I understand there are some later versions of engines that have a slightly hotter cam that can be retrofitted in early ones but as far as a manufacturer offering a lumpy cam option no Ihave never heard of one.

The cams on modern 4-strokes already have high performance timing.
I remember someone comparing the timing on Enya engines and it is was akin to competition cams used on car engines.[8D]

Any engine that makes its peak power at over 5250 rpm is already a high performance engine. Hp in any given size engine is pretty much proportional to the rpm at which it makes
its peak horsepower. As an example a normally aspirated chevy that makes 300 hp at 5200 would make about 600 to 800hp at 9000. You can see that these model engines are
pretty hot already. Additionally running methanol and nitro doesn't hurt anything either....can you say top fuel dragster.

Ihad the same thought when Istarted playing with 4S engines, I am an old Hot Rodder and swapped out a lot of cams. Have you ever played with the Desktop Dyno program its huge fun.

Someone did a how-to for swapping out the cam in the old Saito 45 for a later cam and it worked well. I followed suit with my old 40 and discovered additional issues, but I got it worked out and boy, did it pay off! I got an extra 1000 rpm on a 12x4 prop. Google "Saito heart transplant" and you'll get the original piece.
But of course the reason is that the old Saito 40/45 had an extremely conservative cam in the first place. As people have said above, any possible gains have probably long since been made by the manufacturers, just as Saito did with the 45S and the 50.
