RE: Plettenberg 30-10? 30-9? or Advance 30-10?
I think either one is a great choice. I have a Xtra 30-10 now, mounted in the spinner. For my new plane I will try the Advance 30-10. I don't think you can go wrong with any Plettenberg. The Xtra 30-10 is already overpowered so good throttle management is key with the other two.

none of the above is helpful - just opinions so far...
has anyone got a like for like comparison regarding power/amps/weight etc.
thanks

Hi
Your plane will not be within the F3A weight limit (5 kg) with the suggested set-up. See my Amethyst build thread.
Regards
Burt

Hi Extraline,
Do you want to use the 21x14 prop, or the 20x13?
For the 21x14, I would recommend the 30-10 Evo, for the 20x13 I would recommend the 30-09 Evo. The 30-09 is a higher kV and will give you more RPM, so it is better for the smaller propeller. The 30-10 Evo weighs about 580g with the prop mounting hardware, I am not sure the weight of the 30-09, but it should not be any heavier than the 30-10.
The Advance 30-10 is not available yet, and so no information on how it compares.

RE: Plettenberg 30-10? 30-9? or Advance 30-10?
Hi. Look on page two, Oxai Amethyst build threat, my plane came out on 3950 grams and has to be flown with TP 4350 batteries (1030 grams). It is the new version and the kit weight was 2600 grams. The weight was in line with the plane as flown by Wolfgang Matt. He also has to fly his plane with the TP 4350. Regards Burt

RE: Plettenberg 30-10? 30-9? or Advance 30-10?
Hi flyf3a
Today i check my old Amethyst(old version).
Look the pictures.
top wing:586g
bottom wing:596g
fuselage(without powerbattery and RX battery):2489g
other part:76+12g
All:3759g
I use 6014 receiver
If i change receiver to 6008 and change the heavy spinner to CF spinner i can save 30g.

RE: Plettenberg 30-10? 30-9? or Advance 30-10?
Hello,
Sorry for asking in this thread.
Could you please post the ESC settings you are using for both the Plettenberg Xtra 30-10 EVO and the Xtra 30-9 EVO II? I'm particularly interested in the Castle Creations' controllers settings. I have the CC ICE2 HV80 and a rewound Plettenberg motor which should be very similar to the afore mentioned two and would like to get some opinions on first setting the ESC.
Which is the most efficient setting? Which makes both the motor and ESC stay cool? Which is most powerful? Which gives most RPM? You may also wish to mention the props you had most success with.
Thank you in advance!
Kind regards,
Nickolay

RE: Plettenberg 30-10? 30-9? or Advance 30-10?
Nickolay,
Low Timing
8 khz or OR for PWM
Do not exceed 30% for brake strength
You will not see much (if any) increase in power with more aggressive settings, but you may see some added heat and mis-timing in the air. Even on low timing, the HV80 can advance to 24 degrees IF the ESC "thinks" it is of benefit.

RE: Plettenberg 30-10? 30-9? or Advance 30-10?
On most combinations of plane, prop, and flying style, brake %s greater than 30% may result in abrupt restarts when the throttle is advanced after the brake was engaged. The restarts can be abrupt enough to kick loose the spinner or prop.

So I changed to a OS/Futaba esc in my Spark because that was in stock in Norway ( looked for a Jeti but out off stock) but so far wery happy with the Futaba , super soft from brake in any settings I have tried from 30% up to full stop (been up to 80 if I dont remberer wrong) anti spark and easy to set up with programmer.

Dave,
Can you post your ESC settings on your CC phoenix 80HV2. I just burned my 2nd CC ESC today. Just wanted to double check my settings. I am using Pletty Advance motor 20 degrees timing 30% brake.

RE: Plettenberg 30-10? 30-9? or Advance 30-10?
Castle esc's are different from others. As Dave stated above, use low timing. The esc will automatically advance timing if it thinks that is appropriate. A few people are having issues because of this.
When I contacted Castle I just got a message that I had to lower the brake strength .
Last weekend I was at the Swedish Nats one guy with Axi had the same issue and in the end the engine and esc broke down, cant say that this was the esc but the braking problems.
Maybe if you fly in the lower classes and the brake is not nescessary you will not have this problem but in P13 and the F13 you will have.
Cant see why peoples almost cover this problems..for me I end this discussion but I will never recomend this brand to anyone.....

Post 2 has info on settings for the ESC. Only thing that has changed since that post is the current software version is 4.01.
Rune,
I am Castle sponsored, so I have the most direct experience with the Castle line of ESCs, on both inrunners and outrunners. The brake problem (as you described it) is not unique to Castle; it happens with other brands as well - I am not trying to start a brand war, just pointing out the problem is not unique to Castle. When ESCs engage the brake, they are effectively shorting the motor wires together, and while this is happening, the ESC can not follow the timing of the motor. Going back to sensored motors and ESCs is one possible fix.
If your priority for an ESC is very strong braking power for a direct drive motor on a low drag plane, then I agree, the Castle may not be the best option. On the other hand, if your priorities are efficient, durable, programming ease, lots of features, low cost, and good customer service, Castle is very hard to beat in those respects.

Which one is better?
Which one is better?
I have owned, tested, and flown all 3 . . .
Extra 30-10 Evo
weight 585g
KV (rpm/volt) 220
ideal Pattern prop 20x13 to 22x14
Extra 30-9
weight 565g
Kv (rpm/volt) 235
ideal pattern prop 19x12 to 20x12
Advance 30-10
weight 600g
Kv (rpm/volt 230)
ideal Pattern prop 20x13 to 22x14
Advertised efficiency is the best for the Advance and real life data seems to show that to be the case.
Most Pattern folks who tried the 30-9 found it was too "hot"; the 30-10 Evo is a heavily "tried and tested" model; the 30-10 Advance is the newest and most efficient, but it's slightly heavier and slightly more difficult to mount. Either 30-10 (Advance or Evo) would be perfect.
