I guess it depends whether you've been naughty or nice.

rc planes arent toys. nor are they toys in the eyes of the ama, faa and a safety minded pilot. most instruction manuals included with planes, first page or two they always write " this is not a toy" . i know pilots and innocent bystanders who have been killed or injured from flying rc airplanes!
"toys" is simply a figure of speach or reference and not to be taken seriously. in the reality of life at the end of the day, I know the jets I fly arent toys as I exercise extreme caution when flying them. as far as someone striking your nerve by calling your planes "toys", it simply shows lack of intelligence but not always accompanied with ignorance. simply showing them a flight demo or showing the working inards, opens up their eyes quickly.

most of us are advanced aero hobbyists who share our knowledge and fundementals for the growth and development of our great hobby.

cheers and happy flying gents

I hear you, stoneenforcer, good points. Model airplanes are not toys, they are the means to a sport. I like to think of myself as a sport flyer.

Well, some people who have no idea of the hobby of flying r/c airplanes think of them as toys.. but man, I tell you My wife and friends always says "Are you going to go fly your toy planes today?" and for some reason that Irks me. Even my co-workers say the same thing and chuckle and then I explain to them that these "toys" fly at 60-80mph and yeild 50cc gasoline engine and cost anywhere from $200-$1300.00 to build or assemble and have the ability to cut & chop fingers off or worse. Then they act like I'm a big kid..And I might be a big kid deep down inside and I enjoiy it! Am I the only one who has to correct their friends, family and coworkers on the hobby and go on light defense? Now I just laugh and tell them to come to my house and see the planes and when they do they are amazed and say "WOW I though they were like small "toys" lol...oh well they dont know any better!
Don't let it irk you.. who cares what they think..

Laugh and chuckle with them and say.. Yeah, I love my toys..

Honestly, no point trying to explain it to them..

I fly corporate jets and the owners often call their $50 million dollar jets "Their Toys"

Whatever your hobby someone will try to knock you down..

I was a Police Officer in my earlier years and while at the Police Academy I used to set up N-scale model trains on my desk in my dorm room..You should have seen the flack Icopped over that..Lucky I have thick skin and don't really give a "s**t" what others say..

Just remember you can't soar like an eagle if you are surrounded by turkeys...

Its a great hobby, enjoy it.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a big kid!.

combat pigg well if the pitts was being used to make money then ok its functional but ours just cost us money so i considered it a toy and will consider our next acro machine the same unless i start doing airshows one day which is unlikely.

my point is who gives a rip what others call it a toy or not. If your offended by it being called a toy you need to get on facebook and tell everyone how you "feel"
so is a doll house a toy if its for a little girl then when she grows up its a scale representation of a wonderful life? give me a break get over it

Don't get hung up on what others say or think. If you enjoy the hobby that really is the important thing.

I find it amazing this thread is still going. I have never referred to them as anything other than my airplanes. Who care's? REALLY!  Who care's!

No ,NO log book of sorties nor do I tow them around behind me tethered to a string making vroom vroom noises either.

Now theres one point I totally agree with !!

ORIGINAL: combatpigg

I think it's time for either Dr Phil or Oprah to settle this.
I'm sure both of them would see people who have ''issues'' here............
Do you keep a log book of all your ''sorties''..?

Well done, Sir...... you've already anticipated my next question. That's the fundamental difference that exists between us, because I have been known to make high pitched, whistling turbine sounds.

In my recently cleared 2 acre sand box I sometimes make real nasty sounds of pain or frustration.
The ground is probably 50% rock. Lots of iron pyrite.
The stump pile was about 80 feet long by 20 feet wide and as tall as the excavator could make it.
All good fun and yes, the little tractor is both a tool and a toy.

About 150 to 200 yards of fill. Not bad for a toy.

The antique tractor, farm implement and antique generator restorers have their own little hobby culture too. I wonder if the "toy issue" comes up with them..?
The generators are fascinating, they only fire when rpm controlled swing weights retract enough to make ignition contacts close, or if the machine is under load.
