Hey Gene, if you leave here then a lot of the enjoyment of visiting will disappear, but for sure we will stay in touch. As for me, I do have quite a lot to give thanks for to RCU, especially to the knowledgable posters that use to regularly visit the Gas Engines forum, some of who helped me a lot in my greener days. Several of them have moved on, but I guess that's the price of progress. Sure hope you don't follow suit.

I just did my first test run of posting photos at RCG, I posted 5 and it took 2.5 minutes. I keep going back and forth, they really don't have a place like RCUs for just building or just engines and types. I have run into a number of old friends though so catching up has been fun.
I'm just starting to complete wing number one and will be building both halves of wing number two. I'm in wing building mode right now. Had to go to my wood working club and cut some 1/16 sheeting and some sticks. Now I have to go back and cut some more sheeting.
These two planes are using up all my big wood blocks I'm using to make sheeting but the planes are getting close to being framed up.

I think Smitty would have something to say about that!! Talk to him about it. I started installing and setting up controls in his {#@} plane today and started the finish work on my wing. I have a bunch more to do but I should get started with #2s wing real soon. Both are set up with a push pull elevator and a pull/pull rudder. I need to get over to Bass Pro this week and pick up some more of the braided stainless leader I use to make my pull/pull systems with, I just ran out on the real light weight leader, time to stock up. Maybe even go into the Silverton that BP is attached to and have myself one of those real tall Gin and Tonics they give away. Only place in town that gives you a tall drink and not one of those usual two sippers like in most casino's!![8D] If the wind would quit blowing I would go out flying, wind advisories every day!! Really a windy year, winter and summer!

Still plugging away. Finally close to finished with the wings. Now I started the floats. Two sets of floats is really eating up the wood sheeting. I ran out of thin CA tonight so I will be working on the hardwood pieces like the fins and rudders that use epoxy.
I'm so glad to not be working on wings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gene,
What did you guys decide to do for power on these? If you get a chance...How about a close up picture on how the wing halves mount together or to the fuse? Is there a couple of shaped plywood "spars" that bring it all together?

I made the center section my mod area. As drawn the wing would fall apart on my first loop. Very weak area. Later I will take some photos but RCU is a hit and miss deal for photo posting. Depends on what server number you are on and then you can mayby get two, three max, photos posted unless you remove most of the pixles? That's why I went over to RCG. I go back and forth but all they have going for them is better servers.
Anyway, until I run the wires through the wing tubes I have both the wings center sections still open.
I'm on my way to get some CA today, an 8 ounce bottle, I have plane builds stacking up on me plus I want to build myself a gyro copter too, that looks like fun and I sure have the run out area to learn take offs and landings.

I tossed out the stock center 1/8 braces that are about useless and maqde up my own so they are just dihedral braces that go in two bays and are epoxyed to the spars, both main and rear Then I have the front brace added too that is also drilled and counter sunk for 1/4 X 20 screws. There is another block to be added. Then the center section is sheeted and planked. Look at all the room in that fuse and I already have two servos in there. This is a good size plane with lots of hand room.

Hi Gene,
I am enjoying your build. It's great to see how you've addressed some design issues and applied your improvements to the building process. As you have pointed out the wing center is very weak as designed. Mine broke on the third flight, fortunately it held together well enough to land it. I had to cut into the wing bottom and add plywood spar doublers. Once that was done the wing would hold up well during spins.

The rudder is massively effective on this plane if you build it with the plan dihedral. The ailerons would yaw mine a little but the rudder would cause it to tuck its nose down and turn very hard.

On mine the nose was extended one inch forward of the plans. I'd read that they tend to be tail heavy as designed for a seaplane. For mine which was a land plane version I needn't have extended the nose because it ended up nose heavy.

Keep the post and pictures coming. Best regards, Lou.

Lou, I located your build before I ever started slathering glue. I would love to talk to some people that have built and flown the float plane a lot and ask about the hugh side area this plane has when built to the plans as a floater. I'm betting it is a hand full in a cross wind with the fairings and floats mounted.
I have your build in my favorites so when I had any questions I went right to it and checked out what you did.By using the wing jig it made the wings a very easy build. The first plane had a close to perfect wing incidence and to my surprise the second plane came in dead on? I blame it on the fuse design and the wing jig. I have also added angle stock under the wing area on the fuse too so nothing can ever go out of square.
This is a fun build of a cool plane. I have one set of floats almost finished. Need to carve and hollow the float tips so they can get some lead installed if needed.
I think it would be an even better build if I was only doing one!

I have had the Swoose plans for several years but have not as yet started one. Your built has stimulated my interest. What power is appropriate for this airframe?

Nick Ziroil used a .50, it is a 60 size and weight plane, I just happen to have a nice SK .80 on hand I am using. I think it is over kill on power but I was thinking of the added weight to help get the CG without adding any lead. I also have a Bison pitts muffler for it. Plane #2 is going to be electric but the motor hasn't been chosen yet. Not mine, I'm just building the plane and not worrying about the set up or problems my friend may have with it. I am building in the mount and hatch for the battery and putting it forward. The plane does come out tail heavy as Nick built it. One trick is to lengthen the nose a couple inches. I'm almost ready to start mounting the floats. When that is done I can mount the engine and set the plane on the CG machine to see what is needed. Sometimes next week I should know.

