RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Thanks KaP2011, I used the "Helcat" method, worked well. The only problem was discovering that the left flap would not go all the way up without binding the servo. I ended up cutting off the flap, further beveling the top angle, recovering and reinstalling. What a pain!
Actually, this whole "ARF" has been way more time consuming than any other I've done with the exception of my gas Giant Supersportster, and that was due to my inexperience with a gas setup.
This plane is really neat, BUT it looks a bit flimsy....we'll see!

My experience was the opposite. It was a pretty easy build with plenty of room for installation. Like others, I had to stick the Rx battery down the tail. I did add some more glue to some of the structural joins (I think mine had been sitting in a box in a shop for a long time). It's a good flier and, while lightly built, pretty well designed and plenty robust for day to day use. You do need to have intermediate experience to avoid banging it onto the ground on landing, butwith experienceit is an easy and smooth lander and the stock set up is fine. Of course, many have improved the look of the plane through recovering and detailing, including undercarraige etc. In my view, the stock plane is a very good subject for this sort of improvement because of its relatively light build (eg can add more weight without upping the engine size and getting into an ever increasing weight cycle) and roomy construction (again don't need extensive and weighty structural additions just to support the modification).

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Many times I would get a call that a fellow pilot was down visiting or was intending to visit the area and would be interested in seeing the local club and visiting with fellow flyers. Often they did not have a plane with them. I had a 1/4 scale Spacewalker that was an excellent loaner in this case, not some trainer, and sport scale with some aerobatic capability. I could check them out on a buddy box and once convinced them could handle it I told them there’s the fuel and start box its yours to use for the day if you wish. Well after many years and many repairs it eventually had to be retired. Looking for an easy replacement I bought the Pawnee. Even though the plan form was similar to the Spacewalker it was not the same. It was just too skittish on landings to let out as a loaner. I ended up deciding it was just too light and filled the wing tube with lead. That extra weight made all the difference in the world. Now when the flaps were deployed the model settled slightly nose down and landed smooth as can be. Without flaps it landed similar to the old Spacewalker. Now it’s my newest loaner. The only thing else I did was to add more plastic landing gear straps.
Try filling that tube with lead and see how it tames the landings.

I have had the Pawnee for about 4 years. It is powered with an OS 46 AX with a custom made Bission Pitts muffler that exits at the rear bottom of the cowling not requiring any cutting for the exit. I also installed a DuBro tail wheel. The pilot is a Ken doll which does add some weight. The plane flies on the wing, not the prop and floats in with the flaps down touching down very gently. It is the first plane I have had that did not require any down elevator mixed in with flaps. In all of the time I have had the Pawnee, it has never had any damage and still looks new.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Hi all,
You all were right, it is a real nice flying plane. Maiden flight today, I really enjoyed it.
You all were also right about the bounce in the landing gear and the weak tail wheel. That leads me to two questions:
1. Is there a reasonably priced fix for the bounce? Our field is not smooth and what was a couple of nice main gear touchdowns became a real thrash as the plane was relaunched after hitting some of our "hills" in the runway. I think the Cub gear from Robart that has been mentioned is a real nice kit, BUT, $150 is something I can't do. Any cheaper fixes to take out the flex?
2. Ah yes, the tail wheel. I seem to have to learn the hard way at times and my last bounce from above ripped out the stock wheel. I'm in the process right now of installing a Dubro like some of you have and I can't see how the double horn that goes on the rudder stays in place. There are no holes for screws to hold it up. Do I drill and thru-bolt?
Thanks everybody!

Try filling that wing tube with lead it really tames the landing and will fly much better in any kind of wind. The wing tube is on the CofG so the added wieght will not effect balance. Add extra plastic landing gear straps to the landing gear cross wires on the fuse. Tail wheel no choice replaced it with a home made one similar to a Dubro.

I have a brand new fuselage for this plane that I am not going to use. It is missing the hatch, otherwise new and unused. Anyone interested? I will eventually post this over in the classified section.

I found the Pawnee to be a little anemic with the 52 so I thought the DLE20 would wake it up. Was a little worried about the extra weight but the Pawnee never knew It was added.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
I had to cut off the firewall and shorten the motorbox by 1". I doubled the thickness of the side walls by adding another layer of plywood to the inside and ran it back to the wing tube area. I found that rear engine mount from a friend of mine that works at 3D hobby shop. I don't know who made it but it sure saved a lot of weight over the Isomount I was going to use, plus it gave me a smaller foot print to mount to the firewall. I then made a plywood firewall and boxed it around the out side with hard wood, then added aluminum angles on the inside to tie the firewall to the engine box. Added tristock to the rear of the motor box. Of course everything is epoxied on. I was worried about the extra weight and CG. I did not have to add any weight to the tail but I had to open up th belly and make a battery tray to move the batteries to the rear of the plane. Mak sure you maintain the downward and right thrust angle. Measure twenty times glue once. The big wing handles the extra weight like its not even there. The plane is very fun to fly now. It added about 15 oz. to the plane.

I'm sorry I don't have anymore pictures. The plane is at a friends house right now, he is considering buying it. It will hover and knife edge fairly well. It looks funny seeing that plane hover. Vertical is out of sight. If you need more pics I will post some when I get it back. Any questions just let me know and I will do my best to explain it .

Just a few more photos of my pawnee and a few changes that I have made
put jury struts on the wings they fold down when the wings come off
enclosed the elevator controls
put the rudder and elevator servos down the back
recovered the whole plane with solatex
put a good tailwheel on can't remember where it came from
put a 15cc gas engine in and flys very scale at half throttle

It's not paint, but Ultratrim (HANU82700) will match quite well. It is quite thin and would be hard to tell from paint at any distance.

I'm certain if you posted your NIB plane in the classifides it would sell quickly. If I had the cash I would buy it.

Thanks for the response to my puttng the information about this NIB ARF Piper Pawnee in here in this Pawnee forum. Iwould like to let everyone know that I have already done just as you suggested that I include the plane in the RCUClassified ads.
Anyone interested in this ad please PM me and/or email me ASAP and I will return an answer to you about this sale or trade in a timely manner.
Thanks again,

Hi Jason
The pawnee flys like a dream with the 15cc in it
I did have the rcgf cnc mount model in it but changed to the beam mount
when they came out and man what a difference that was a bit more power and
no vibration very pleased with the motor
unfortunately I don't have a video at the moment but as soon as I can get someone
to come with me to take one I will be right
I live in the bush and there is only myself that flys on a nice open block about
3 miles from home even had a guy pull up with his grader one day and we cut a strip
on the block it is about 100 acres and it is classed as common land so anyone can use it
