Default Watch powered rc car

Just recently I was wondering if it would be possible to make a rc car that was powered the same way a wind up watch is. Wind up watches can last for hours with just a few turns and their gears that the mainspring turns always turn at the same rate and speed. Would it be possible to use the same mechanics to make a rc car move? Or would it be unreasonable because you would have to have a huge spring to actually make it move at a decent speed? Any thoughts on this are appreciated Thank you!

Before the electronic age, many toys were wind ups.

well ya, but wind up toys only run for like 10 sec. and can only go straight but now with electronics you could actually make it stop and move at different speeds and turn.

It sounds like a interesting project to build good luck with it.

How big of a spring would it have to be though?

You will have to experiment to find out the answer to that one.
They used to have mowers that you wound up and pushed a button to start them, the springs were about an inch wide wound up in a four inch or so shell. Finding something like that would be a good place to start, They would spin a 2hp motor for about 6 seconds if you gear it right you might get a minute or so out of it. Keep in mind it all about how much torque you need to drive the gear train and transmission and how much torque over what time the spring will provide. You will have to build a gearbox/throttle system to transfer the power from the spring to the wheels, and provide enough power to drive the car. Look at it this way: All you want to is build a watch with a transmission that will spin wheels, not hands forward, back, stop and go (using electronics for control).
Interesting project, a lot of work, but it sounds like a neat thing to try.

i like your idea it's a creative one. These days rc helicopters and aeromodelli elettricicontrolled by iphone and android are in the market,so if you successfully implement your idea then it will be a very unique and creative output.I have no idea about watch powered rc cars but if someone has detailed understanding of this idea he/she must help you.

Ya I might start to make it some time. Currently im just trying to figure out what gear ratios would make it move kind of fast and give it enough torque to move.
