Default New ARSON 153mm EDF For Byron jets

I would like to welcome the new ARSON EDF, the ultimate electrical ducted fan unit. The ARSON EDF is a 153mm fan with a modular interchangeable 18 blade impeller. This impeller can be interchanged from the stock 18 blade to a 9 blade impeller or 6 blade fan system. This modular change can be done by removing the blades and adding a patented spacer to meet the needs of your desired model requirements.

As homage to the great R/C model builder Byron Leroy Godbersen, founder of the Byron Original, the ARSON EDF was designed based on the simplistic design of the Byron fan. A decision in 2007 to convert the Byron F-15 into an EDF with the introduction of more reliable and powerful batteries and motor units was implemented and upon it's completion was clear; the Byron F-15 had new life!

During the time spent operating the Byron F-15, there were notable deficiencies in the Byron fan itself. After many successful flights, the model was lost and upon review and inspection of the wreckage, it was determined that the Byron fan stators with the edf conversion failed, losing one engine in midflight which made for a spectacular hole in the ground. Thus, the quest to build what is now the ARSON EDF was initiated. Several factors were taken into account such as the same dimensions were needed as the Byron Fan, the Fan had to produce at least twice the thrust that the Byron/Scorpion combination was producing, it had to have the reliability and stability behind the power, and most of all, had to have character. This fan must be attractive enough to be proud to install in your model.

After years of trial and error a good concept began to develop and the final product has become a first of its kind. A modular EDF unit, the ARSON EDF, comes with a standard 18 blade impeller designed to transform itself to a 9 or 6 blade impeller to suit your EDF/Model requirements. By designing 2 different impeller spacers, the modeler can separate the fan and install spacers for their desired impeller design.

Depending on the response I receive on this post, this will gauge the production of the unit in the marketplace. If you have an interest in purchasing the ARSON EDF, send an email to [email protected] or you can send me a PM. I’ve included a few photos of the ARSON EDF which is scheduled to launch the production phase on or about December 1, 2012. Just in time for Christmas!! We will be posting videos and performance data of the prototype by October 1, 2012.

If you are also interested in following our progress, please visit our website and blog located at www.arsonedf.com starting September 1, 2012. In the meantime, send us an email to [email protected] or PM to receive updates and information.

Joe:

I think this is a wonderful idea. I am interested in your projected power with various motors mentioned above. It appears as though the initial testing with the motors mentioned above is yet to be performed. Is this correct? If so, when do you think you might have some test results? Do you plan to share the data on this thread? The kinds of things I think many are interested in are:

1. Power out on 12 and 14 S with each/or some of the motors above.
2. Amps/current draw with these motors on the 12 and 14S configuration
3. Efflx velocity for given tail pipe exhasut diamaters for the motors tested
4. Weight for fan with 6, 9 and 18 blades
5. Projected price for the fan assembly

Thanks for the effort and looking forward to the test results.

Ed

Ed,

The performance specs, videos, pricing and weight of the unit with and without the motor, ESC and battery packs will be posted early September. The pricing is very competitive and will be less than the EVF and some other smaller EDF systems. If this information becomes available sooner, I will post immediately on this thread.

We appreciate your interest.

Old Byron fan...

10s\100 amps\3700 watts 17lbs
12s\4100 watts\~20lbs

If you can keep the price of the rotor alone (hopefully) competitive (and still make good dough) and give thrust numbers any where near the old one with better sound these things will sell like hotcakes... no doubt

erh7771,

Can you advice where you got those performance specs for the Byron EDF (motor type, ESC). The reason for asking is because when I converted the Byron F-15 to EDF I was getting approximately 12-14lbs out of the fan on a 10S and 12S setup, scorpion HK 4035-630kv with a CC 110 ESC. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Done by BilldRC with big screamer, k 15lbs 11oz peak....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL...yer_detailpage

Efficiency confirmed here with better packs

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...postcount=1570

My own personal testing I got 12lbs of thrust at 2800 - ish watts on a SUPPO 540 motor\12s \ 65amps \65c 3300 mah nanos

If you get close to those number and can get a great sound then this should be good

The original sounds like someone choking 5 cats at the same time...and the cats do NOT like it ....and expressing themselves loudly

Angel,

I just opened the Byron F-20 and placed it on the table. I'm about to carbon fiber the formers shortly. Question, Who makes the T-38?

