Today was a great day in Litchfield at Route 66 Jets with blue sky, white puffy clouds, and a brisk wind right down the runway. Last night's storm knocked over a couple of port-a-potties (but there was containment) and loosened a tent flap but things were quickly put in order and the flying started with a vengeance as people tried to make up for lost time with yesterday afternoon's rain.

There was some mighty fancy flying all day. Lance Campbell brought his 14 foot long SR-71 and he did several flights each morning and even a couple of touch-and-goes. The drag chute and opening canopies really add extra realism to an already amazing model.

Andy Andrews (and Johnnie) brought Andy's fleet including the F-4, Comp-ARF Lightning, and his big Comp-ARF A-4 Skyhawk with will be finished in Blue Angels scheme for the JWM 2013 in Switzerland. This bird is BIG (the top of the fin is about four feet off the ground) and impressive with lots of surface detailing. Andy and Ben Burdin thrilled the crowd with a flight of their F-4's. Andy's is the big SM and Ben's is a Tom Cook model that has been around since the mid-80's.

Greg Wright was busy drilling holes in the sky with his Bandit-ARF and F-100. The hot section on this bird was done with titanium plating which appears to be the new standard as there was another F-100 on-site in mid-finish state but with the titanium already applied. Greg won the low pass contest with the Bandit.

Ben, Greg, and Patrick "Frosty" Frost put on a couple of thrilling flights of their Bandits along with Robert "Fastbro" and his Cheetah powered Flash. It was some mighty precise high speed flying. Ben's 4 foot high knife edge pass was spectacular though it appeared the Flash was a bit faster.

Dave "Goose" Brawley was there with his crew chief "Viper". Goose had a busy weekend of flying the Elan, the mighty quick KingCat, and offering his DX-18 programming expertise to anybody with the new radio. The KingCat sure looked great and didn't seem to even notice the wind and Dave did a couple of wheelie-style rollouts after nailing centerline on the landing.

Rod Snyder brought the Redbull JMP Hustler that looks as good as the day it rolled out of the paint shop. It's a great scheme that really shows up well against the sky and the smoke system adds to the presentation. Rod is a real gentleman and a great flyer. The other stunning sport scheme was Frosty's Cheetos Bandit. He repainted the B-ARF, added a light package including Ben Burdin lighted wingtanks, and custom vinyl decals. The "Dangerously Cheesy" paint scheme shows up very well. Frosty's stunning Flite Metal'd Patel F-86 Sabre flew in the afternoon with Greg Wright at the controls. Greg wow'd the crowd with a series of low flybys that were very impressive.

Nick "The Greek" Mitrakos and Sebastian Kowalski were down from Chicago with their fleets. Nick had the big Mirage and Johnnie Hernandez's SU-27 which will hopefully fly tomorrow. Sebastian brought his Eurofighter and Gripen as well as the Horizon Hobby man-cannon for spuds. Sorry, I don't have the Horizon part number for anyone wanting to order the spud-gun.

All in all, it's been a great event (it's not over yet) and a few of us will be getting in a few flights tomorrow morning before heading home. A big thank you to Andy Andrews for transporting my Mixed Reaction from Kentucky Jets to Route 66 and Roger Shipley for hosting me for a couple of days in Springfield. Thanks Goose for putting me up in your camper after we got locked in at the airport on Wed night. It would have been mighty chilly sleeping in the Focus.

Many thanks to Roger Shipley (who even had time for a big of Mibo A-10 flying), Jim Allen, and Jim Wright (Litchfield Airport) for all their work in hosting a great event. Next year's Route 66 will be right around the time that Roger et al will be headed back from the JWM in Switzerland so Jerry Crow graciously offered to be next year's CD.

Regards,

Jim

Roger and Jimbo,

As usual, we were glad we made it to Litchfield this year. We never leave un-happy. You guys know how to make it fun. Folks that couldn't make it this year missed some outstanding flying. I watched the large number of spectators, and they couldn't take their eyes off of the jets. The scale jets were impressive and all expertly flown. Midwest dudes can fly! Then for sport jets, between Randy Moore's Shok Jet flying and the Bandit/Flash/Lightning balls out flying, there was always a show going on. Good job Boyeeesss!!

Andy- Nothing better than talking guns and jets! Thanks for the look-see.

We missed our homie Scott Harris this trip but it was worth his absence, since while we drove west, he drove north to US Scale Masters and won Grand Champion. So we'll give him a pass just this time.

Chris

Wow , what a day. Saturday the flying was Non stop. Something exciting every minute. One of the Big highlights of the day was Rogers Big Gorgeous A-10 Wart Hog. Roger put it thru it paces pleasing the crowd. Thanks for all of the hard work. I also thought the Public were out in full force, and really saw a show. I want to thank all of the pilots that flew. What a show. FastBro, Frosty and Co, Turned up the heat with some incredible flying, Thanks Guys. Stunning what you can do with a Stock P-120. the turbine that put Jets on the map. My favorite Jet their was Andy's SM F-4.
I can't wait till next year. If laid Back flying is your thing this is your event.
Thanks again Roger you did it again.

We must also mention Big Mike Molinar from Cincy.. that dude drained the airport Jet A fuel tank.. He was airborne almost constantly.... I rolled out of the camper to his viper powered alarm clock every morning at sunup... rockin..

Also notable is Joe Westrich's SM Hawk.. He had a flawless Maiden before the spectators were allowed in, and had it dialed in in a couple mins.. that thing flew awesome..

For me, it was awesome turnin and burnin... this is the event my wren king cat loves... low rippin, long wheelie landings, Bandit slides, lots of smoke, and on site kero.... Thanks to R66 crew for another awesome weekend and to begin to wind down the midwest jet event season with one more to go at Octurbofest. Oh, and the parkzone P-51 foamie racing a jet... (guess who won, ...

I burned 5 Gallons of Smoke oil alone!!

Finally, There were no aircraft losses.. just bumps and bruises... A testament to the pilots, and the equipment reliability..... Goose out...

Johnnie and I had a blast! One of the most laid back events of the year with all of the flying you can get in. We really enjoyed seeing everyone for our last event of the year. The food was awesome! Smoked pork tenderloin with all of the fixings and pies for desert. Hat tip out to Roger and Jim for putting on a great event.

Here are some pics we took:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOKvO6gN8E4&feature=plcp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3kPinUnAtc&feature=plcp Here are some videos I shot on Saturday between my flights. I think Sebastian's F 22 and Andy's F 4 are tied for the fastest landings I have ever seen.
