GIANT 150" Ziroli Stuka BUILD THREAD
Well, I made 5 sets of plans and 3 of my friends have agreed to also build giant stukas! Maybe seeing some pics will get them motivated!
I hope to get the horizontal stab done tonight. I wasnt sure if I could get the servo's mounted flat and link to the elevators at the same point.
Boy did I underestimate the size of this baby!
So, workshop is cleaned, plans are ready, bought some wood and here we go!!!!

A plane this big, why don't you go for redundancy and use a servo on each half of the elevator. Doing away with the quarter inch wire elevator joiner will almost make up for the weight of the second servo...

The only inline twin or more I could find is the ZDZ. They have a two cylinder 160cc, but it looks like the carbs wont fit (with the engine mounted inverted, they would poke out the top of the cowl...). But I think this one will...

WOW! That is sweet! I cant imagine what went into designing and having those parts made. I designed a gear reduction for a fuji 86 twin and I learned quick how difficult it is to have some parts made.
Cant wait to see it completed!

It is the perfect size. The larger wood stringers are fitting great. I couldnt wait and went to hobbytown and bought enough wood to do the horiz. stab. I will get the rest from Lone Star Balsa. I cant wait to get these planes flying!

Ok, sorry for taking so much time on this part, but besides the firewall and engine mounting, the mounting of the elevator servo's is the most important part to me. I can recover from most failures except loosing elevator control, so I am very anal about how I connect them.
I laminated the inside with 1/16" ply. I cut out the mounting plate on my scroll saw, then glued in the outside part on to the sheeting. I then carefully cut out the balsa sheeting in the big square "hole". I glued the balsa to the mounting plate, then cut some thin aluminum (CUT IT ABOUT 1/4" LARGER TO COVER UP THE MOUNTING PLATE CUT LINES) (this Aluminum is really cheap and great stuff from any hardware store, you can get it in rolls of 12"x6ft (Ask for Aluminum flashing). Just make sure to buy some heavy cutting shears for cutting it and if you ever glue it (I use CA), make SURE YOU SAND THE SIDE GETTING GLUED with about 160grit. I have had it on my planes for many years and it will rip off the wood before coming off.
I used a small button head screw to secure the hardwood blocks that I first epoxied to the mounting plate (I dont trust just the epoxy for this). Since it goes thru the alum. it is very secure. Make sure you score the hardwood blocks and mounting plate first with an exacto blade before clamping (you can see the score lines on the pic with the clamps), it helps the expoxy penetrate.

Been slammed with kids, but I did manage to finish the elevators and horiz. stab. Will try to get the vert stab and rudder going this weekend!
I ended up using a piece of 1/4 ply to reinforce the control horn, it wasnt very big, but I could have saved a little weight and I should have used a small 1/8" piece and double it up where the control horn will screws in.... oh well.
I did end up gluing a 1/16" piece of ply on top the balsa wedge to reduce the possibility of the pin type hinge breaking out the top of the balsa.

Well, started cutting the formers. I just have to take my time and think through the few pieces of wood that will not be sized up. The crutches will still be 1/8", so I had to modify a couple lines (the pens are pointing to them...). I usually scroll saw close to the cut lines, then sand them down on my belt/disk sander.

Ok, need to pose a question to you builders out there. The fuse crutch and balsa stringers for the fuse. There are a few ways I can go as to the sizes and wood type...
Choice A- I can keep the same dimensions as what the original plans have (crutch is 1/4"x1/2" hard balsa)
or
Choice B- Blow up the sizes like everything else (3/8:x3/4" hard balsa)
or
Choice C- Use 3/8" square basswood (which I really like, but it is 4-5 times heavier, and I have heard the crutch really does not add any strength...)
Same with the stringers, the original calls for 1/8"x1/4" balsa, I can use the 1.5 scale factor like the rest of the plane and use 3/16x3/8 balsa or I can also stagger them hard wood and use 6 or so basswood stringers...
so, original size, blown up size, or original size with a few basswood stringers.... humm..
A friend blew up a ziroli corsair and used all the original sizes of balsa, it seems plenty strong to me, it would make the tail so much lighter, plus this stuka will not be doing any snap rolls or high speed banks like a pattern plane).
Thoughts???

Hi Pahtreek, Always enjoy watching your builds.
I think the stock sizes will be strong enough. The fuse gains alot of strength from the sheeting and fiberglass. Most of the time we over engineer our models. Your going to have alot of airplane aft of the CG on this one. I would think anything you can do to keep it light will pay off big in the end.

I agree about the over engineering. I am always astounded when I look inside a giant pattern plane. They pull so many g's... and they have hardly anything inside them. I really want to keep this plane under 50 pounds.
I will use standard balsa sizes, I will probably swap out 5 or 6 stringers for some basswood just in case, but I will probably so much smaller on those, maybe use 3/16" square to help with any weight issues.
