Snagged a NIB Sig Hog Bipe kit, still factory sealed for $72. at the bay. Only one other bidder.

That's quite unusual though.

Just saw a Top Flite Giant Corsair kit go for over $350 this weekend. Funny thing is, Tower lowered the price the same day to $300 - with club discount, $250! Someone paid $100+ more than they needed to...

Is there a business in buying cool kits from Tower and then listing them on E-Bay?!?!?

Thats kind kf sad for the guy that bought it but for sure buyer beware! I do enjoy this hobby but it has gone up so much in the last few years that i see allot of guys getting out of it. I sometimes wonder how much higher the hobby will go before I am forced out. I am doing ok as far as making a living but an illness could end this hobby overnight.@

Many of us like to build our models....Some of us, so much so, that the price isn't an issue if we can find a kit or plans for a kit that we really like.....Most ARF models are less expensive in the long run.....hardware and covering really adds up in a true build model. Building from scratch is even more expensive....
It's just like fishin'...you can use a cane pole and enjoy it or you can build your own fly rod for a lot more money and enjoy the build.
I do both, I build my planes and I also fly arf's......I don't worry about crashing the arf as much as I do my own build. Sorry, I may have gotten a bit off the topic..

I get it when an out of production kit like a Pica goes for an insane amount. In that case, there is a real limited supply, and it should go to whoever wants it the most. However, if the kit is in production, it seems like it ought to go for some discount below what I could get it from a reputable online supplier like Tower, or Balsa USA. It seems like they go for just about the exact same price most of the time. Why would I buy something on E-bay from what is only most likely a reputable seller, when I can buy for sure from a reputable seller elsewhere??

I am always looking for a great kit to build, and I now just look on craigslist(local) or rcu. Ebay is tough to watch as the price goes up-up and up.
We have a fellow buyer we all know on RCU that makes a killing on ebay and I think he's doing a great job making some cash! I myself have sold him a couple kits and wonder how much they really sold for. kudos to him but in the other sense its kits that we cant buy as RCU members, because they sell very fast and the good deals go straight to ebay! but, it is what it is.

winter is on its way to Minnesota so I better start buying a couple more to get through the cold temps comming.

Craig's List is a great place to find kits, and I've also had good luck with a couple of local hobby stores that occassionally will sell things on consignment. Over the course of the last two years, I have bought these:

TF Gold Edition .60 size P-47 kit in perfect, complete condition with cockpit kit, dummy engine kit and bubble canopy kit for $80. Local hobby store.
TF Gold Edition .60 size P-51 kit in perfect, complete condition for $50. Craig's List.
TF Gold Edition. 60 size F4U Corsair kit in perfect, complete condition with mechanical retracts, wheels and 3 rolls covering for $100. Craig's List.
TF Gold Edition .60 size P-40 kit in perfect, complete condition for $75. Local hobby store.
TF Gold Edition .60 size Spitfire kit in perfect, complete condition. Traded it for a nearly new 4 cycle engine that I had bought for $120. RCU
Great Planes Super Skybolt .60 size kit in perfect, complete condition for $60. Craig's List.
Heritage RC Hellcat kit in perfect, complete condition for $60. Craig's List.

So persistence, good fortune, and not being in a rush to get a particular kit is the key. I'll bet you can tell I really like the TF Gold Edition kits.

What areas on CL do you find kits? I've looked in 'toys' for quite a while, both local and in Detroit, without much luck.

To find R/C stuff on CL, I've never looked in any particular category. Rather, I do a search on 'airplane', 'airplanes, 'planes' and 'plane'. Often, the kits are mixed in with other R/C airplane stuff for sale. Sometimes an estate sale or a modeler getting out of the hobby. I spotted the TF P-51 kit in the photo that the seller had posted. His listing stated some other items for sale, but he was selling all of his stuff and I happened to notice the kit. Since kits are not in demand, I've also had good luck by waiting it out. In other words, I don't respond when the listing first appears. I keep watching the posting. Turns out, in almost every case, no one has contacted the buyer. So 2-3 weeks later when I do make contact, the seller is very anxious to sell at any price and often has already lowered the price in their ad.

www.gravesrc.com has a lot of kits priced well, and some others that aren't. Shipping is actual cost. I picked up a new SIG Kavalier for $90 shipped. $123 for a SIG Astro Hog. I could have waited for a listing from private party, but knowing the kit is complete and untouched was worth the extra $20 to me. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJ576&P=7 With a coupon code they have going on, this is $119 to your door. Again $19 more assures me it's complete and well packaged for transit, unlike a lot of lazy inexperienced E bayers.

I find E bay being too high most of the time. Another RC forum online that is dedicated mostly to EP, have kits there, if you babysit the forum, you can get them for a song in most cases, as well as the glow engines.

and I was thinking about letting a World Model Midget Mustang go for $75.00 plus s&h.  I won this as a door prize at a flyin, this plane is not my type of flying.

Derek announced on RCU a couple of years back that he would be working in Hong Kong unitl 2013. I guess he's staying out a little longer and never did get a price for the business. I sold a F-18 kit last January because I didn't think I would get to it soon.

I have spent just under $600 for a 60 size kit before, and didn't have a problem doing so. I justify it by the amout of time I will enjoy working on it. If you think of it that way, it kinda takes the initial sting out of it.
A few years ago I made a budget to see where I was spending my money. I spent a good deal on Saturday nights going out with friends. So I began to lock myself in our shop on Saturday and started building kits. I saved a Lot of money and I still enjoyed my friends the other days of the week.

If you really look at it overall. Its a hobby that we enjoy. It puts smiles on our faces and building a plane from a box of wood and plans makes us proud of our abilities... Can you really put a price tag on that?
Also, its alot cheaper than therapy
