Hi All.
Trust all the builds are going well and also the flying of the finished birds..........I have just finished weathering and sealing the fuzz on my build,so I thought I would post some photo's............decided to go for the "dirty and un-cleaned" look !!! Just the wings to rivet up,panel line and weather now.
Cheers.................Nick (UK).

Tim Cardin had a very nicely "bashed" H9 Jug at the 1/8 Air Force event here in Phoenix this past weekend. It is much easier to see the relatively accurate outline of the model when you get rid of the awful shiney covering and put a proper finish on the old girl, IMHO. I was impressed with the results of Mr. Cardin's efforts.

Hey guys...
I have an untouched Dynamic Balsa cockpit kit for this model that I'm not going to use. PM if you are interested... they are $90 new and I'll sell mine for $75 shipped.

Hi all,
Any one out there flying the P47 30cc with the DLE 35cc rear exhaust?
A major online retailer is selling the H9 P47 in combo with the DLE 35cc engine. With a prop rating of up to 20x10, one would think it has enough punch to do a nice job.
Also, at 4.1 HP, that engine should yield 3,075 watts of power. The 160 Electric is rated at 2700.
Thanks for your comments.

Hi Guys.
All finished now,c of g done...............put it at 5 1/2" from the leading edge ( what is everybody else using ? ),at this setting ( gear up,empty tank ),she is slightly nose heavy. On my build,I have had to add 4oz to the TAIL !!! That sure surprised me !!!
OS 55 strarted easily, but I am running it ( for the first 5 litres ) with a mix of 30:1,bias to a little more oil and on a rich setting for a couple of tank fulls. The on-board telemetry working well ( so far on the ground !! ) The cylinder head temp appears so far to be quite stable, rising a very small amount between cowl on and cowl off ( did that just to see if there would be a big difference in the cooling airflow).......I suspect that when she is flying to see that temp rise a bit, but still be stable.
The Biela 4blade appears to be ok on the OS,I have run it up to max rpm on the rich setting, looks to be pretty smooth........and getting some proper "oil-staines on the belly" at the moment !!!
This is a very quick video of "71" smoking out my back garden.........could do with a longer "taxi-way" though !!!
Just a couple of items to sort out, then she will be off to the strip for more run-ups to make sure and then the maiden........

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
So two questions for those out there willing to offer opinions, one is the most common, engine.
I see that there are a couple of 55's and 50's out there but I was thinking of the OS GT-33. Any ideas on that? I don't need vertical, any recs on the GT-33?
Second is retracts, has anyone put the WS retracts in this bird? Looking for some actual user reviews on these if anyone has them. Nice looking builds out there, thanks for your input.

Nick,
Your weathering sure looks great. Hard to believe the ship is covered in Ultracoat.
I was surprised to see that you had to add lead to the tail of your plane. If you have not already test flown you may want to consider removing that lead for the first flight. I have been involved with five of these and all have needed quite a bit of nose weight and were unpleasant when tail heavy.
If your flying ability is anywhere near as good as your modeling skill you will be fine either way!
Good Luck

Hi Louis.
I will be trying the maiden on the Biela 19 x 8 ( Mustang profile prop....the one that is on at the moment)......I do have a 18 x 10 4BL Biela ( Corsair profile prop ) to try if no joy with the other !!! I don't think that the 19 x 8 will be a problem. The pull from the OS with that prop is alot ( even at the moment with the engine running very rich and not topping out> The Biels props are or should be rated to 8000 RPM max,so I hope it will be ok ???
Cheers...............Nick (UK).

Hi Doug.
Many thanks for your reply........I think that I was most surprised at having to add TAIL weight of around 4oz !!! I know you and your flying buddies have flown these, are you using the 5 1/2" from the LE for the C of G...??
In my build,I added extra ply to inner surface of the wing in the wheel well and ajacent "bay"...............I did this because it looked like a very easy thing to poke your thumbs and fingers through the skin here when assembling the model !!!
I also have as much up front as I could, plus the Biela prop + hub etc weigh around 9oz + the cowling is a bit heavier with the "carbon strenghtening band" I put around the inside...........also the Robart Ali wheels are much heavier ( and fwd of the c of g at 5 1/2" ) than the std wheels..........
Let me know what your c of g position is ...?
Cheers..............Nick (UK).

Hi John.
OK,sounds good to me,I have it set at that at the moment..............and it is still slightly nose down ( I usually have my models set with a slight bias nose down at c of g ).Had to get the exhaust modified, just to give me a bit more "air-clearance" from the inside of the cowl as it was just touching !!! Should have that back in a week, then a couple more tanks through for setting up and then off into the air !!! mmmmmm
Thanks again.
Cheers Nick (UK).

Nick,
I think you'll be good with the 19x8. With the richer setting the lesser pitch will be better. You'll get more RPM, which is always good. Once you're the comfortable you can experiment with higher pitch props. Good luck with the maiden! To bad my trip to Paris this weekend is so short. Other wise I could have come watch the maiden!

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hey guys...
A quick question on flap installation...
On the video build that John does, it appears (to me, anyways) that he installs the flap servos with the output shafts oriented towards the trailing edge of the wing. The manual calls for the output shafts to be oriented towards the leading edge of the wing. Which way are all of you doing this? The control arms seem to be too long for proper installation if they are as the video (apparently) shows on my model and is making the flap installation difficult for me. The manual calls for the flaps to be installed with the control arm one spline biased towards the leading edge as well.
I just need to get the flaps set up properly and then balance and mine will be ready to maiden. I am going to attach whatever weight to the motor mount (mine is electric).
Thanks...
Curt

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Nick,
We tried the specified CG of 5 1/2 inches and found the planes flew very well. I was just surprised that you had to add tail weight. Your reinforcements sure are adding up! We found that this P-47 really grooves with added nose weight. Often times CG is a matter of personal preference and I happen to be in the nose-heavy camp. As noted before, you will love the characteristics of this ship.
Enjoy!

Hi Curt.
Have a look at this photo of my servo for the flaps.............hope this helps out ??? This shows the position / orientation so as to get your flaps set in the "up" position.
Cheers..............Nick (UK).

Hi Doug.
Thanks for your reply.............I too like to be in the "nose-heavy" camp............just that I had to add the weight in the tail so as not to be in "too nose heavy camp" !!!! just done a weight check on the cowl....it weighs in at 12oz !!!
Have you got the "Robart Ali-Wheels" yet...? My flying buddy, here in the UK has had them on order for nearly 3 months !!! ( he is building the T/F P-47)......guess these wheels are very popular in the US..?
Cheers................Nick (UK).

it looks like your servo output shafts are oriented towards the trailing edge, just like John's videos (but opposite what the manual calls for)... ?
I'll get this right, if it's the last thing I do!
