Default RE: SCRATCH BUILT P-38M NIGHT LIGHTNING

Alright the resin had set when I looked at this morning but I didn't use enough glass cloth and the edges wereto thin
so instead of waiting 12hrs for the areo marine resin once again I put several layers of heavy cloth and then
one layer of 2oz cloth using the 3M resin this time I didn't have to worrie about it melting the plug and it set in 30min.

So then I was able to pull the mold apart because NOW it was stiff and ridget I wasn't sure how these two resins would act w/ each other but it seams to be fine.
These photos are of the mold just after making while I drilled holes for the bolts and still need to be cleand up,
I'm trying to get a spinner glassed up today but then it's 12hrs of waiting for it to cure.

Thanks Casey & Randy...You guys mut have posted last night when I was uploading all of the photos
and I just noticed!

Well looking at the mold it has a few spots right at the seam but they will stick out when cast and will be easy to
remove w/ just a bit of sanding, The mold still has a coat of wax and release on it so instead of taking that off I just added more wax and will add three more coats then spray w/ hairspray and glass cast a spinner maybe able to make two today??

Amazing build you have going on here, i really liked all the plugs n molds that you made for this model as i have done same for my Constellations cowls, scoops and domes and nose gear doors!. Now this is representation of actual scratch build and it's builder...Kudos to you and i'll be watching your build as you go on, man you have speed!!!!!

Thank you very much props4ever It's been 413 days since I started this build but have not worked on it for quite a while I'm also building the mosquito posted here on universe warbirds and have just finished a Stinson reliant SR-9
witch is posted on RC Groups on my blog under splinterz25.

So I cut the glass for the spinner and another back plate and cast them, check out the progress and if you have any questions just ask!

After a few hrs. I went back w/ 3/8" dowl and removed as much of the puddle at the bottom of the cone as I could
I did this twice now the resin is getting real thick and the back plate is setting up as well have a look.

Again, extremely IMPRESSIVE work. One question - with the amount of detail you have added, I am wondering the accuracy of the Guillow's outline of the P-38. Was the outline accurate enough or did you have to use some three views to make "adjustments". This model TRULY IS the definition of "scratch built"!!! I have done some of the things you have done, but the details with the nose mounted guns, for example. is something else. I can't wait to see what you do with the cockpit!! Look forward to more "installments"!!!!!

Randy ... thanks for taking an intrest in my build and taking the time to comment.
The Guillows drawing is a scale drawing and I have had to make adjustments along the way, there was a guy on
this site G Pete he has built the only other P-38M model I've ever seen and he said something to me when I first started this build, anyway I have used his Ziroli P-38 and have look at many books and photos on the web.

The only reason I went this way is because there is nobody that sells a 1/8 scale wooden P-38 that is any kind of scale, there was a kit by yellow but ther few and far between and when I've seen one they wanted$$$ so I had already built the 1/16 scale kit and thought why not just make the whole thing myself.

And 413 days later here I am still have a lot to do yet and a great deal of details to add and parts yet to figuer out
but that's the challange and I love that part, so if you ever have an idea or question I don't mind any body giving there views as long as there with in reason.

Thanks again,

Bruce

The flaps will be functional I made my own flower flap hinges;
All of these parts were figured out while building and you will see that parts are cut off and cut in half or modifide in some way.

Gotta love auto correct huh? You type in "fowler" and it knows you really meant "flower". But wait, you meant "fowler flap hinges". Oh well, we knew what you meant.

Bruce,

Thank you for the kind words. I'm also working on a large scale model, an SU-34 and any bit of information I can learn from the masters I'm there reading and absorbing it. Looking forward to more posts.

Don't feel inadiquate...harlanb...Learn from these forums it's where I've learnd everything I know about modling and don't be afraid to try new things and make mistakes this is how we learn, I try to show when I do and what I do to fix them or what I did the second or third time I made that part. It's a bit different w/ this build thread because I had alread done most of this work, but if you keep watching the rest of this build you'll see me post my mistakes and corections just like I'm going to do in this next post!

Alright I un molded the spinner and I got abubble down the seam!but no worries I can fix it I mixed some 30 min
EPOXY glue and filled the few voids let it dry and wet sanded w/180 grit because of the wax on the mold now on the spinner the glue only stuck in the holes sand it smooth up to 320 grit and some glass is showing again no worries!
When I go to cast the next spinner I will put a light coat of resin on the out side of the spinner, because I using high quality casting resin it will flow out smooth and it should be fine. I'll show photos of this as I do it here is what it's looking like now.

I must say, that this is a true scratch built plane, thanks for showing it to us,..... I also enjoy building and this just keeps the blood flowing.... I do have a few questions.... I read that you scaled up the original drawings and then cut out the former and ribs.... were these laser cut or did you cut then by hand?? and how many copies of the drawings did you make to cut to make formers? please continue to show us your skills thanks

Thanks flyme2moon...the plans that come with that kit had two sets I made copys of both. then on one set it had all of the formers, ribs, longerons and spical parts so I used my home copier and ran off a few of each and w/ 3Mspray 77 put the ply in stacks of two and four w/ there patterns then cut them out w/ a band saw turend a belt sander upside down and made them smooth checking the edges were square, then went back and cut all of the groves for the stringers. When I was happy with the way they looked I used thinner and a wedge made of oak and split them apart and ending up wit parts that matched.
The second set of planes I was talking about showed how to make the scale tail fins, rudder, stab. and elv. I just coverd w/ 1/16" balsa instead of tissue.

Hi Bruce

Thank you so much for your taking the time to post your build.
I love the P 38.

I built the control line version when i was 16 (i think it was a Guillows) back in 1978.
It had two cox .049 s. Wrecked it the first time out.
Then got into cars and Girls.

I am a newbie just strarting into RC.
Love your build, you are were I want to be some day.

Subsribed,

Kevin
