Just a joke, sorry you're so thin-skinned.
It was a woman flying, horribly at that. Had it been a guy I'd have been more harsh, and mocking. I've trained and mentored many female pilots. They did well, once we got past their defensive attitudes and they realized I was treating them exactly as any guy. If you're a tool working with me, I'll spare no quarter and will pull your chain, repeatedly. The women I've worked with did great, it's the guys who were the divas generally.
I'm Polish, and can take a Polish joke. Heard any good ones ?

Not thin skinned at all. I can take a joke as good as anybody. It's just that if someones joke requires that much explanation, it must not have been a very good one to begin with.

The humor (if any) would have stemmed from the stereotype that women don't drive well (or fly in this case) so....I gotta side with NitroWoman on this one! [X(]

I may not be that funny, but you gotta admit she was a pi$$-poor pilot. Took a PR event and turned it into a near-tragedy. She was very lucky.

I'm going to take adifferent approach to the landing. After making the initial bad judgement to land on what turned out to be not the runway, she did an excellent job of executing a landing where the plane has the ability to take off again very well. Appears to be very little damage. She could have paniced and tried to overcorrect for the initial error and really caused a problme. While I would have a chat with her about why she thought the side road was the runway I wouldnt be to harsh as the end result turned out well.

If she couldn't see the people on what she 'thought' was the runway, she needs her eyes checked. Some of the pilot & mechanic comments about the hard impact on other sites believe there was appreciable damage to the airframe. Far from salvaging the arrival, the pilot was more passenger than crew after the impact. At impact the damage was done. Only taxiing to parking remained.
Trying to touch down before or 'on the numbers' is chancy, especially with larger aircraft, as it eliminates the margin of error for gusts, mechanical problems, etc.

EddieC, I'm sure you can appreciate that landing in front of a large audience raises the pucker factor quite a bit. I can relate having flown into to Oshkosh during EAAs Airventure. No matter how many times I've flown into that airport, it is harder during airshow week. While we all aspire to perfection, we are human and make mistakes as this pilot did. There but for the grace of God go I......
Implying the error was the result of the pilots gender is simply wrong. It not just being politically incorrect. It's a slam to every woman. Maybe with your close friends, they know you well enough to know you really don't mean it that way, but here among a lot of strangers, it may lead us to think less of you, and I'm sure that was not your intention.

Mike, thanx for a fairly neutral response.
My assumption that we've progressed much in the realm of gender equality was obviously in error. I thought that, by now, we've moved on to face larger, more important issues. There's a blatantly racist remark on a popular thread here on RCU, and not one of the hundreds of viewers has said one word in protest or outrage. In the same vein, I find it odd that those so bothered by by what is, at worst, a non-PC comment, say nothing about an incident that was very nearly a tragedy. I really don't care if it was a woman, and my remark was just a flip response. I doubt anything I say on this toy airplane site changes anyone's attitude, prejudices or world view.
As to pucker factor, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Man, woman, purple people-eater, it was a mistake having that person at the controls. Mistakes get made, sure, but this was so unnecessary: good weather, airplane working fine, no glare, distractions or traffic. And the error wasn't minor, it was glaring. The problem wasn't the woman, it was the pilot, and the sooner everyone realizes that, the sooner it will come into perspective.

[8D] Kidding ! , just razzin ya here a bit Eddie , and yes , I DO know you meant no real insult , people joke about "women Drivers" (which I am not) and Fightin Irish (guilty as charged) all the time and I really don't take offense . It's the way things are said that means more than the words themselves sometimes , and I think you were just tryin to get a chuckle rather than condemn every woman on the planet as a lousy driver . Correct ?

I was on the ramp at a small Northern Michigan airport and noticed a Citation parked nearby had 2 female crew. I knew the ramp guy fueling it, it was a nice spring day, and I was in a mood. The ladies were tidying the interior in preparation for their departure, so I rather loudly said to the fuel guy, 'Jim, did you see they're lettin' the stewardesses fly the airplanes now?' They couldn't get out of that cabin fast enough! I made nice, we chatted, all was well.
