Fella's, i am considering a O.S. 1.08 for the TF Spitfire. It is way too much power but it looks like a decent fit. Jtec is helping with a muffler. We shall see how this works out.

Thanks, Sonny. My Spitfire and it's "crew" usually draws attention at fly-ins. Sometimes the jeep gets more attention than the plane!

OS 1.08 is a very good engine.
My philosophy = if you have the engine already and the weight and fit is ok for the
plane, then use it.
Too powerfull? Hm...You can always fly at 3/4 throttle
Not enough power? You can't increase 1/4 more throttle
I think it will work very well in your Spitfire.

My son picked up a book about Canadians and Spitfires at the library for me. That has some
real nice drawings of Spits in it. One is a MKII with panel lines and rivet placement.
I will be using it as a guide and update when it's done.

Here are the pictures wheel well liners that T was talking about in my last post.
You can see the good fit when the gears are up!! I also made covers to go over the gear box. That makes a clean look to the wings and cut down on drag!! I may not go with the wheels paints because I can not get them flush with the wings!![>:] Looking to put an on-board glow system in the bird, but I have to find a place to put it!! For one thing, the fuse is tight on space. I move the main battery pack to the top of the engine box. I will post pictures to show how tight the fuse is. Must be use to all the space that ARF has in the fuse!!!

The rivet idea looks great. I may have to try that one day too. I wonder if it would work if a screw was put in the end of a soldering iron.

I see you know your Cessna aircraft. A friend had that plane and I kept calling it a 336 also.

Thanks for the tip on the wheel wells; RPRC and I were discussing the wheel well situation a couple of days ago.

Your build looks like it is coming along fine too. I will post more on ours later.

Thanks fella's. That left stick is for the throttle too.
As a follow up, Jtec has a muffler that will work. I have one on order and will follow up with how it fits inside the cowl when we get in to the build. C.O. and i are both wanting to get started but being patient at the same time to finish our current projects.

not really. Soldering irons get too hot and will very likely burn through the monokote/covering film.
Only solution to this would be a variostat hooked up to the soldering iron to keep the temp down.

This is what it looks like.
Rather expensive, but I work for a bumper recycling company and we had some of these.
Never use them, as we use hot air to fuse the plastic. Way better hold and faster.

Hi Brothers;
Here are some more pictures of my Top Flite Spitfire build. As I post before, inside the fuse is tight for space. I move the tray that hold the air vale and its servo to just below air tank. The plans call for this tray to go over the main tray. I did not like that set-up. Before anyone say, I put the wings hold down blind nuts on the top block, they are on both side of the block. Don't ask why, I just did!!! Also you can see I have start to work on the cockpit. The radio mast that you see on top of the fuse will be use to run the receiver wire back to the tail!! I know its old school, but, I still love my 72 meg system!!! On the cowl, the two holes are h/s needle, and the fuel dot. The main build is done, but the fun is just starting. Sanding, filling, glass, and paint!!! I have been looking at the Yellow Aircraft Spitfire kit and to tell you the truth, I love it!!!! Anyone want to drop this under my tree??? lol

I just took possesion of a CMP Spitfire 50. Frankly Im impressed with the fit and finish. My plan is to drop in a Saito 65 which should supply enough low end tork to pull it around in a scale like manor. I would greatly appreciate hearing from others that own this entry level spitty.

There is a big thread on it on the other forum under Glow to Electric Conversions. Consensus is that it flies nicely but builds heavy and lands super-hot. I'd recommend bashing flaps in there. I built the CMP Mustang 50 "53 and had a good outcome, but mine was heavily modded with flaps, more wingspan (built a new center section, and lots of work to reinforce the fuse, which is of uneven build quality. I did a 4S power setup in a bid to keep weight down, and making CG was a real challenge. Once I got it sorted out, it flew well but again was a lead sled. The retract rails will likely need a good bit of work to make them durable.

I just got off the phone with Paul at Monforton Press about the Spitfire drawings.

His equipment is rather old so the drawings only have indeed been discontinued. They we printed at the same size and scale.

However, all the drawings are in the spitfire book. It is just that they are not all at the same size.
But you could take the book drawings and make the same size. He said his book is very much focused on R/C modelers for all the details.

I asked about shipping to Australia, about $ 40 Canadian for surface and closer to $100 for air. That is just shipping costs.

To order the website has details an he now uses only Paypal. No credit cards.

Looking at the rivets idea you did on the mustang sample, I have two concerns.

1. Appears they are rather large for that size of airplane. I'm sure will figure that part out. The spit had various sizes throughout its fuse and wing.

2. Will the rivets still be visible during hot summer days when the covering has a chance to kinda shrink back?
I had done something similar but not as deep as I used cold screwdriver heads for Phillips and flat screw heads. After a while, the just sorta disappeared. Hopefully you method is more permanent.

From volume 35, page 35. Under the chapter on Mark V spits:

"Further problems arose with distortion of the upper mainplane skin above the wheel wells. The answer was to fit external strengthening stringers, the work being carried out at a local level for minor distortions whilst transfer to a depot was required for more major repairs. Over stressing for various reasons was also causing some concern.
In some cases, maneuvering caused failure of the starboard tail plane whilst firing of the cannon was causing problems with the oxygen system, which either failed completely or became uncontrollable. In either case it caused problems for the pilot who either became incapacitated or was forced to reduce altitude rapidly"

Hi Firebee,

thank you for your input.
They do look a bit large. 2.50-3mm diameter at 1/7 scale = 17.5-21mm original diameter. I am wondering what the original diameter on the aircraft was.
I have a few smaller screw heads to try yet, but I would like them to be visable. It's trial and error on my donor fuselage before I go all gung ho.
I have not seen anybody do this on monokote/film yet.

I'll take the old fuslage to work and try a heat lamp in our heat room on it for a while. Let's see what the heat will do to the covering.
I am using heat to press the screw head in, albeit very lightly, so it should not contract too much I hope.
When this is all done the plane will be sprayed with topflite's matt clear finish. That might help as well to keep the shape.

I really appreciate your thoughts on this, as it gives me some ideas to ponder.
