RE: kmp d3 due november 30th i just ordered one
Hi Everybody,
Just wanted to let you know that I flew my c47 yesterday. It flew really well, I will make a few minor adjustments and will fly again today. I ended up having to put 2-1/2 lbs of led in the nose for a total weight of 25lbs, cg @ 4" can't wait to fly it again. I do have some video and pictures which I will post later.

Bill, congrats on your maiden flt. Glad to hear all went well. Mine is still sitting on the bench. I've just got too many other things going on right now to work on it. Maybe during the holidays. Good to know the weight required to balance and the actual cg location. That's always a shot in the dark for a lot of ARF's. Looking forward to your video. Mike

Hi Mike,
Hopefully I get a couple pictures posted and a couple short videos, I had a friend (Chris the best pilot in our club) madien it for me. We didn't have the cowls on and we were having a little trouble with the left retract sticking so we flew it with gear down. otherwise it flew fantastic.

I have the ESM DC-3 which I purchased from ARF-Pro. It's basically the same, as I believe it is ultimatey manufactured by the same company in China. It's a well built arf for what an arf is. As with most arf's the instructions suck, and the DC-3 has one issue that I had to change and that is the tail wheel itself and the linkage that goes with it. I got the coverd wing set which is ok, but I wish I had spent the extra $ and gone with the built up wings. There was some one here that did go electric but don't recall the details. The problem with going electric would be easy access for battery exchange. You would probably have to cut a hatch in the fuse belly forward of the wing. Plus you will need a lot of extra weight to get it balanced, which with the size batteries needed to power this arf would provide. Just my $.02 ACF

Hi Guys,
I have just converted my DC3 into electric, earlier I had installed 2 Zenoah 20cc engines, but, that made this plane very heavy and also twitchy to fly.
Now, I am using 2 RIMFIRE motors with two, 6 Cell 5000 mAh LiPos. I have installed batteries right under the nose and their combined weight of 1.5 Kgs. perfectly balances the model.

I am also eyeing those new Evolution 10cc engines. I guess I will wait for 6 months, so that they will have enough time to iron out teething issues.

2 yrs in the making
All,
This is a great thread and gives some fantastic advice to those building this Kit...I've built 2 of these now... My first was the standard Kit and I left it as it came out the box in the Springbok Scheme which is the pic of the DC3 flying.
Unfortunately I lost this due to a rib failure where the outer wing joins to the inner wing.. There must have been some kind of failure in the rib on the outer section of the wing.. as it just came away from the wing.
Never known this before and never seen it happen to any other models so I think it was a one off.
I loved it so much though and it flies like a trainer it really does..!! Once you have got over the initial torgue and pull to the left its so easy to take off and fly round.
I have 2 x Laser 100 4 strokes in mine throwing 3 blade 14x6 props which give just about 3 mm clearance on the Fuz when spinning..Painted black with yellow tips they give a very realistic prop ring when running.
The second version had to be a C-47 for me... So I set about deciding which one.
I ended up going for the aircraft that flew Easy Company into Normandy on D-Day. It flew from RAF Uppotery airfield in the UK so has a very Historical relevance.
here are my pic... Hope you enjoy...

You are doing a fantastic job of building your C-47. I love the detail you're putting into it. I was a flight engineer on C-47s for 3 years while was in the Air Force. Best aircraft ever built.

Mine is ready to test fly now.. I was just waiting on a replacement Carb for one of the engines... I'll fit it and see how it runs before I take it over the airfield...
This is the link to the Yuotube video for the maiden flight of my first DC-3

Great video. You're right it seems like it flies very well and stable. Mine is still sitting on the bench waiting to be finished. I came out of retirement about 3-1/2 years ago and just haven't had time to really sit down and focus on finishing her. I fully retire the end of Oct. Will take a week or 2 break then get back on the project and finally finish her. Will keep you posted. Mike

Hi yankphan,
I Maidened mine yesterday, lost throttle on right engine, failed servo so engine went to idle, did a complete circuit and came in under power on left engine. not much rudder imput was required...
I'm using 14 x 9 Master Air screws with about 3/4 " clearence... Way over powered with the RCGF 20cc engines spinning the 14 x 9;s at 9400...
I ballanced mine at the 4 1/2'' mark which felt great... It fly's really well...

Nice... I didn't take mine out of the box yet but read that a 13" prop was biggest... Did you mount the engines center of the cowl? That rpm seems high... Run a xoar 3 blade to put more of a load on the engines. Those master airscrew props are too flexible... I'd use wooden props. Do you have a YouTube link ? Looks awesome... And one more question.... You said went to idle... Are you using a twin sync ?

Oh yeah... Did you use nose weight ? Is that the stock landing gear ? Did you use the stock control hardware.... I'm not crazy about the elevator pull pull, was thinking of using carbon rods ?
sorry for so many questions.

yankphan,
I also read 13" props were biggest untill i put a couple on, way to small for the 20cc's. yes, stock landing gear used, might replace them with retracts some day.
Not using twin sync, nthing fancy at all, have both engines on one channel mechanicaly adjusted to run together which they both do very well, Gas engines are very reliable set up properly. Nose weight is 0.8 kilos about 1.7 lbs with the CG at 4 3/4" felt good in the air...
I replaced most of the hardware with Dubro 4-40 including the pull pull cables... if you need any info as you build just ask, happy to help...

Thanks for your time. Question... I will be using the stock landing gear also until I get retracts. Do the stock wooden blocks get glued in place .... And if they do, would it be too late for retracts ? Not sure how that would work adding retracts later on.

yankphan,
Will send through lots of build pictures to your email... The stock wooden blocks get glued in and i think they will need to be removed to fit retracts for sure. If you do fit the standard stock landing gear i would recomend the main blocks be reinforced, the small block on top of the base mine came apart on ground testing just befor the maiden both sides and had to glue them in at the field they had very little glue from the factory...
