Nice [8D]

Any mods to strengthen the airframe ?
Yes , I added spars on the wings , I sheeted all the airplane wings , stab and rudders and I used enough fiberglass cloth where the wings meets the fuselage , I hope that be enough for the stress it will have.

I started a new build thread for my big Shrike over in the "Builders Workshop" forum on "the other forum." Or you can just google for it or PM me.

This is going to be roughly 40" span, electric, with retracts.

Hey Guys,

Just a heads-up for you club members who are looking for Shrike 40 Plans.  I've got a couple sets with templates and instruction books.  If anyone needs a set, let me know.  I bought these from a guy who used to duplicate them and can't find him anymore. I'll be keeping one set for myself to copy when I run out so more can be made.

Maiden flight is planned for Monday after work. It's 4 pounds 8 oz ready to fly (40 size), with a 4S 3200 in it. I'll be taking pictures of it then and hope to get a little video, too.

It's only taken 3 years to get to this one to this point.

Maiden flight happened Wednesday night due to weather. David Payne had the honors. A few clicks of trim and then the started playing. One of the guys got a video of it - as soon as he posts it I'll put up a link.

Short version: Great flyer! The retracts made a huge difference in power settings, the enlarged/outboard elevators gave me the authority for landing that all my previous Shrikes have lacked. I'm happy!

Thanks. I have the telemetry data for it now. It cruises about 95, and I've pushed it (just a gentle nudge) to 115. I want to get some telemetry data on the current, and then may bump it up to the 1000Kv heli motor.

I'm loving it!

Cool Add me to the club!

Hello, just a quick note about my Shrike 40. I got it an auction a few years back and it sat in my garage until a couple of weeks ago. I pulled it down, cleaned it up and went flying. It needed to be recovered, it was so bad that the covering was pelling off from the trailing edge. So during my recovering project I decided to hang a couple of dummy drop bombs from it. I should have it covered and ready to go by the end of the week. I'm trying to decide wether to stick with the K&B 40 that was in it or drop in an Italian Supertigre 40. What do you all think?

Thanks,

Bill

Wink Covering Started...

Hello all, tonight is our monthly club meeting and I just had to get some covering done last night to show off my shrike. So I went through the covering material I have at home and came up with the following color scheme. The fuselage will be a dark royal/navy blue. The bottom of the wings will be a florescent/ high contrast orange. The top of the wings will be a bright/metallic like green. I almost forgot the wing tips are a bright yellow. I haven't decided what my vertical stabilizer's will be. I might go with bright yellow there as well. There should be no doubt about which side is up! Enjoy the pics.

Now that the forum is working again somewhat.... I'll post some more pictures!

Bill

Talking Covering Done!

Hello Shrike Club!

Well the covering is done except for a few minor details. I won't recieve my new canopy until Monday. But that won't prevent it from flying this weekend! I already had to do a "patch" job on it. My iron slipt while I was tacking down the excess covering from a pushrod exit and it punctured part of my covering, o well, life happens! The stars were the first ones I made, I think they turned out pretty good! One thing is for sure, if I can't tell which side is up then either I'm too blind to be flying or it's too far away! I still need to drop in the engine, a Super Tigre 40 (Italian made) and my reciever. That will take me all of about an hour tonight. She will be ready to fly tomorrow.... Enjoy the pictures!

Talking Maiden flight.......after I recovered.

Hello Shrike Club,

The new maiden flight(s) went very well! I was hoping to post some videos of it, however my camera man was having a hard time keeping up with it! The "guys" at the field estimated the speed to be somewhere between 120 to 150. The "bomb" drops worked, but not as expected. The bombs broke apart right after release. So you saw a big "white puff" from the flour. I will be trying some different ways of using rubber bands or something to hold the bombs together until they impact the ground. The engine is an Italian made Super Tigre 40, was running an APC 11x5 prop with 10% nitro. On my last flight we put on a Master Airscrew 9x6 and some 30% heli fuel in it. After two launches and landings to increase the mix we were happy with how it was unloading in flight. I have no doubt we increased the speed by at 25mph!

All I can say is "I feel the need, the need for speed!" This is quickly becoming my "speed demon" favorite... I've include a picture of the plane hanging in my trailer!

Enjoy,

Bill
