Thank Hairy46, Flying with Frank Noll was great, he's such a precise and consistent pilot. I was going to sell the Spit but changed my mind after all the fun I had with it!

Well it sure was a treat! I was up there but did not fly. We had a very busy summer with all the fires that I was working 7 days a week 14-16 hour days and could not get the time to put the finish touches on the ones I wanted to bring. I had a couple smaller that I could have brought but was not sure if I was going to make it till last minut. But did get to call for a couple freinds and spent most time in the pits i had a great time. I will have the planes ready for next year.

Nice Pic with the radar tower (Britains Secret weapon) in the background. Yes I know it's not a radar tower but it looks cool.

INCREDIBLE, OVERWHELMING PURE SPITFIRE EXCITEMENT can be brought up by GOOGLING, "A deal has been struck with Burma [Mayanmar] for 60 World War II SPITFIRE FIGHTER PLANES." Imagine, a Bader Big Wing flying in close formation (60 planes) swooping down on a hapless aviation audience - what a show that would be!

I literally spent hours reading Spitfire informaion, enjoying pictures and historical discussions instead of posting on the Spitfire Brotherhood as I had intended. Advertising for the Brotherhood and it's good influence on improving culture had to be put on my FB Wall first. The above "GOOGLING suggestion" and some provocative ideas were added to entice new Spitfire Brotherhood participants.

First of all, thanks for those neat decals, Chad.

WARBIRDRCER, thanks for maintaining such a great thread! I will be sending you a check in the mail (I don't trust anything about the web yet for reasons recorded on my FB & fighter posts.) Please send me an address and don't send a T-shirt until you receive payment for it. Yes my snail mail gets messed with also. Funny how us suppressed energy technology fans tend to have so much trouble, isn't it?!

Got shot off the web before I could finish this post - more If I don't get shot down again.

Captain Sakai, I had some fun stuff composed about our friendly splendid little air war that got blasted away in this latest web outrage and I can not now conjure up the enthusiasm needed to engage in combat, so I will take some R & R; and then seek a strategic advantage before attempting to take you out at some point in the future when you least expect it. In the meantime please don't lose that very entertaining Japanese accent. I must experience it at least one more time as your vanquished Spit death spirials on its final last few seconds of flight.

Breaking off the attack for now.

Out.

THANK YOU FELLOW VETERANS FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE AND WHAT MANY OF YOU ARE STILL DOING IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY! THE INSPIRATION PROVIDED BY YOUR INFLUENCE IS NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER IN THE TROUBLING TIMES THAT ARE NOW UPON US!

There are 'Brotherhood' stickers in Australia!!!
Thanks Chad, they look great. Just the right size and the spare will be handy for practising application.
I will definitely follow the instructions.

Hey gang what about this Spitfire fly in? Is it next week end? Not much been said about it.

Cheers,

Brad

Brad,

You are correct. Who ever wants to participate just go to the field with your Spitfire starting on Friday October 26th thru Sunday October 28th and fly your Spitfire. If you choose, take a couple of photos and post them here. It has been awhile since we have heard from some of our squadron, so maybe this will vector them back to our Squadron Headquarters (This Thread).

Default RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)

Hi all,
What a wealth of information to be found here.
I found this thread by searching for retract modification. (Shim as suggested, just to be on the safe side.)
I am presently building a Hangar 9 Spitfire 60 with a SAITO FA 100 to power it.
I will be using a master air screw 14X7X3. Read quite a few reports of other pilots using it for the Spit. A Keleo exhaust is on order since Oct. 16, but Kelvin is running about 4-6 weeks on the build and then shipping time. No problem though. I am sure I will not be able to fly it any time soon until spring next year. I am not sure if I can wait this long. :-( . I will be using a True turn 3.5" parabolic 3 blade spinner that should be in on Friday. Not sure if I will get it powder coated white or go with a black anodized finish.
Did any of you notice that the balsa sheeting is very brittle?
I have a couple of spots on the wing and the fuselage that split just by touching it.
Also the elevator push rod sleeve is curved too much at the rear and binds the push rod. I will have to take it out and redo.
I would like to add machine gun openings to the L.E. of the wing. As per MKII A specs. 4 each side.
Any suggestions on how to do this or what material to use?
I love the way this plane looks.
Hope it will Maiden as well as it looks next year.
Andreas
P.S. count me in on the Spitfire Brotherhood please.

