Midwest P-51D Mustang build, What Gas Engine
I am building a kit from 1991 that is still new. Question is I want to do a gas engine. Will a 20 size be too much for a 56" wing span, 5-6 lb plane. I have been fly electric planes this size but I now wouuld like to get into gas.
The kit was almost free so I am going to build it.
What are your thoughts from experiences?

I have the Sig P-51b at 66.9 in wing span and I fly it with a DLE-20 gas engine. It would be to big for your plane if it follows similar scale lines. I would not try to put a gasoline engine in your model. Like David said, yours is more designed arounf a .46-.55 Nitro a .60 max. Maybey a .72 Four stroke.

RCG 15cc. There is another smaller gas engine too but I don't recall the brand. You should ask gas engine questions in the gas engine forum where people are more up on what is new. These are people that are using these new products and will be a lot of help with questions. Gas engines are a sub forum in Giant Scale. Written in blue.

Below a 10 lb plane you might as well stay glow. Gas only makes sense beyond that; say in the .60 size planes and above. I have the DLE 20 in a 1/5 scale stearman and a 1/4 scale Ryan and a TF P-40 arf. The stearman flys scale like and the P-40 is a rocket

Thanks guys, as much as I hate it I will go with a glow 4 stroke. Once this airplane is worn in/out I will up scale the plans for a gasser.

The RCGF 15 is a rear carb beam mount engine and should suit your model quite well. Gone are the days when only glow power was considered for models below 10 lbs. as the 15-20 cc range of gas engines has come alive with several very good offerings. As Gray Beard suggested do a check over in the Gas Engine forum for more workable options.

Well I got a Saito FA-56GK. They made me deal on price as the same as the non-gk version.
So I will post after it is completed how badly over weight it is and how it effected everything
and what I did to fix or destroy it.

The Saito 56 is a great little engine. I think you'll find it's a great fit for that plane; Easy on fuel and four strokes just have a great sound. Now you just need to wander on over to the "club Saito thread and join in!
I had the Midwest Messerschmitt powered by an FA-56 for a long time and it was a pretty good flyer after I added the washout in the wings...prior to that it was a monster. I suspect the P-51 has the same design requirement for washout. If so, don't skip that part of the final touches.
