Hi Guys

I'm at the stage of fixing the Carbon Bypass to the tailpipe

CARF manual says " permanently fix the steel tailpipe to the carbon bypass using the 3 x 2.9mm sheet metal screws".

I didnt think that was a great idea so , I was considering either 3 x 3mm nuts & bolt or pop rivets.

Has anyone used pop rivets for similar apllication ?
I wasnt too sure since the part that flares and tightens as the stem is pulled out is aluminium.
I was a little concerned about aluminium and extreme heat , but if the carbon survives the hot exhaust I figure the aluminium should be fine.
Would appreciate some input if any regarding this.

Hi Nandan,

Pop rivets would be fine. I have used this method a few times myself with no problems. The screws method is also fine though, I normally cut the ends off the screws after putting them in.

Has anybody used the Plywood jig for CG.
What's the sweet spot for the CG ?

Hi , I used the top hole above the four holes, the plane flew sweet and landed nice, I have since then also put a pilot in which is only a set of overalls filled with bubble wrap and a head, bone dome. Still flies super, the landings are short and predictable. I have over 30 flights on it now.
Just my 2 pennies worth.

How much wing flex is there with the wings held/flexed from say mid span? Does the fuselage joint line open at all? Its why I won't use the MPX connectors, they constantly are worked on the pins as the wing moves, same with air connection, do you have any flexibility built in?

I think you will find Nandon's method of fixings is absolutely fine.

The connections on the fus side are hard mounted as in the pic and it looks to me like the connections from the wing are not going to be hard mounted to the wing but left loose to plug into the fus outputs, so there will be no stresses on the connections at all. Neat and tidy solution and leaves one hand free to do other things with !

Yes you are right, thats exactly what Nandan has done. I have used the plug in connectors on both ends on my TH Viper but only for AIR connections. Working flawless so far, the flex should be minimum at the root.

Thanx for the inputs.

Mark How much elevator compensation do you have with flaps ? Up or down ? There's no mention of it in the manual.

Dave both, the air connections and the MPX connectors are free floating in the wing and fixed at the fuse.
I've used the Robart 1/4 turn lock bulkhead fittings for air in the fuse.
I havent checked for flex in the wings like you suggest but I've heard similar reports about the wing flex , although it looks fairly solid with quite some carbon lay up at the root.

BTW If you guys look carefully at the pics you'll see the color mismatch between the inlets and the rest of the fuse.
Similar mismatch on ventral fins ,gears doors essentially all components which seem to have been finished later.
That's my only peeve - rest of it is just amazing !

Wing flexing at the root was only a problem if you had fixed the wing connections.

Should not need any (or tiny) elevator with flap looking at Stefan and Andreas's Vipers...

Nandon, After some 30 odd flights, I have found i need no elevator trim with flap, yes if plane is to fast the nose will pitch up but at landing speed it is perfect, how ever the plane dave has been flying may have the c of g different so the centre of pressure will be different so it could pitch either way, depending on nose or tail heavy.
Mine with c of g on centre hole of jig is fine lands beautifully. And so slow. You are going to love it I do......

Nands, one thing that surprised me on your viper is the seam line on top of the fuse is not visible, where as on Akshays dream scheme you see the ugly seam line all along the fuse.

One more Mod.
CARF's fiberglass tailpipe end fitting was really crappy and ugly , i tried dressing it first with self adhesive aluminium tape , it still didnt look right
Finally replaced it with a steel nozzle made from thin gauge steel sheet.
It looks a whole lot better now

A lot of models now have the seem filled and painted after joining, some schemes its not possible...
The colour mismatch is because the other parts have paint layered "under" the bronze making it darker and the separate parts are just painted the colour.
I'll ask the question again

Guys. Just to confirm what Dave says - I was very happy with the first 2 flights of my Viper. It has been somewhat of a slog to finish the model due to initially fitting electric gear. I had 2 separate failures before even flying the model so have reverted to the CARF recommended Airtech system. This was a faff for Dave at M&R to sort out so many thanks for doing that Dave. There were other issues to sort with CARF and again Dave came up trumps for me and all is well. I also received some useful advice from Mark Hinton so thanks for that Mark.

I have the C of G at 186mm from the LE and this is about 6mm forward of the front of the wing tube - this seems about right. It was further forward than this for the first flight but it was clearly nose heavy. Control throws are as recommended by CARF although I have reduced the expo as I prefer a livelier response than most. Landing was easy and the model sits at a very nice angle of attack for touchdown as you can see in the photos.
