RE: Trying some new gearboxes...UPDATE TO MOTOR/GEARBOX SPECS
Jim,yes I will be there and I`m bringing the Red October factory with me.I ran the smoke test out in the backyard this last Siunday.Last niteI posted it onto
youtube. It was a long video,8 minutes, but I haven`t seen it come up on youtubes site yet when I post in the link they gave me after the upload. When I ran the smoker, the first thing that came to mind was if there are any kids at the battlefield they will sure get a kick out of this.

RE: Trying some new gearboxes...UPDATE TO MOTOR/GEARBOX SPECS
I finally have the gearboxes permanently mounted and all the wiring sorted.
Tiger weighs in at 13 lbs with the gearboxes and metal tracks, still pulls a scale 22mph over a 25' run.
I'll try and find something appropriate to test the tanks climbing ability, lose traction on things I've tried so far.

Jim, you will get a chance to try out the traction on this Sunday. Will be bringing the 71/2 foot bridge with the new ramps.I think they are about 30 Deg.

I would like for you to report back on this subject after some considerable time on these new boxes.
All is good at first but I would like to re-visit them after they have had several hours on them.

Here is a pic of the final lay out.
The gearboxes are 2cm longer than the stock boxes, so I shortened the electronis deck enough to clear the motors and still use the original mount holes.
Standard stick battery packswould be to long, so I bought some stacked battery packs to fit.

Congratulations, beutiful engineering and a great installation my only concern is lubrication, those gears must run hot under load.

How many seconds does a battery last? I'd say minutes but I bet those things are power hungry.

The entire time was run on grass, manuvering (not straight line running) at full throttle.

So in real battling how long do you think it would last? Multiple battles would be my guess, because you wouldn't be running full speed the whole time, but what would the time be? 3 hours worth of battle time?

I'm not sure because there are some other variables when battling such as a flash unit draws more power then a led muzzle flash, your battle style, etc... That being said I would expect plenty of battle time on a single battery.

RE: Trying some new gearboxes...UPDATE TO MOTOR/GEARBOX SPECS
Here is a update to the motor/gearbox specs, I got an education on the gearboxes.
It turns out there are 2 versions of these gearbox set ups, "standard" and "off road".
The standard version has 12v motor and 18 to 1 gear reduction, the off road has 6v motor and 50 to 1 gear reduction.
I got my set off Ebay and received the standard version (no mention of different types in auction).
Everything was peaches and cream till I tried to get serious in the grass, then there were issues.
Any manuvers that were even slightly agressive would bog down the tank, sometimes to the point it would stall the tracks.
This is obviously not good, so I contacted the manufacturer about the issue.
I talked to Joe (Yellowshaker) about my issues with off road performance which he passed on to Bob (SevoblastETO).
He took it upon himself to warranty the gearboxes and take up the issue with the manufacturer.
Through his discussions with the manufacturer he learned of the different configurations and passed on the info.
Bob also asked Joe get my set at our battleday and swap out the motor and gear reduction for the "off road" set.
This was done and the gearboxes were back in the tank in 3 days.
All of the testing resultsother than initial speeds have been done with the "off road" set up.
The scale speed is slower, more in line with a Schumo geardown/Impact gearbox speedsranged from 15 to 18 mph (7.2v and 8.4v) on a fresh battery. The off road manuvering is excellent, even in tall grass and is still very quiet.
I just want to thank Bob and Joe for hooking me up (even though I didn't buy it from ETO), that was above and beyond customer service.

RE: Trying some new gearboxes...UPDATE TO MOTOR/GEARBOX SPECS
Even though Jim didn't buy the transmissions from me, I am now the exclusive for USA and have a good foot up in former SSSR also. Besides, Jim is a good friend and customer, so he gets ETO service. Problem with the set Jim got was as he stated, they are for 'on road' use and were 12v to boot. Ergo, with our nominal 7.2v Tamiya type systems the 12v motors just didn't have it for off road. Joey had one set of the 'off road' motors and reductions so I told him to give them to Jim and get 'em installed. Seems they work well in Jim's Tiger.
At this time the parcel with 6v and 50:1 reduction gearing is in transit to Joey. Once they arrive, the transmissions will be on the ETO sight. With the systems in Yellowshaker's hot little hands and my systems here, we'll experiment with them to get the optimum combination of motors and gear reductions. At this time, the 6v motors and 50:1 reductions seem to fill the bill, but you lads know me. I'm always experimenting with odds and ends to improve our drivability vs speed and hit requirements.
After a thorough examination of the basic TU set up, which is the same for all tanks, the differences for the various tanks only being the actual bolt on mount system and the final outdrive parts, I think that this is one system you will buy one time and your grandchildren will inherit them. They are that good. Time will tell, though, that and some running in the soon to come Rasputsiya, or 'season of mud' here in darkest Krim. If they survive that, then we got a cast iron winner.

RE: Trying some new gearboxes...UPDATE TO MOTOR/GEARBOX SPECS
Jimmy, they will be in the 230 euro range. When we get the new motors I'll base the dollar price on the exchange rate of that day. Problem with the euro/dollar rate of late is every time Merkel shaves her mustache or the French pres shaves his legs the dollar fluctuates.

That was a very informative report and discovery, so thanks for being the first!
Maybe this would be a good set up for my Elefant?

If you could get the sprockets to fit and the alignment sorted I think you'd be onto something there! I have Tamiya boxes with geardowns on mine and it's considerable better than the Hooben tus

RE: Trying some new gearboxes...UPDATE TO MOTOR/GEARBOX SPECS
i hope these things are as good as they look in the long run . i dont even run my tiger any more : P buying new transmissions every few months adds up specailly since you have to buy the whole dam thing and not just a set of gears.
