So, did a couple of modifications to my plane:
I reinforced my LG plate which had the grain going the wrong way (horizontally across the fuse instead of vertically along the fuse given the shearing stresses the LG apply to the plate) with a second plate of 1/8" lite ply with the grain going the other way epoxied to the bottom and the blind nuts moved to it's bottom instead of the bottom of the original plate, which necessitated longer LG mounting screws).
I used gator incidence adjusters in the front instead of the fiddly aluminium plates, which necessitated removing the carbon fiber tubes used as anti rotation pins on the front of the wings to be replaced by some balsa blocks drilled out to receive the gator phenolics, those balsa blocks bridge the first two ribs of the wings the same way the carbon fiber tube did, and the blocks are epoxied in.
I use secraft wing bolts with the bolt loctited into the wing and the nut spins on quickly on the interior of the plane when I mount the wings. A little heavier, but much easier to get the wings bolted on given the constrained finger space in the fuse where the wing bolts go in.
As far as equipment goes, I am running a powersafe receiver with two 450mAh 2S lipos and HV servos all around (JR 3711 for E + A, JR 8911 for R) so no reg needed. OS 1100HV ESC and Hacker Q60 motor, APC 20.5x14 prop is the heaviest prop I use and I weighed with that prop in place. Tru-turn 3" turbo-cool spinner. I'm also using a TM1000 telemetry module just for RX and main system battery voltage. Deans connectors all around except the telemetry voltage tap which is a JST connector. I have a Sharp RC arming plug in place.
Fuse weight with RX batteries in place: 2903g
Wing weight: 401g and 420g, respectively
Wing tube: 70g
Zippy Compact 10s 5000 packs: 1116-1169g depending on the battery.
Total AUW: 4910 - 4963g

Oh! and I used sugru (cool rubber/plastic adhesive sold by maker faire guys and available from ProgressiveRC) to secure the LG axle into the slot on the wheel pants and a nylock nut in place to receive the m2.5 screw that holds the pant to the LG legs. I also swapped out the wheels for 2.75" aluminum wheels with better foam. That added a small amount of weight in exchange for pretty much bullet proof LG and about 1/4" additional ground clearance for my prop with some of the smoothest rolling LG I've ever seen/felt.

Thanks Peter. Seeing all of the weights gives me a much better picture of where I can attack the weight.

It appears that I am in the ball park with most of the difference being in the larger capacity batteries. I think tightening up the cabling a bit here and there and reducing the receiver battery should shave of about 100g. If I decide to venture into the Sportsman class I will upgrade to JR servos and lighten the battery weight to the minimum required to complete the sequence and that should ensure I am below 5kg. I'll read through the posts again to see where I might be able to shave a few more grams here and there.

Yeah, gens ace batteries are awesome for the C rating, etc. but we don't need high C ratings, we need light weight and Gens Ace are HEAVY. The PowerUnlimited packs from F3AUnlimited and the Zippy Compact batteries are hard to beat for their light weight and 20-25C rating at a reasonable cost. Thunder power also looks great, but I hate their balance taps and huge price.

By the way, I highly recommend getting into competition here in D7, and I suspect the same is true in all the districts, the folks who compete are just a great bunch of people (some interesting personalities for sure!), very helpful, very supportive of folks new to pattern and you'll get lots of great advice from the judges not to mention the opportunity to meet someone who could become a coach for you which can make a quantum difference in your flying.
Regardless, practicing for competition will make you a better pilot all around, no matter what you are flying!

I also had a hard time with the stab adjusters. They are made cheaply and will strip out very easy. One of mine stripped just as it became flush with the top of the stab, I contacted extreme trying to find a suitable replacement but they wasn't much help. I ended up removing a section of the sheeting on the stab and removing the stab adjuster and locking it down at 0 degrees with a 1/4" wheel collar and the plywood wing adjuster they came with the kit. I set the stab at 0, slid the plywood adjuster over the rod, installed the wheel collar and double checked the incidence until I was happy and locked it down and CA glued the plywood. Then I replaced the sheeting and patched the ultracoat. I think the wheel collar is actually stronger than the adjuster. I haven't heard of anyone setting the stabs at anything other than 0 degrees, so locking it down shouldn't be a problem.

The block is aluminum and it looks like the factory used a soldering iron in the adjustment holes, melting the plastic covering into the threaded holes. Trying to get set-screws installed without cleaning the threadsfirst will ruin your day
There is no need to cut the balsa sheeting to access the ally block. You should be able to access it from the existing relief hole on the stab root rib. It doesn't take a whole lot of effort to knock the block off and remount it.

If you can carve the carbon gear some andchange the heavy pants in favor of lighter pants you should shave around2 ozs from the plane. Or ditch the pants entirely and shave another ounce. Also change the steel axles to aluminum 8-32 bolts and shave another 1/2 ounce or so. A small box of 25 bolts will set you back around 8$ and you will have enough supply to last a few planes

Hi Peter,
Do you have a template of the main undercarriage and bolt hole configuration and ply plate. I have had some problems with the ply delaminating due to lack of glue on one side ofthe ply laminate of the undercarriage plateand grain problems as you mention. I am having to remove the plate by breaking it up into small pieces. Without destroying to much of the front. I have to laminate thin ply sheets to get the mount back in. OR has anyone had any experience in getting the plate back in?

PS this was my second repair 1st was due to th original plate ply not been laminated well, no glue on 1/2 that cracked, landing wasnt hard but field ground was wet. I laminated over plate 1 st repair, lasted about 20 flights so I need to put a new plate in with ply laminets in right direction.

Can you use direct A123 batteries for those futaba servos or the bls versions?

I have several sets of the 5S and 5S, and several sets of a 6S and 4S. When it is time to have new batteries, I will probably use the 45C's if I make weight.
