hi folks,
recieved my triple 7 a couple of daxs ago and would l,ike to du the break in on a test stand at home in the carport. the problem is, winter is coming and it is only around 0 to 5 Celsius outside. Do you see any problems with that? i am rather referring to problems in the break in process than to problems starting it. the engine will be at room temp when I come out of the shop and immediatly started.

Make sure all seven cylinders are running. the engine will need to be very rich in the cold high density air. The cold will no hurt the engine. Three hours running in the cold will get it in good running order. Familiarization with the engine is what is also important. -Tom

Don't forget to oil up the rockers before you start each time at the beginning of the days flying. I use a Sonic Tronics auto glow system..........brilliant.

its my third radial. I have just never run in an engine at these temperatures and am quite reluctant to wait till spring for the first run.

can anybody tell me if the 999 radial engine is too big or to much for the 1/4 scale Flair Stearman? I see someone is using a Robart 780 radial engine that is 10 H.P. on you tube it looks like the right size with no problems and just wondering if the evo 999 would work? I have a chance to get one (Flair Stearman) 89 in. wing it claims to be 19-22 lbs although the owner said around 28 to 30 lbs. beautifully built but it has a G-62 gas engine, never been flown, I told the guy I don`t want the engine, the problem is you can not get the fuel tank out to replace it with a tank for the evo, the only exit is through the cock pit and it does not look big enough to put a tank through it? any suggestions? or comments would be appreciated thanks..........Steve

Say Tom, what size tank would you recommend for a UMS 990 in a Robinhood 99? I usually plan on an 8-10 minute flight, and using the Saito standard 1.0 oz of fuel per cubic inch of engine displacement for a minute of flight, I'm computing something like a 50-60 oz tank. That's at full throttle; I figure it's a good as a design number and the reserve comes from flying at less than full bore.
Will that big a tank fit in the Robinhood99?

well I just purchased this Flair Stearman 89in. wing the guy I got it from said with his G-62 engine it was at 30 lbs., now I plan on either putting in the Evo 999 or considering buying a 777 for it but not sure it will be enough engine? what say you? advice appreciated, very nice airplane just want it to look real..........Steve

I would use a 20 to 24 oz tank. I think mine is a 20. The saito at mid throttle gobbles fuel due to a not so good carb design. Pictures!!!! A perfect combo but put the batteries at the back of the fuselage! -Tom

Was also giving serious thought to using an OS carb on the 325, per your recommendation many moons ago. The Saito slobbers pretty bad in mid-range.

right... even with Kelvins good instructions, getting that Keleo on the 7-77 will give you at least three fits, 4-5 nervous breakdowns and some silent sobs in the corner of your workshop...
My work protocol...
1. loosen 49 screws
2. try fitting the exhaust
3. at some stage the cam rods fall out.
4. try fitting the exhaust
5. then the cam followers fall out
6. try fitting the exhaust
7. first exhaust manifold fits with a cunning turn and screw movement of cylinder head(s) and exhaust
8. replace cam rods and cam followers (stupid move at this stage)
9. while fastening the first screws and turning the cylinders to accept the other manifolds the intake manifolds, cam followers and cam rods fall out.
10. while putting back the intake manifolds the exhaust ring jumps back out.
11. go to 2.
and then, after many many tries...
12. fasten 49 screws
A very nice way to spend the evening

Well I followed Kelvins instructions and bolted it to the table. on turning the heads the cams all came out. I unbolted the engine to try to get the ring to fit a bit better and then the cam followers and intake stacks came out.
To be honest, I think many people will be more sophisticated in fitting this thing than I am. Just wanted to share the experiences of a ham fisted oaf

what size prop are you swinging? I am considering a 777 for my 1/4 scale Flair Stearman, but it seems to be quite heavy the guy I got it from says 30lbs. with the G-62 on it I got the plane with out the engine but still seems heavy I was thinking about putting my 999 engine in it but would like to keep it in my Corsair, just not sure if the 777 would be enough power.

My ESM 85 in. Corsair weighs 31 lbs. The 777 flys it no problem. Even takes off on six cylinders which I dont recommend and will only do once.: Pete

Hi Pete, glad to see your posting on the Seagull AT-6 and the 35 cc radial. I had been considering the the same set-up but was apprehensive. I have the AT-6 but still debating the FG-30 or the 35 cc radial. A couple of questions:
1. With the 35 cc radial what does your AT-6 weigh?
2. Do you use on board glow (added weight)?
3. Any mods to the airframe itself to accomodate the radial other than removing the servo boxes forward of the firewall.
4. Does anyone sale the fuel pre-mixed to the nitro and oil percentages recommended by Evolution?

started my 7-77 for the first time yesterday. Thanks to all the good tips in this thread it really started well. I primed it about ten turns, connected the glow to a big lead battery and after about five flicks it was alive.
I really like the sound with the keleo. Compared to the sound of other youtube vids with the straight pipes it sounds a bit more grown up.
Cant wait to run it outdoors and break it in properly.
nota bene: theres a run protocol that comes with the engine stating it has done 30 minutes of running at the factory. checking the clearance, the intake valves never really closed on factory setting and I do not think the engine would have run that way. Oh well...
