RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Glad to be of help,
I also think they should come out with pilots for other nations also, I'm working on a modern day pilot for a big scale Mig 29 and it has been hard to duplicate.
this is what I have come up with so far.
keep up the good work on your LA-7

Did you guys just line up the paint markings (half white and half blue) and drill away on the horizontal stab alignment? It seems really close but almost appears like it would make the plane nose dive, hard to tell.

ORIGINAL: aminklein
Be sure to use incidence meters on the wing, horizontal stab and thrust lines. I am flying my third EsM LA7 (I do like them) but all of them come out of the jig with a tendency to climb.....putting about 1 degree of positive incidence on the horizontal stab ( while keeping the wing at zero) levels this one out nicely

My only question now is: What happened to your other two ESM's aminklein?

I got my Pilot from Scale AirCrew Supplies. Boris (Inamed him :-)) is a work of art, and is very authentic, Mr. Morely did a very nice job. That is the good news, the other side of the equation is that he was pretty expensive at 109 pounds plus shipping etc.

Hey fockewulf37, Thaba Raptor, and jmohn (or anyone else who has done this) - can you guys post a final pick of how your tail wheel setup went together? I found pics of your initial installs in this thread (pages 3, 5, 8) but no final pic of how the bay doors actually work or if the rudder cables ever got in the way of the hinges for the doors. Are you actuating those doors on the same servo that is retracting the wheel somehow?
I also see that you have a servo (or air retract) working the retract portion of the setup but what about the turning part?
I'm contemplating having the doors glued solid and leaving a hole for the wheel to retract in/out of, but it would be much funner have doors that worked.
...cockpit done, main wing done, engine installed, elevators done, mufflers tapped for smoke... much left to do...
PS - 1" DLE 30 standoffs worked absolutely perfect for fitting the XYZ 53 to the right location for prop clearance on the cowl. Gives about 1/4" clearance.

Ok some of you say 168mm is too tail heavy for cg. Some are going 155-160ish. After having flown the plane a bit, have any of you gone back and changed to 168 again or are you leaving your planes cg around 160?

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
I have flown mine well over 50 flights could be close to 100, I have mine up around 155 and have no intentions of moving it. Yes when inverted Ineed to lean hard on the stick to maintain level flight, but Ifly it scale and I prefer it nose heavy, I have the Seirra gear on it with no mods to the wing/mount point and the plane has never once come close to coming up on the nose. I know that is a long winded reply to no I have no intention of moving it. :-)

Thanks for your reply. The reason i asked is because mine is looking like it's gonna be right at stock, 168. I was hoping that isn't too tail heavy. The reason i bought this plane over other warbirds was for it's tendency to NOT nose over, so your comment about that makes me happy.

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Well my plane is done, CG is at 165mm or so. I'd like it to be 160 but I'll fly it as is and see how it does.
Speaking of flying, just tonight I was tidying up some last things, hoping to fly it this weekend. I turned everything on to check controls and the ignition for my XYZ 53cc started making the plugs spark every half second or so. So I took it outside and tried to fire it and it won't go. uuuggghhh!! I bench tested the motor about a month ago and it ran great. Super smooth. I think my ignition is a dud. Now I'm just hoping Octopus RC can help me out so I can get this thing in the air. It is ready to go.

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
I just wanted to post a follow up. Octopus RC is AWESOME! They are going to send me a new ignition. I don't know about you guys but of all the other companies I have dealt with in the rc world, some American, some Chinese - none of them are as quick to reply and as helpful with customer service. To me, customer service is everything. I am going to use Octopus RC for all my future rc needs.

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
I decided to remake my La-7 into the La-5FN, so I started with the new air intake for the compressor.
I want to have opening canopy, so this is the reason, why I prepared form for the fibreglass canopy frame.
The next step will be oil cooler and retractable tail wheel, because, I´ve hadn´t it yet.

Here are some pictures of my progress. I made a forms for the oil cooler and air intake from the depron (building foam).
Now I´m waiting for the fibreglass result.
I´ve also starded with the changes of the thail wheel. It will be pneumatic as the main landing gear.

Hi Laurent,
I am pleasured of your interest.
I have Squadron Signal Lavochkin in action and MBI Lavočkin La-5, All Russian fighters.
As base of the documentation I have russian book and pictures of the Lavočkin La-5FN. The next is manual for the pilots and aircraft engineer from the August 1944.

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
The manual which you want I have only in the paper form. In PDF I have manual for the La-7 and EKSMO La-5 both of them are in azbuka and they are too large for the upload.[]
Here are some new pictures.

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hi, I tried to make it smaller, but it is still too huge. I think about the upload on some server.
I made some small progress, but It is small, because I have to study.
Here is the final look of the tail wheel.
