RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build
I'm starting to plan my struts. I'd like to build them so they can fold flat for easier transportation. I've looked at cubman's folding strut plans. I like the idea of of using 1/2 of a butterfly nut and a ball link for the wing end of the main struts. On first thought I'm not super excited to run a 4-40 rod all the way down the strut to the fuse. Can anyone think of a good stury way to attach a ball-link within some k&s streamline tubing. So far the best I can think of is to shape a hardwood plug to insert into the end of the tubing and pass a short length of 4-40 rod through it and bend the rod on the otherside of the plug so I can't pull out then jb weld the plug into the tube. Any other ideas?

Uh-oh! It looks like somebody might still finish his Cub before I finish mine! DANG!
And speaking of parts in the box, why is there so many left over in my box? [X(]

Neddy191..you could be a big cheater like me and order a set of Hangar 9 struts...a little expensive, but really nice. Of course, if you are a purist, you wouldn't like that idea. I still think CubMan has the best ideas on these things.

when i built mine i just wanted to go with(as crazy as it sounds) the stuff in the box. i didn't want another build where i changed everything in the box that was given to me and source all new parts. i did go with Robarts though for our field. i like the idea of the collapsible struts but i have them on my Decathalon and really didn't like them. the vibration killed them. my wing is a one piecer version so i just opt to leave them attached 100% of the time. i toss the wing in the back upside-down and transport that way whether it had struts or not. i really haven't found it to be a problem and like how easy it is to setup at the field.
on another note, i'd like to get a set of skis made for mine. any ideas on these? doesn't look like the majority could use them based on your location but they would be so handy for all the lakes that have frozen over and make PERFECT runways!!!

As for strut attachment, I know it's not scale, but I was thinking of borrowing from the Mud Duck and ues a small strap hinge for the attach points. You remove the hinge pin and use a cotter pin in its place.
I'll be using cubman's fold-down-strut option although modified for the stock wooden struts.

Hey guys, little by little, it's coming along. I'm finished covering the wings and ailerons and have also finished the elevator and rudder. The wings were done last weekend, just never had time to post anything.
I say they are finished, but that's not entirely true. I plan on pinking them too as well as the rib stitching. I hope to do my own rib stitching with Robert's help (aka. acerc) and I will use Pinkit.
I think the toughest part of covering so far, is triming a straight line. I'm hoping the pinking can cover my multitude of sins! Here are some progress photos: (By the way, if anyone sees anything I'm doing wrong or could make easier, let me have it. I open to constructive criticism!)

Agreed. Your pinking tape will hide a multitude of sins. Make sure that your razor blade is sharp David, don't buy cheap blades as there are differences in sharpness between blades. Sometimes to get a clean cut I usea razor two or three times before replacing it...

Thanks for the vote of confidence there guys!
Spent a little time last night making some 2-56 bolts from philips head screws. Again, I have to thank acerc for the idea and how to do it. Quite simple; cut off the head and solder a nut to the top, grind it to shape and.... voila! Simple! Thanks Robert!

Well this thread sure has died! Nothing happening anymore?
I've been told by a certain someone that I need to post my progress, been putting it off too long. So here ya go Robert. I've started painting. Bought my HVLP gun from Harbor Freight for 30 some bucks and the thing works great! Can't beat the price for what you get.
Anyway, the photos. I haven't gotten real far yet. I shot the struts, one side at a time because I was getting too many runs trying to shoot them hanging. The wood parts are really looking nice. I got a very good match with the sample paint from Home Depot. Matched the Solartex perfectly! I started preping the cabin for painting. That shouldn't take too long. Not a whole lot to paint in there.
That's all for now! TTFN!

I'm using the sample paints from Home Depot. They sell Behr flat latex in a small container for under 3 bucks! The color match is exact! Once the latex is completely dry I'm putting on a coat of Top Flite's LustreKote, Cub yellow. Even though it's slightly different shade of "Cub Yellow", it's so transflucent that is doesn't change the color of the latex underneath, it just seals it and protects it. I just don't want to get too glossy of a finish. I will however be clear coating all the Solartex as well so it should still match. Time will tell.

Looks good CFF!
No new work on the Cub for me. I have to prep for the Expo at the Unidome in Iowa so the Cub is sitting on the side of the table while I work on foamies and a new quad copter.
Thanks for the Depot idea, I was wondering where I was going to get paint matched to the cream 21st Century fabric/film I'm using.

You're quite welcome, T.M. Actually it wasn't my idea, I think it likely came from Robert or Anthony. They are full of excellent ideas!
So... you're working on foamies and a new quad copter... Okay, I gotta ask; just what is it you do? It sounds like fun!

Technically I'm a registered Electrical Engineer and design power systems for roads, streets, flood control, buildings, things like that. If it takes electricity on a building project I get involved. [8D]That pays the bills. What I love to do is design and build anything that flies.
Here's the expo page: http://www.expodome.org/
Here's aP-38 I designed for the noon airshow last year: http://www.expodome.org/Expo%20photo...e/DSC_1806.JPG
and yours truly on the flight line (Warning graphic and scary..).: http://www.expodome.org/Expo%20photo...e/DSC_1760.JPG
The Cub is my first real balsa kit build and darn Robert has me interested in a 1/3 scale Pitts. But that planewill be down the road a bit.
I'd really like to tackle a 1/4 scale, 10' spanOV-10 Bronco (I have the plans about 25% done) but I need to save up for that one. Mama promised me a new enclosed trailer this year and I don't want to push my plane budget too much. LOL

Very cool T.M.! Wish I could try flying some of my electrics indoors, especially in a place like that. I'm an electrical engineer too, only OJT/Self taught, no degree to back it up and in the packaging industry. I wish I could say my job paid my bills, because I'd rather be flying!
That OV-10 sounds like it will be quite a project! Scratch build obviously if you doing the plans yourself. Build thread????
By the way, that picture you say is of "your's truely" looks nothing like the one here on RCU. Maybe it's just the glasses....

Sorry I haven't checked in in a bit. Wow David you've come a long way grasshopper. It's looking very nice, you should be proud of your work.

Well VJ, it's live and learn. I've learned not to try to use latex paint directly on aluminum sturts. Yeah, it don't stick too well. Time to strip it and start over. The rest of it though is coming out really nice, even if I do say so myself! [8D]
List of things to do: Strip struts of paint; Pick up some primer; Get more latex paint from Home Depot.....