Just finished one set of floats so I put them on one of the plnes to get an idea of the weight, so far it is at 4 pounds, I'm thinking about 6 pounds ready to fly for the electric powered one. Sure are a lot of floats hanging off the fuse!!!!

I know better then to take them on two at a time. I took off last week and never shot any glue onto wood. Tomorrow I will start on floats #2. That's 10 sheets of 3/32. These things suck up the wood and glue!!
Next build, a pair of Satyr's, yep, two of them again!!!

I have a feeling that you used what you had on hand, but do you have a rough idea of the quantity and size of wood that is needed for one of these planes and floats?

Thanks

Sorry. I first just started with what I had in the box, then I started taking my wood block to my wood club and started cutting it as I needed it. For the most part it is built with 3/32 sheeting, 1/4 sq. 1/4 X 1/2 sticks. Ply is 3/32 and 1/8 with 1/4 in fire wall. I just bought some Poplar and ripped a groove in it, the saw blade is 1/8 thick. I made the depth just under 5/32 and then slid the block over a little to get that 1/8 to 5/32 so I had the grooved wood for the float/ landing gear blocks.
I usually buy the plans and lay them out on my living room floor then figure out what I will need. Just call National Balsa and place an order. A bunch easier. I bought out a guys supply of 1/4 inch sheeting and have been cutting it into stringers. All I know is they are sucking up the 3/32 sheeting!!!

Smitty, When I have done or added something I post a photo or two here on RCU, the servers are so bad when trying to post photos I decided against doing a true build thread. It's usually berried in page two or three by the time I bring it up so you may not have seen it. In the next week or two I will be doing some of the finish work on the fuses and getting them contoured with more sheeting and planking.
Until I started building these I had forgotten how nice planking can come out, been a while. Setting up the floats will be the hardest part of this build. I had almost hit incidence on plane 1 and did hit it dead on with #2 but the floats will be time consuming getting them set. Once I have them set at zero incidence and sitting straight I plan on lifting the complete plane off the floats by a couple of degrees for that lifting incidence.

The planes are pretty much finished except for the sanding and final set up, for those that have PMed and asked what has been going on with the build, sorry for not posting any photos. You know how it goes after the planes are framed up, nothing looks like it has changed. I have had the floats on and discovered a mistake in the float wires, the length of the templates is way too long and I have to bend new wire. No big deal, I had to bend neew back wires to get the incidence of the floats corrected.
Today I took the floats over to my wood working club to sand off the fill coat, baby powder in my shop stinks and leaves a trail from the shop into the house!
They are glassed and just need to be steel wooled. About the only building part left is glassing up a pair of cowls.
Too bad these planes aren't ready to maiden. Our field, the DRY Lake bed is under about a foot or so of water at the moment.
Anyway, sorry about not posting up on this build. If RCU ever gets therre servers repaired so you can post photos I will be doing a build from MAN plans I really would like to do a build thread on, a complete how to on the Prime Cut plus 20. Can't wait to get to that build but I have to get my #1 Swoose glassed and painted before I move on to another build. Next build if the old time Saytr for a friend. I was going to do two again but I really want to get to the Prime Cut!

Very nice build Gene.. and good read here guys.. With the nostalgic look and lines.. it almost looks like a bit of history coming alive.. haha.. Very nice work .. great job. !

What weight of glass, and what brand of paint.. and type of applicator/spray rig will you be using?

I usually use 1/2 ounce glass and Deft Sanding Lacquer to put it down with but this time I was only able to locate 3/4 ounce glass, just as good and hard to tell the difference in weight anyway. I used 2 ounce cloth on the front half of the float bottoms then I used up the 1/2 ounce cloth I had on hand plus the 3/4 to finish the floats. They take almost a yard of cloth for four of them.
I will be using Latex paint from Lowe's, cheap and easy to get a color match. I use the cheap HVLP guns sold at Harbor Freight. When on sale these guns cost less to toss then clean if using anything other then water based paint. I want to try Nelsons water based clear over the latex for fuel proofing. Notice I keep using the term cheap? Fixed income is another term I use a lot!!
The one I built for a friend will probably be covered in Solartex? The new owner does a pretty good covering job and the Tex makes him look even better. He has had a couple of his planes on the cover of MAN over the years. He just no longer has the room or desire to build these days. I will finish his planes set up and let him do the finish sanding and covering.
I think I will go out now and bend the land LG. Pick up some more wire and bend new wire for the floats this week. If I have the wire on hand I may do it today. The mood to go into the shop today just hasn't hit me yet?? Just loving this start of Fall Weather here in the desert. Also waiting on the Dry Lake Bed to dry out again so I can get out and fly!! That storm last week was a big one and hit the area very hard. The LB had almost completely dried up just before this flood hit us. We had the best runway I had ever seen out there last week!! Then another monsoon hit us!
That's a YS 1.10 up front. Due to loosing fuel tank space after having to add some mount blocks the two stroke .80 I had for my plane wasn't going to work. The fuel tank is now located under the wing so I needed a pumper, the 110 is the smallest I have on hand. Really a lot of over kill but it may help out with the CG too?
