Not a lot to show in progress just yet, but here are some pictures of the tank in full view. Also a photo of the inside of the lower hull with most of the original rc equipment removed. Oncve I get some parts in for it, the rest of the conversion will be documented here for all of you.

Here are the pics of the newly added fire button the the Futaba and the recoil mods to the Abrams..not ewasy, but effective. Vid coming up shortly.
I had to replace the motor that drove the recoil with a servo. Pay no attention to the strap tie, it is only giving support.the unit is bolted in on the front.

Joe, I see that you are going to perform some more magic with those golden hands on this Abrams.Looking forward to your progress on this metal
monster of a tank.Your servo conversion for recoil looks fine in the video.Have you decided upon which electronics system you will be installing
into her?

Charlie, I was in toucch with her owner today and he and I decided to go with a Sabertooth ESc to controll the drive for the tracks. We went with a small esc to use for the turret traverse. I decided to try to get the recoil done today so I don't have to battle with it later on in the build. All of it will be controlled via an Elmod Pro Flex board, complete with a blaster 4 sound board and CSI module to battle. If all goes according to plan, this thing should be a force to be reckoned with all around. powerful motors with chain drive, means no gears to strip and pleanty of power. I can dial in the Elmod with a hand held programmer to tweak all the parameters for the drive and turret functions also. Once we figure out how fast it is at the top end, it will go back to daryl for some new chain sprockets if needed to go even faster. We are looking in the 45-60mph scale speed, and I doubt we will be close to that with the current sprockets. I am liking this more and more....I never planned to buy an Abrams for myself....of course, now I have to have one...does this madness ever end???

Well, I got the parts in tonight for the Abrams.Very good experience with robotmarketplace.com.
The Sabertooth ESC has been installed and tested with the elmod flex pro board. It is a good match and has great control. We are still in the testing phases here. I planned ot have a vidoe of it runnign otnight, but it will have to wait. unfortunately, the tank is too fast to run inside at full speed and try to run a camera at the same time. At least for me. LOL
I did manage a couple of still shots for you guys though. Here is the dual battery setup. One is an 11.1 Lipo for the elmod board, and probably the turret as well.Still have not decided on that for sure. I may run it off the big battery for more speed. I'll play around with it when I get a chance.

LOL!!!!! I have to get it to a field to do any real testing. It is way too fast for my house. I will try to get seom good video of it at the local part this weekend. I can say that the Sabertooth has exceeded my expectations. It is a great little board, and it mates well to the Flex board from Elmod.

Joe, I think that your incorporating two batteries of two different voltages and capacities is a kind of "first time" for this forum.I know that some fellas run two batteries in paralell for highercurrent capacity, but of course they use batteries of the same capacity and voltage. In your example
though, you were able to employ two different capacities and voltages, each one assigned a different circuit.I have neverseen that arrangement used on this forum before.Good problem solving,Joe.

Great work Joe,

Your build is helping me with my all metal Mato Tiger it will have the EL MOD Flex board as well. This new board is going to open up a whole new

level for the Hobby, and give us the ability to run these heavy all metal tanks with all the power we need, plus all the sounds we want. Here are the specs

on what the New EL MOD Flex Board offers.

ThinkTank Tank Module PRO Flex is a high integrated control unit for tank models. This central unit is designed for the ambitious modeller and features wide connectivity for miscellaneous controls. It allows the use of external off-the-shelf ESCs for the chain drive. Thus the power limitation and motor types are only limited by the external ESCs. Even brushless motors may be easily used in association with the sophisticated solutions for tank vehicles provided by ElMod.

Requirements
•A tank model and a common RC-radio and receiver with four to eight channels.
*** •Two off-the-shelf reversible ESCs for the chain drive or one dual channel reversible ESC. ***

Scope of delivery

Tank Module PCB and all necessary cables for use with an RC receiver.

Recommended accessories

•Sound module ThinkTank Blaster
•Infrared combat module ThinkTank CSI (Optional)
•Adapter board for Tamiya® tanks (Optional, only if using a Tamiya upper hull)
•Tank profile programmer for personal computers PC Configurator (Optional)

Details

All key features at a glance:
•Standard servo outputs for off-the-shelf motor drivers for the chain drive offers the most possible flexibility concerning the motor power and motor technology.
•ElMod Physics Engine 2: ◦a driving experience of commanding a 40t vehicle by simulation of mass inert.

Yes Phil, the Felx board is proving to be a versatile addition to a system that already proven itself in many ways. The limits that were present in an elmod board previously have disappeared now, with the aspect of addtional power that can be supplied and the use of larger motors through external ESC's. This tank is by far the heaviest 1/16 tank I have worked with, and I had to find a way to give it enough power to produce both speed and torque so it could live up to its namesake. The Abrams tank is not one i am very familiar with, but this project has forced me to research and learn as much as I could in a short amount of time. the acceleration of the real one is quite amazing, given the fact that it weighs over 70 tons in combat form.Yet, it can run over twice the speed of anything in its weight class from WW2. Perhaps faster than that, as its top speed is still classified. the turret can turn at an astounding speed as well, and it has a gun stabilization unit that can keep on target at full speed over any terrain.Formidible is an understatement . This thing is a flat out killer. Now, I cannot give it everything that its 1:1 counterpart has, but I wanted to make it close. At least enough that other tankers think twice before attempting to trade blows with it. So far, mission accomplished. I ran into some trouble with the turret traverse, which I thought would be no problm.Wrong as usual. After hours of trying to get it functional through a Syren ESC, I was on the verge of giving up.I spoke to a couple of club mates, late into last night on the problem.Jim and Charlie, thank you both for your input. In the end it turned out to be a faulty capacitor on the motor that was giving me grief.I finally got it sorted out late last night, and tested it today, after Wil was gracious enough to bring me a battery charger capable of chraging this 18.5v LiPo.The turret is not completely functional, as is the drive system. All that's left is to get the leighting system wired up and test all the functions of the battle system and the speed of the tank outside. The rain started here, so I will have to wait for the latter testing stages.I did run into one other probelm, but I think it is now sorted out too.The track tension was too loose and I found some bent track link. I managed to get a link out of each side and adjust the tension pretty good.Again, it needs to be field tested to make certain there are no problems, and some pins may need to be replaced. This makes plenty of torque to damage the pins and even break them, I think. Time will tell, but so far, so good. Here are a few more shots of the Abrams and the electronics layout in the hull and turret.
