Default DLE 35 Mounting Question?

Have many years experieince mounting smaller glow engines but recently purchased the new DLE 35 (1st gasser) for my Giant Ugly Stik and need help with mounting question. I'll be using the stand-offs that came with the engine and my question is - the standoffs are threaded one both ends, one end to mount the engine and the other to? Do you drill the firewall and use washers/lock washers on the inside firewall or is something else required for mounting? Thanks for helping the gas newbie!

Depends on the plane, but yes, the you use bolts and lockwashers. Use the biggest surface washers that will fit inside the motor box from the back into the threaded stand off. USE LOCKTITE on all of the mounting bolts.

There is a mounting template in the instruction manual, and if you're lucky, center lines etched on the firewall. Cut it out or copy it and use it to mark your bolt holes, if you dont have the manual, you can download it and print off that page. Tape the template to the firewall to drill the holes

Thanks Andy, appreciate the reply! I figured that was the case but being this is my first gasser I thought I would ask. Checked my paperwork that came with the 35, no mounting template so I'll check the website.

The manual for the 30 is here
http://www.dleengines.com/dleg0031.html

Not sure if the template is the same or not, you might print one and see if the holes match up

Edit: here you go

Thanks! I haven't had my hands on one as of yet so I wasn't sure.

The Red Wing link has the 35 template, looks like he did it in CAD himself.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the info and links, makes it much easier to locate the bolt holes. I was really struggling to find nuts on hand to fit the bolts so I made a trip to the local hardware store and discovered they are metric. Now, I can get to it!

that would be a big load for any 30-35 cc i would think unless went with thin props. I do know someone make a 45RA but i cant remember the name and EVO used to make a 45 with magnesium case that was just a bit more in weight but could swing a 22x10 at around 7,000 if i remember correctly

DL826, why don't you start your own thread so we can ask questions directly to you rather than posting the same thing in many other people's post?

One other mounting question? Are the shorter stand-off bolts used to mount the engine to the stand-offs or to mount them to the firewall? Thanks

It would turn the 22 prop but I doubt very well.I like the 19x8 Xaor ,prop of choice.Depends on what type of flying you want to do.I am sure it would turn a 20x8 pretty well. Like the 35 better all the time.Put a bowman ring in it but the factory ring looked good and compression was good.
Bowman ring did add some RPM.Only have three flights on the Bowman ring but compression is even better then factory ring.

There's no real answer to the OP. Sure the holes can be located, but how do you hold the screws on the inside of the fuselage?

A good way that works well is to epoxy the screws into the firewall so that they jut out to the front. I normally use flatheads for this. For example for a 1/4" firewall thickness I add another set of blocks to the FW to build up the thickness to 1/2", drill and tap that, and then epoxy the screws into the holes from the inside coming out, to form studs. Simple and effective but it won't solve every installation, especially in a warbird with narrow, difficult to get to firewall. But for aerobats, it's a cinch. The amount of thread needed is about 1/4"- 3/8"; 1/2" is probably overkill but will work fine

I'm trying to picture this. (I've got a Great Planes Giant Super Sporster). What if I located the holes, put in blind nuts, glue in from the inside the bolts like studs? Then mounted the standoffs on the studs? It's just so odd from what I'm used to.

That's fine. Add epoxy or loctite to the studs and lock them down good. Ain't coming loose!
