If your old unit is AM if can be done and I did it with the help of two very smart electronic type fellows and a good scope, very successfully. I choose to convert my original 45 year old AM Orbit using the Hitec system and off course Hitec is my preferrence for all my contemperary needs.
Now here is an interesting dicotomy as a result of this conversion. There are no modern features at all and of course no servo reversing and this is all as expected and desired. But, because the inflight battery telemetry feature of the Hitec system is a function of the receiver/ module and has nothing to do with the transmitter I actually have a system with no servo reversing but I do have inflight airborn battery pack low voltage warning (telemetry)

What I was trying to indicate was PCM seems to be a problem for a simple conversion Which I did discover. Since I am not an electronics type, yes while there were only three traces cut from the RF output section and routed to the Hitec module the challange for a non electronics type such as myself is of course to isolate and find those three traces. I was fortunate indeed to have the help of a talented young technition to help.
The Orbit project was a big success of course but the first conversion I pursued was either my nine channel Futaba single stick or my 9 channel JR single stick (both PCM) only. The latest is a complete gutting of the JR and installation of Hitec Prism 7X components except for the gimbles.

Sorry John, didn't mean for my post to sound as if it were an insult. It is easier than it seems, unless one is not good with a solder iron! 
You are right, a "PCM" presents more difficulty and the majority thought it couldn't be done. However, there is a thread here or on RC* that describesa Futaba PCM (single stick) conversion. A Spektrum DM9 or the XPS J-1 2.4 module will work in your JR Century 7 radio. All in all, one can send the radio in (like to RadioSouth)as the cost isn't that exorbitant I like that you converted the Orbit, I recall many Orbit radios in use back in the late sixties and early seventies. Actually just bought the 8FG today got $90 off of it on tower plus a $90 free receiver, Could'nt pass that up.

Greetings,
I'm not very good at finding the right info in this forum but you seem like the right person to contact. I have been looking for information on converting my DX6i "Flaps" and "Gear" switches to potentometers so as to control the amount of flap and gear as I need it. If this is something you are not experienced in, I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction to get the answer.
My DX6i is out of warranty and I am able to work on it's internals. Just reciently installed the HK back lighted screen kit sucessfully.

After starting out with a Futaba 4FG and 6FG, I had the X-388, then a 10SXII. I LOVED that 10SXII, but the motherboard took a dump after five years, JR had already dropped that radio in favor of the 10X, and I didn't want a 10X (for several reasons).
So I got a Futaba 9Z in 2003, and have been very happy since. I'm told that my Xmas present this year is a 2.4 gHz Futaba 12Z. I'm not so sure about this 2.4 business, but it looks like I'm going to "get into it" whether I want to or not...

After I was finished with my quest for a new radio and decided to just fix my 9-C I read a review of the Airtronics new 10. I'm not a big fan of Airtronics at all but I was very impressed with that radio and put it on my list of maybes. How does it compare to the 9-C in mixing and ease of use? I know no one that has it but I'm still interested in it. So far the Hitec A-9 is still on the top of my list. Just wondering.

ofthe fields that I fly at, I really like my SD10G and once you get use to the radio it's ok to program one thing I dont like about the Airtronics is if you want change
the wing type such as running the elevators or ailrons on separate channels to switch from type to the other you have to erase all your programing and start over.

Just sold my 9c after many great seasons of use. going to run a futaba 10c for myself and a 7c for my son. we are joining the 2.4 party late in the game, but I am excited by the flexibility and safety.
