .65 are as follows, if you want to know.
Exhaust open 70 BBDC
closed 68 ABDC
Transfers/Boost open 63 BBDC
closed 56 ABDC
Crank port/induction port open at 40 BBDC
closed 40 ATDC
Blowdown is 8°
I got a ballpark geometric compression ratio of roughly 14.7:1 and trapped compression ratio of 11.3:1. I have a new 1cc syringe that I can still read the numbers on the side so I'll have to remeasure the head volume.

1 amen to that, brother. I might have to find some silver solder and make a MCP. My ST .90 needs one and the K&B's could use them too. The stock muffler doesn't do much justice.

Mousse Can Pipe. Homebrew type of "tuned" muffler of sorts.

RE: K&B Sportster Club
Well I got my little Twin Star airborne this week. This has 2 Sportster .20's on it. Those little motors pulled it well, these were new old stock I bought off EBAY last winter. Not eaxactly sure how old they are but the paper work said to return them to Downey Ca., that was in the 80's I think. I'm using 9x6 props, this may be a little much. I'll try some 9x 4's and see how it gets around. While breaking in these motors, I was getting about 20 minutes of run time on those little 4 oz tanks. This plane needs some speed when landing though.