This is my build from a week ago sofar.
Still have the wrong Spinner back plate (4") on to get cowl/spinner spacing properly. Will update when new parts arrive and
planned cockpit mod has been done.

You're going to love that hangar nine Spitfire. I had one for three years and flew approximately 15 gallons of nitro through it. The only thing that you would want to fix immediately is get rid of the wire struts and put Robarte struts on

I think you are right 77chickenhawk.
On reading all these threads, it is mostly suggested to do so.

Do you think I will still have to shim the retracts forward when I go with the Robarts
to counter act the known nose over problem?

Facia, I have the very same Spit you are describing. Saito, Keloe, prop ect. It flys great. I balanced per the instructions and have never noticed a nose-over problem. I have(finally) learned to be gentel with the throttle on take-offs and not put it to the floor. It makes take-offs much more pleasent and reduces nose-overs.

I have added machine guns (brass tubing painted flat black) and done a fair amount of airbrushing on mine to further detail it. To me, the biggest improvement you can make to the looks of the plane is give it a coat of Top-Flite Flat Lustercoat to get rid of the shine. It really improves the looks. If you do that, just be careful to go lightly as it also adds weight to the plane.

You well absolutely love the Keloe exhaust. Go slow and careful when you cut (dremel) the cowl for it. There is nothing quite like running the engine and gunning it to watch it belch smoke and gas out the exhausts. I will never admit to how much time I have spent doing that. Hint...it's even better with the engine set a little rich!!!

Have fun, you will love this plane.

@Tom,
glad you like your Spit.
Thank you for the heads up on the throttle.
I am practicing with Phoenix -> crash on landing almost everytime.
Flying the Spit on Clearview -> lands like butter and floats in everytime.
I am sure itching. Why couldn't I have gotten it in May.
I might have to be prepared for the Frozen Fingers Fun Fly on Jan. 1.

I am concerned with the nose overs only on landing as about 90% of vids on youtube show that.
However, there is some really super landings as well but few and far in between. Hm...
There is only so much worrying to do. I'll have to go out and just do it.
Never had a nose over problem with my other tail dragger H9 PTS P51 (about 30 flights since July),
but that landing gear protrudes quite a bit forward of the leading edge.

Thanks for the warning on the Exhaust cutouts. Much appreciated.
As the saying goes: I cut it and I cut it, and it's still too short.

I have to be honest, I have checked out Canadian Tire for the machine gun barrels a.k.a. Brake tubing that
has flanges on both ends. I figure, that would look cool once it's cut and sunk into
the leading edge. I am just not sure what size of opening/diameter I should use.
What size of diameter are you using?
I can get the scale placement for them from pictures of real Spits, by measurement off the
holes and convert to my size of wing, but the diameter size is kind of hard to get.

I can see that I will have a lot of detailing left to do.
The Top-Flite Flat Lustercoat sounds about right. Will try that as well.

I sure hope it won't be like a build report on the forum where the poor fellow built his Spit for 2 years,
then Maidens it and has a Video of it. All but 11 sec. Ouch..... I felt so bad for him.

facia;

I have the same set up on my H9 Spit. At the end of a flying day, you plane will be a mess, but, that's how a warbird should look!! I am running Cool Power 15% helimix in my Saito. I love the takeoff and low high speed fly-by and see two trail of smoke behind the bird. Tom was right about the throttle. I hit full throttle after the gear have left the runway with a nice smooth climb-out. Once you retract the gear, she will pickup speed fast. Right now I am building the Top Flite Spirtfire 60 kit. Good luck on your maiden and please let the Brothers know how it went!!

I bought a set of electric retracts for mine this time around since I'm rebuilding it after a crash. New wings, but the gear is S($_. So... I'll use the electric retracts, shim them just like I did the mechs, and get good LG wires for them.
