Greg with a jet. I gotta see this ... No more hovering in the cornfield unless your making popcorn
Jets are to easy! Make it groove like a pattern plane! Yes, they do hover!
Greg,
You know SM has been testing and developing the Harrier; perhaps there's hope for your transition into the wonderful world of jets yet!

Is the leading edge flap on the 18 hinged on the top or the bottom? I cannot find a picture that shows this area clearly.

I believe it is at the top but Joe D. Just borrowed my book so I can't check. Maybe Joe will chime in with that answer or a picture.

TWOOD,

All of the photos that we have indicate that it's hinged from the top.

I like those colors. I have not seen that scheme modeled before here in the states.

I hear you. There is a lot of talk and not a lot of build going on right now.

I have a 1/6 scale F-16 that is on my bench right now. I need to get it finished here in a week and I can start back on the F-18s.

I believe they are hinged on the center line given how they are actuated in the actual plane (a rotary drive mechanism). I will look for a picture later.

They are hinged on top. If you can get your hands on a book called 'Uncovering the F/A-18 A/B/C/D Hornet' by Danny Coremans and Nico Deboeck you'll find it chalk full of great detail photos. I believe it to be a 'must' if you're build a scale F-18. Will enjoy watching these come together.

Sean,

Joe W. recently received "Uncovering the F/A-18..." book. Wow, this book is outstanding and will definitely have all of the scale reference detail we could want!!!

I just ordered a copy for myself; It will be extremely helpful as I build the cockpits.

Thanks for the tip, Sean!

No problem Joe, glad you will find it useful. I have one for the F-16 which is equally as impressive. I've been nagging Danny to finish his F-104 book for about 3 years and about a month ago it was finally released. . Mine is on the way and I'm SURE it will make build a second F104.
Will enjoy watching your builds this winter. Even though the kit is quite old, I'm convinced it is still one of the best, if not the best, F18 kit available. Enjoy it.

OK.... I got the 1/6 scale F-16 finished and out of my basement. I can finally get on with the F-18 building.

I pulled everything out and did an inventory check. Since I have two of everything, I need to keep this project organized. There are left and right parts due to a slight asymetric fuselage. The 3rd one is about 70 percent complete already. I build this early in the year and will set it aside until I get the other two caught up.

I did find some minor damage from shipping. Its just aft of the left vert fin. I will fix that up nice and strong.

BTW...Thanks Shaun, she is cute but real mean. It made me nervous letting her hold my P200.

Two of us are going to have wing tanks, but not droppable. Mike is going with the BA scheme so nothing under the wings for him.

The tanks and pylons are real light. I would like to strengthen the pylons. I will get into that much later.

It looks like the new kits have some added carbon fiber within the last few years. The 3rd F-18 doesn't have quite as much CF and was purchased maybe 4 years ago.

We already have some of the CF scale flap hinged fabricated.

I like the tail control tork rods..... made of Ti and with a long arm for good leverage.

I have a lot of seams to sand down, fill and sand down again....[:'(] This has to be the least desirable part of the build. I have noticed Y/A no longer cuts out the main gear door openings. I'm not sure why.

Does anyone out there think that the JR8711 is not enough servo for the elevators with a P200 on board?
