I had a takeoff misshap with high rate on steering. Ran into grass and flipped. What's the best way to repair the fiberglass damage on wing and stabilizer?

Dear All
I am looking for a replacement canopy for my L39 the model is red white and blue so the blue frame type would be ideal however any colour would be considered.
Thanks
Gordon

I guess this thread will never die. I have an old Savex L-39 and have repainted it and want to start flying it again. I am using wire gear but would like to replace them with a set of trailing link gear. What is my best choice and where can I purchase a set?
Thanks for any help.

Tam has nice struts that may work unless you have Springair gear which don't have room for a strut next to the Cylinder.

Amazing!
The thread is back!
My friend whose L39 is pictured with mine on the first post, is still flying his L39 with the original Wren 44 manual start!
The motor is a reliable as ever and has never been back to Wren.
I have another friend who recently brought one and is flying it regularly ( I get a fly now and again)
I still love this combination, without a doubt one of the best out there. [8D]

Hi Ian, it's been a while...
No I don't make them anymore, but I can check if I can find some spare lying around.
I used them on both my Savex L39 and Savex F16. Both of them are still flying strong.

If you can find a set I will take them. You can PM me with the details.
It really says something about a plane that is still going strong for as long as this one has.

For anyone who is interested and is still flying the Savex L-39. Tam has installed a set of his trailing link gear on a Savex L-39 for a friend. I have converted mine to E-Flite electric retracts and am going to try a set of his gear on mine. I fly off a grass field and have found trailing link much more suitable.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Well, I received the trailing link struts from Tam. Excellent workmanship and fit. I was going to use E-Flite electric retracts but have found they are too deep and will not fit in the wing so I'm back to square one. I have a set of Spring-Air 301's but I want to go electric. Down and Locked will convert them for $500 which is pretty steep for $170 retracts. Does anyone know of another conversion kit that might work with Spring-Air or some electric retracts that will drop in?

They sure are close but still would require modification of the wing which I'm afraid to do. I think the wing is glassed and I don't want to mess it up.
It looks like more and more electric retracts are becoming available. Hopefully I can find a set that will fit or a conversion kit that will work with what I have got.
Thanks for the help Gordon.

Hi All,
I am in the process of converting my 301,s to electric. I have one working good so far just got to find the time to machine up parts for the other 2.
I am using the GBR JET controller.... very user friendly.
Kind Regards, Craig.

Craig would it be possible to show us how you are doing the conversion? If it's not to complicated I might try is myself. The best price I've been abe to get for converting a set is $500 USD. That's pretty expensive for a fairly inepensive set of retracts.

Hi Hal,
The motor and gearbox comes from POLOLU the part Number is 1597 it is 35:1 ratio.
You have to machine a new coupling..I used aluminium and you have to machine a new brass actuating pin..the reason being the thread in the original is very loose on 4-40 all thread rod.
I think th ally drive coupling is 15mm x 8.5mm diameter threaded rod end has 20 degree taper to clear trunion when pivoting.
I tapped 4-40 hole about 10mm deep so the drive rod screws into the coupling then red loctite and grub screw hold it.
Threading the drive gives a nice straight assembly.
Gear box shaft is 3mm dia.
I soldered some 4mm brass tube directly to the motor can and this acts as an mounting point and pivot point for the motor.
The sides of the retract have to be bent out a bit to clear the gearbox but not by a lot.
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards, Craig.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Just for interest.
This picture was taken the other day.
The model is the same one as the original picture (post 1).
The young girl ( Teresa) is also the same one, she is now 18 years old.
All doing well and model still flying on the original Wren 44 manual start (with a wand).
Turbine has never been back to Wren. [X(]

Hi Craig
That's a neat arrangement. How does the controller sense the endpoints of u/c travel?
Thanks

Hi Gordon,
End point is sensed electronically by stall current of motor when the end is reached.
The stall current can be adjusted in increments of .1amp fro .1 to 1.6 amps.
GBR JET controllers are very user friendly easy to program, small and at the right price too.
I now have all the gear operating, very smooth and reliable, now to install in plane and test.
Kind Regards, Craig.
