CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
I have a need for mufflers for a 1/6th scale B-17 I am building. I have looked at bisson and slimline and they are to big. Has anyone had custom mufflers made by either of the two mentioned companies. I dont have alot of room and want to keep it all insde of the nacelle. Any thoughts ??

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
Memphis,
I had a custom muffler made for my G-62 by Jtec Radiowave. Sent them a mock up and a drawing and about three weeks later had my muffler.
Thinking you will need a small rectangular muffler with 1 exhaust tube going out the bottom. Probably be very similar to what they made for me.
Regards,
John B

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
I have two G-62 mufflers from Toni-Clark in Europe which are designed to fit in a Ziroli P-38 cowl
I think that's a tighter fit than your cowls, but not sure if you have the room on the backside for the rear-mounted cannister
Probably more expensive than the above options (if you can get them), but something else to explore.
It's nicely machined stuff

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
Your cheapest bet would be two Bennett G-62 mufflers. Pretty much a square box muffler with two stacks. They are small and compact, but they are a little on the loud side.

Sent Bisson an e-mail and drawing for a custom Zenoah GT-80 muffler designed to fit a 1/3 Jungmeister. Never received a response.
J'Tec on the other hand has been more than helpful and is currently building the mufflers based on the mockups I sent them.
Bennetts (B&B) G-62 muffler works well for me on a Ziroli Stearman. Compact, reasonably priced, and available but pretty loud.

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
If you need something custom made i can help you out. I make most of my mufflers out of .040 aluminum and are tig welded.
Here are a few pics of mufflers i have made.
Ziroli p38 with dle 55s
Ziroli p51 with a quadra 75
My custom 33% me 109 with a dle 222.
Have you considered modifying the stock zenoah muffler you have on the bench. If i was to build a muffler i would probably use a design like that considering the restraints in the cowl.

Memphis,
As Stuka Barry said, the Bennett mufflers are simple and work well. If they fit I would use them. Though looking at your picture I see the firewall is dropped back so not sure if tHe Bennets will fit.
Zipnz1 pics are great. Nice work!
So, do not want to derail your thread but, what B17 do you have? Must be pretty big to use G-62's for power.

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
I can attest to Zipnz1's ability to fabricate custom exhausts... Mike helped me with my 1/5 Tigercat project wherein he adapted stock DLE 111 can mufflers and adapted them to work in conjunction with a custom 18-exit port echaust collector ring:

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
IT IS A 1/6th SCALE SIZE...
G-62s are just right for it.
It will most likely weigh it at around 200 pounds rtf and will have a wingspan of somewhere around 16 feet long.
What motors would you use? G-26s?
50 pounds per motor sounds good to me.
Memphis Belle... PM me your address and I can send you a couple of bennett mufflers.

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
Wingspan models 1/6th scale, 16 foot wingspan and 13 foot fuse. Very hard to work from its size. rebel flyer, I called bennett and have the dimentions of there muffler and it will not work. I can make the stock muffler work but wanted to reduce the size of it for heat reasons.

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
Cool to see somebody is building one of the big wingspan b-17s in my local area.
Im guessing a big part of the muffler problems are from the engine being sunk into the cowl and I noticed you are using a extended prop drive on your g62s.
Are you using the extensions to clear a dummy radial engine or something?
I noticed you live not too far from me, if you need some help coming up with a muffler design i can help.

I did have to use the prop extentions to make room for the dummy radials. I can use the stock muffler but wanted to reduce the muffler size for heat reasons.

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
Its your preference what you like in your models. I myself like my mufflers to have the largest muffler volume that will fit in an allowable space. This allows the high speed gasses coming out of the engine room to slow down before exiting the muffler and the volume will take the bark out of the exhaust sound. The biggest robber of power is excessive back pressure, backpressure will quiet down an engine but at a cost. If possible you want a muffler design that is not too restrictive, especially in the area right out of the engine exhaust port.

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
Wes,
A Bennett muffler will work on that application if you reverse the muffler to exhaust UP into the cowl, and then reverse it 180 degree back down to exit the cowl.
I used a 3/4 X 1/2 X 1/2 copper tee and a 1/2 inch copper street 90, and used silver soldier(not regular soldier), to BRAZE the joint together.
I think I have a photo here...

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
Bennett exhaust divirter then... You will ALWAYS lose a little power any time you extend or make a turn in the outlet of a Bennett DIVIRTER.
I have had 16" tubes to a scale ehaust location, and it got quieter and I lost about 600 rps on my original top end. It was vastly overpowered though, and still did about 130mph.
When you have a special plane like this, you will be allowed to fly at ANY field you show up at, regardless of the noise issue...
Thats what earplugs are for.
This ain't Europe just yet...
I'm glad I fly where you can be as loud AND as fast as you want to be.
Hence the name... Rebel.
I will go pop some popcorn now, and wait for the naysayers to rain down on me.

RE: CUSTOM G-62 MUFFLERS
I put the second coat of resin on the wings so I will have to wait til sunday to try and fit the stock muffler. It will be very close to the nacelle so I might use some BVM heat paint on those areas. I will post some pics whan I do this.
