Bet you haven't got a turbine as big as this one in your backyard!

Running one of these engines on a transport stand in a confined area and then going near a spinning fan without a harness or intake guard in place makes me doubt the sanity of these guys ! These are seriously powerful engines (the RB211 -22b produced over 40,000 pounds of thrust for the TriStar) which should be treated with the very greatest respect. Obviously talented on the nuts and bolts side but operationally clueless. Darwin award candidates ?

Perhaps they should go to Hucknall (RR test facility and factory) or the test cell at Derby and see how RR mount and treat these engines !!

Regards,

David,

ex RB211 operator but only when very firmly bolted to a 757 !!

That's why they are mad!

If you look at the comments on the youtube vid a lot of people are commenting that they have no grill on the front so anything could get sucked in. Would love to see the house insurance claim if god forbid there was a problem.

And the mess it would have made

That clattering on rundown is typical of industrial rb211s starter gearing that we have on some of our power stations (and not the bearings). I presume its a similar mechanism on the aero versions!

Jeez...that is truly scary! Bet those guys wouldn't have even thought of doing that had they seen the pics that were doing the flight safety rounds last year of the aftermath of the american flightline mech who strayed a tad too close to an idling engine - the poor chap literally got swept off his feet and blended. Close proximity to Jet engine intakes of all kinds and sizes is to be avoided (and there are a few modellers with finger tips missing to prove the point too!).

Cheers,

Dick

Most fan engines rattle like that when they are not being powered. It's the fan shrouds about half way out the blades knocking together. The blades are ever so slightly free to wiggle so as a blade approaches the top of the circle it lies slightly to one side and as it passes the top its weight makes it flop over to the other side and the shroud clanks against the blade below. When the engine is running the centrifugal forces lock the blades into place so there is no movement.

Back in the days at St.Athan I remember us setting a challange on Tornado ground runs. We would secure the aircraft and run a single engine through reheat to carry out checks. Whilst observing for leaks etc under the relevent engine bay we would challange each other to see who could touch the furthest shock diamond in the exhaust stream with a 2 foot long stick. It was a real balls tester!

Plus during my days on Sea harriers I would often challange my apprentices to run across the rear wall of the tie down pan during full throttle ground runs. If they made it across they could have the rest of the day off. Not many got the day off! Most were blown 10 feet across the floor or they got drenched by the impending sunami from the lake that had gathered from a previous nights rainfall. Bloody hilarious at the time I guess the H&S nazi's would have had a field day ! LOL

I don't see a problem here, they built a concrete base to which its anchored and I didn't see anyone near the intake whilst it was running, at what I'm pretty sure was at or around ground idle.
They must be reasonably competent to achieve what they did.
Why,,,,now that's another question,,,,on the other hand why not!
They use air starters on the aviation version Dave.

Seems to have gone more smoothly than these guys! - John.