Cheers,

Joe:

Great Scott. . .you have been busy ! I apologize for not ringing in sooner however health issues and a visit to a hospital in North Carolina kept my attention diverted.

I have NIB a Byron T-33 which I would love to direct toward this effort with you. In the years I spent with Byron flying for them and later representing the eastern USA in a sales effort, I have a spot in my heart for the Byron product. Byron was a genious. . .enough said. I have savoured this kit for some time waiting for just the right time to break it open and start the process. Count me in ! You can keep in touch by direct email as you go forward.

Kind regards,
Eric

Great looking birds. Looking at your Tornado gallery when you remove the OS's and the fuel tanks you will have plenty of spare room inside the fuselage. Looking forward to watching the tornado fly again.

Eric,

Good to hear from you my friend. I'm sorry to hear about your health issues. Yes I've been busy since I got back, trying to stay busy designing and creating. I had no clue you flew for Byron? You must have some great stories. I agree with you I always admired Byron simplicity in all his models. I will send you an email or give you a call to check up on Shaggy.

Stay healthy my friend,

Cheers,
Joe

Keeping an eye on this one as I have a Byron F-16 with the scorpion conversion running on 12 cel. I installed the Eagle Tree downlink system and am not real happy with what it tells me.

Flight times of a little over 3 min
Max amp draw about 150 at WOT
Max watts 6200 (by memory with out looking at the files)
Max air speed in level flight 116

Most flights have been cut short because of battery temps going over 120 F. Some times they go to 135 F during heat soak after the flight and thats about as far as I want to push them.

I have two more Byron F-16s new in box but will not build them yet, waiting to get a good set up going in the test one first.

Have a lot of interest in this so keep us posted.

Gents,

I'm glad I posted the ARSON EDF thread when I did. I was going to wait until all the performance specs were done but I decided to post it early to see what kind of feedback I would get.

Today I find this thread From Changesun that has the same exact concept and design I've been working on for years. Coincidence? How can two people in different sides of the world have the same idea, same concept same design without knowing each other. But one of the variables here is that I'm working with 3 overseas companies to make the tooling for the ARSON. Two of them in Asia and one in South America. I don't see a South America company posting a new product identical to mine. Even color in the photo is exactly like the ARSON. Please let me know your honest thoughts.

I understand Changesun makes a lot of stuff for Hobby King. I sure won't be getting one from them.

I can see where this might take the wind out of your sails but I hope it works out for you. Good Luck!

Merv What Kv Scorpion? 630-800? 150A seems quite high for in flight. What airframe and batteries were you using?

Hi Dean

Scorpion 4035 - 630 KV

Battries = Venom 5000 mah 50c

Plane = Byron F-16

Speed Control = Castle 110 HV ( yes it dose handle the 150 amps ok)

I have screen shots of the downlink data but unless the OP would find this info of use we should start another thread. I don't want to hijack this one.

Mike:

I don't know if Joe is in a position to reply so I will chime in. He is out of country for a while on business and will get back to the fan when he returns stateside. If you send him a PM he will add you to his distribution list. He periodically sends out e-mails updating interested parties on the status of his fan.

Merv:

Just FYI, I have converted a Byron fan to EDF and it is installed in a Byron F-16. I installed an HET 800 series in-runner. Motor is 590KV and is putting out about 4200 watts on 12S at 94 amps. Using stock Byron exhaust duct outlet diameter, I am getting about 16 lbs. of thrust. RPM is 16K. Running Turnigy 6000 mah 35-70C 4S packs.
