Hi Tom, sorry if my post came across this way, I didn't mean it like that! I am in the same boat, just wishing I had money to get a better built radial. Just seeing you ordering parts from all over the world seems pricey... maybe it's not as bad as I've imagined and I can see you're enjoying your re-build and that's the important part. Enjoy! V.

Ordering the bearings from Germany, actually cost less than ordering from Boca Bearing Co. here in the USA. And Boca's lowest cost bearings do not have brand names, so they most likely are Chinese imports. Nothing wrong with Chinese bearings, but I was able to get mostly name brand European made bearings for less money.
The ASP spare parts unfortunately can only be sourced from Just Engines, as far as I have been able to find. And the GBP vs USD is bad right now so those parts were indeed expensive.

Gentlemen,
back to the 400. I, the man at work , am nearing completion on the 400 that comes "from a land downunder". I wonder how many 80's fans get that one
I was quite Ill for a week so no progress but this week I managed to get some hours into it. Now due to the fact that I only have a lightweight 250W buff I decided not to go for Toms High Gloss "Roaring Mirror" finish but instead go for the "I am not an aluminium "play play" motor, I am a bad***** steel engine" look.
First I sanded the worst scratches with 800 and 1000 grain wet paper. After that I went with a sisal buff and brown compound for the rough part. Last step is the cloth buff with blue compound. I must say this whole polishing business makes a hell of a mess in the workshop
I am quite satisfied with the outcome. Hope to have the engine cough its first strokes on the weekend

Guys,
thanks for the kind words. Like the look as well.
did a quick try with the 400 because it should go on display at a local exibition between christmas and the 6th of Jan. but it is blowing from all cylinder heads. Compression is very bad. Small setback. I have to change the cylinder liners too. They are so corroded at the top that the cylinder heads can't keep them sealed.
I have ordered new ones from HK, they are 8 bucks a piece so not that bad. Will be 2013 before the engine runs. Exhibition will be static then.
Apart from that not very motivated for RC. The news we are getting from connecticut is simply devastating and thoughts about it keep going round in my head. I have two kids about that age and I cannot even begin to imagine what those parents are going through after those senseless and brutal events.
My heart and prayers go out to them.
Sorry for the OT.
Philipp

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
My cousin has children of 3 and 6 so rev i am right there with you. I have many friends in america, half of which are of high school age and i do often worry.
I know people will go on about it being unconstitutional (which is rubbish) but honestly, they were children at school. And what of the people just watching a movie? or the police officers attending any number of issues. I think America needs to have a long hard look in the mirror and the govt need to act to protect their population.
Irrespective of the long term changes, this is another tragic event that should not have been allowed to happen.

Sounds great Rev, and it looks clean as well on the low oil fuel? as much as you can tell from a slow run anyway.
Sadly i did not have the weather for any radial action, its too cold and its just a pain to start it. So, some V twin laser action did the trick, but alas no video.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Hello Guys,
I Follow this Forum since July and im happy to see so many Enthusiasts in radial engines. Im also a proud owner of an ASP 400 from hobbyking. so far so good. I struggled a little bit to get all cylinders running until I followed some suggestions from Tom.
Have any of yu ever heard from this machinist guy named George Luhrs ?. He built the smallest 5 cylinder radial engine for a contest sponsored by sherline tools in 2001. Unfortunately i havent seen a video of the engine running and I dont even know if the guy is still aive but is quite an achievement what he made. his webpage is minimodelengines].com (remove the square bracket to go to the webpage).
Regards,
Israel

Hello Israel, welcome to the forum.
Being a model engineering enthusiast myself, I am quite familiar with George Luhrs' micro engines, he has built many different types. He is not alone, it seems many model engineers try to make things as small as humanly possible. I suppose that is the challenge they seek to conquer.
If you haven't yet, you should peruse the Model Craftmanship Museum website, by the owner of Sherline.

Hi guys...If you have too much rain and snow, please send it over here.....Constant over 34 deg with about 7-85% humidity. I sure do miss that radial rumble at idle..The twin 2 stoke is just loud.. Still cant land the bird without doing some UC damage.
