A DLE 20 will turn the MA 16x8x3 and the 15x7x3 quite well. Not the most efficient props, but they will do the job.

I spun up a 15x7x3 MA on my DLE, never flew it, but it did spin up and felt pretty strong. Knocked the RPM down quite a bit though.  Half tempted to use it on my Mustang, and set the Stang up as an A model.  Cooling would be the trick.

That prop may work fine on the Mustang up in the air as the prop will unload well as the speed builds up?

You will just have try it and see?

I fly my H-9 60 size P-47 with a DLE-20 and a MA 15X7X3. Great combo. High speed passes are good but I am afraid to push the airframe too much as I assembled it with CA hinges.

I don't know what the 8x3 pitch is all about and it's still 16". I have raised the engine 1" to gain some ground clearence ( it's being bashed ) and wing is also raised 3/4" for performance reasons. I need to figure the gear length so prop length is important at this time.

Did I mention it's a Tiger 60.

I have a question about DLE20, I've run my DLE20 two times on the ground and I ran probably one tank through it. It's installed on my Yak 54 120 big round cowl. I haven't done maiden on it, Sunday is the plan so far, it may change who knows, but the question is. Do I have to fly it without a cowl or with the cowl, weather is nice in 60's may drop or shoot up don't know.

Thanks

Mody

Fly it with the cowling on. As long as the exit hole for the cooling air is adequate, you'll be fine. Once the cowling is on, run it on the ground to double-check the tune. Sometimes the tune will change with the cowling on vs. off.

I would maiden, fly 2-3 flights without the cowl.... why ?:

Shows how the engine is behaving without the restricted airflow.
After putting on the cowl the above is the benchmark for engine behavior
Lose bolts and condition of muffler, firewall due to vibration are visible better.
Easier to access the needles for fine tuning

I generally run with mine on, but Sandy has some really valid points for going without. Your call....

Test flights usually set the trims, verify the balance, etc. Without the cowl, will it adversely affect the outcome? I have a few planes that the cowl is heavy enough to affect the balance point.

Generally the manf. suggested CG is really conservative - safe. I wouldn't be too shy of flying without the cowl from that perspective? You could always check it without. If it's close, I'd run it....

If this were just my second or third plane though, I might be tempted to have somebody more familiar with it test fly it for me to at least get the maiden out of the way?

Everybody has valid points in accordance with their perspective and experiences. I truly appreciate that. I'm gonna fly the plane, since due to a lots of things I could not have a maiden on it. The club I wanna join, I'd fly there as a guest so far this Sunday is confirmed don't if it's changed yet. Needles setting are OK, but not perfect or excellent as to speak, but I'm gonna fly it without the cowl which barely has any weight on it. Once I'm comfortable with the plane, all trimmed out, and pretty much crank up and fly, I'd put the cowl on since it has DLE20 on-board

Open to more inputs

Thanks

Mody

Guys

One more opinion, suggestion, advice, input

I have asked this question in my other thread but I'm asking it here. What do y'all say about the Combo of DLE20 with Seagull Model's Sea Fury.

Thanks

No weight specs given there. Maybe go to the Seagull site directly for more. There is a review there if you click on Reviews where they guy put a FG30 Saito (Ithink) on it.

My take, it's on the heavy side (typical Seagull), but should work OK as long as you aren't expecting it to fly like a trainer? I agree with the skill level they've assigned to it....

Thanks Al, those specs look good actually for 20cc engine. 20cc's is 1.22 cubic inches, so is right exactly at the top end of engine size requirements. Sure, it's heavier than a 3D plane but would give realistic wing loading for a war bird I think. Go for it and enjoy.

In the case of a DLE20 with a 16 X 8 prop, what is the end result of cutting 1/2" off ends of prop ?.

A few hundred rpm at most.

According to my math, that's going to take it down to a 15" prop, likely putting your rpms into the danger zone?

Are you considering doing this looking for ground clearance? No interest in a 3 bladed prop?

Clearance yes, while I did'nt want to go with a 3 but may have to in order to keep the engine loaded to the right RPM. I have seen where some guy's have cut the tips off there props, thought I'd ask.

Have you considered 3 1/2" wheels? Real light, like the Dave Brown type.

On some planes I put a 1/4" wooden plate between the landing gear and the fuse, for that much added clearance.
