I put a Frank Bowman piston ring in a SuperTiger .75 engine and I broke my favorite prop, so I put a 14x8 prop on the .75 and to my surprize it turned it real good. I have the engine on a Funtana 100X. It flew good! Also I am sure that the engine with the Bowman ring is much better on glow fuel! Capt,n PS Frank...some photos!

I did have to raise my price on rings I make due to increases in cast iron, tooling, and shipping. The price list is listed below. I also made a mistake in last posting, I heat treat rings to 1,850 degrees F. not 850 degrees F. Thanks to all and have a Merry Christmas. Frank Bowman
Standard Rings up to .29 = $9.00 ea. USD
" " .30 - .65 = $10.00 ea. "
" " .66 - 1.999" bore = $11.00 ea. USD
" " 2.0" - 2.999" bore = $12.00 ea. USD
Dykes Ring up to .29 = $10.00 ea. USD
" " .30 - .65 = $11.00 ea. USD
" " .66 - 1.999" bore = $12.00 ea. USD
" " 2.0" - 2.999" bore = $13.00 ea. USD

That is still a real good deal when you compare it to the price of about anything RC or even a small bag of food products at a nearby store. Best Regards Capt,n

Default RE: Custom Piston Rings

When I got my first DLE-30 engine (side carb) I was told that replacing the stock ring with a Bowman ring would help quicken the break-in period, as well as improve the compression, ease of starting, and engine running temperature. After reading through allot of threads on the side carb version I figured it would be a good idea to replace the stock ring with a Bowman ring. I don't know how the engine would have run with the stock ring, but I know it starts great, and runs great with the Bowman ring, and I couldn't be happier.

Since then I've accumulated a few more DLE engines (DLE-20, (2) DLE-30's, and a DLE-55), and I'm wondering for somebody low on funds (or out of funds in my case lol) would a Bowman ring be necessary to achieve all the things listed above, or do the newer rear carb DLE engines run good out of the box with the stock rings?

I still would like to replace all the stock rings with Bowman rings in the future, as funds become available. But if they aren't necessary for a good starting, good running, engine (out of the box) I'd like to hold off on ordering them for now until I can better afford them.

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Mark

The Chinese rings tend to be hard and take a good while to break in, but many, many people are using the DLE engines with the stock rings without problems. You could always use the engines you have as they are, and then change them over to Bowman rings at some time in the future.

I too am a big fan of Bowman rings, but they are not absolutely necessary if you can't afford them at this time.

Thanks for the reply AV8TOR.

I was kind of hoping that was the case. I just wanted to make sure before making a decision.

My friend has 2 Webra 1.20 engines. From brand new one would hand start. The other engine needed to be started with a electric starter. I replaced the stock ring with a Ring from Frank Bowman...and it hand started first try. It had much more compression and ran great. Best rings on the planet for our RC engines. Capt,n

I'm already a believer John. I've repaired my friends Webra with new bearings and Frank's ring. Runs awesome!

Hand starts easily, always has...

Hey Capt,n,

I just spoke with Frank and he has rings for the M22 plus others, so I'm just waiting for TDA to hopefully give the green light for me to take the plunge.

That sounds good too me and I am sure Franks rings will be kind to the plating and not wear on it! Capt,n

I just read in another forum, a guy installed a Frank B. piston ring in a Mintor 22cc engine and gained over a 1000 RPM. Capt,n

Just email Frank. Some engines have the same bore size...a metric size and a lot of rings are the same width. He may have one already. He may need to make sure if the ring is pinned & provide for that. Capt,n
