Hi Dan;

Good to hear from you, a little scaled down from your operational dual yokes, but agreed, sort of fun thinking of the small details that I couldn’t get to before.

A quick question for you fellows, anyone mounted or thought about mounting a “Go Pro” or similar small video camera to your 182’s.

If so have you considered the location. I was thinking inside the cockpit looking out the front windshield but don’t know how clear the windscreen is from distortion. I’ve complicated that thought with the 185 due to the cross braces on the dashboard.

I was thinking of a separate removable mounting bracket attached to the wing lift strut hold down point on the wing.
Not the strut itself, there is vibration in that at low rpm.
Let me know your thoughts .

I’ll be in touch.

Regards
Randy

Hi Fellows;

Just reassembling my tail wheel assembly and making a few mods for added strength.
This is another update for Tommy re future 185’s.

Originally the rod that goes through the fork wheel assembly is aluminum and flared on the end to fasten in place.
(see attached pics before and after)

It was starting to loosen so I replaced the aluminum rod with a 1/4 - 20 pan head machine bolt. I then used a thin nut to hold in place. No movement or loosening now.

Tommy had initially sent a 3.25” tail wheel however I changed it to 3.5”. I felt it was a little more in keeping with my main wheel size.
There is still enough clearance for the 3.5” tail wheel.

I’ll be in touch.
Regards
Randy

Hi Fellows;

Here are some pictures of the C-185 all together with the new paint design.
( I'll send a few posts of the pics since RCU seems to be a little slow loading these days).

I was hopeful that it wasn’t going to snow on Saturday for some pictures on the grass.
Oh well, I had to shovel the snow in the back yard Sunday to get some contrast.

Next thing to add are my nav lights and finish the interior.

Best regards
Randy

PS She’ll look “sweet” with the floats on her. Just like a good old hard working “bush plane”.

More Pics

A set of wheel skies is an option also. Not really that hard to make up, just takes time.
I suppose I have enough on my plate for now.

Hi 68 Mustang;

Just re sent my message to your personal e-mail address.
You should get it now.

Hi Snobird;

There are a few fellows on the RCU web that have put some threads together re the DC-3 build, haven't heard much lately or seen any videos yet.

Agreed, it seems to be a pretty nice model for twin application. Tommy has been a great guy to deal with re the C-185 fabrication.

Hi Fellows;

Tommy has now added the Cessna 185 to his fleet for those interested asked me to assist him in distributing the model in US and Canada which I have agreed to.

If you go to his web page http://www.tmmy.pantown.com he has the 185 pictures with the remainder of information to follow.

There is also another 185 he is completing for me that will accommodate a twin cylinder.

If you have any questions please feel free to send me a PM through RCU and include your e-mail address.

Best regards
Randy

Hi Fellows;

I have been busy getting the models ready for the upcoming season and waiting for the weather to turn for the better. Looks like everything is coming together nicely.

Just to advise Tommy has updated his web page with his available models which includes the C-185. http://www.tmmy.pantown.com
Also included are the specs and costing. For those interested if there are any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

As previously mentioned Tommy is doing another shell for me that will use a twin cylinder engine.
This model will have the split cowling, bubble windows (pilots and passenger side), and be fitted with stock exhaust location.
(Easier to accomplish with the twin over the 4 cylinder).

I was at the local float base over the winter to get a few ideas of paint design and colours. Nothing confirmed yet but I’m leaning toward the 1980 C-185 series, and thinking my colour will be orange and black on white.
(see attached pic but with orange and black)

Regards
Randy

PS float conversion is coming along nicely, just had to re-organize my order of assembly re pictures and video for Tommy.

Hi All;

Just back in from a few days away. Nice to get back to the building table.

I hope to get a few "in flight" pics and video of the 185 with the new paint colour and design in the next few days.

Have also been asked to do an article in one of our model magazines of the 185 along with having it on display at one of our full sized “Fly In/Splash In” events.

Summer is on its way, lots going on..........

I’ll be in touch

Hi Fellows;

I haven’t been on the thread for a while but have been busy behind the scenes.

The weather up here in July was very hot, nice for a change, I’m not complaining.
August brought cool nights and mornings with warm days, perfect for model flying in my opinion.

November has been pretty good for flying but with cool weather temps. The last time out it was 36 degrees F, no issue with cooling for the engine............

I’ll fly as long as I can before it gets too cold on the fingers and equipment.

The C-185 has been performing very well and has been a big hit at the display shows at the full size “Fly Ins”.
One more upcoming display then into the shop for the float conversion and nav light install.

Tommy is completing the second C-185 shell with the mods I recommended. I’ve asked for some pics for the thread.

Attached are some pics from some November flights and a recent display early in the morning before it got busy.

I’ll be in touch with updates and pics for the float conversion.

Hi Fellows;

Well I got back out flying today, not normal for here but I’m not complaining.
Temps. were in the high 40’s with a mild crosswind.

I had a chance to convince my wife and daughter to come along for some “in flight” pics and videos with the new paint scheme.
(Attached are a few pics, video to follow.)
I figure this was my last chance this year for reasonable weather, next few days are showing cold, rain/snow and windy.

The 185 will now come back into the shop for the float conversion.

I’ll be in touch.
Best regards
Randy

Hi Fellows:

Happy New Year to all.

I haven’t been on the thread for a while, I’ve been doing more flying than building. I have had a chance to get a fair bit of “stick time” with the 185.
A lot of fun flying it on wheels, just like a big trainer.

The weather up here was pretty reasonable, actually flying into early December. (Global warming!!!!)
That now has come to an end with a lot of the white fluffy stuff on the ground.

Over the holiday season I pulled out all my notes, e-mails and measurements to refresh my memory of the float conversion.
The model is now disassembled and time to get down to business with the changeover.

I had to figure out a system to “cradle” the floats and fuse.
I had one from before however for smaller models,I didn’t know if it was going to work, but it is doable, although at its limits.

I set everything up just to re familiarise myself and get a feel for the alignment issues etc.
I find this is one of the time consuming portions of the changeover.
But now’s the time to check and “triple check” to determine float step location relative to the C/G and before the hardware is cut and drilled to size.
Ryan at Sea Commander did a great job when he fabricated the floats ensuring each float measurement were the same.

The attached pics. are just a general idea.
The final float strut lengths and width will be to scale.

Just waiting for the remaining strut material to arrive.

I’ll be in touch.

Regards
Randy

Hi Dan:

Good to hear from you, thanks for your comments.
It's sort of nice doing some work on the model again, especially since the weather outside is snowy.

Once I receive my hardware it shouldn't take to long for the change over, I will also install my nav lights at the same time.
Tommy is watching closely with the float install, I believe he will be offering it as an option to the 185 out of the factory.

I'll certainly have pictures and videos of the model on the water and flying.

Attached is another pic more in keeping to the final position of the floats relative to the position on the fuse etc.
A few things I want to reference to the full size manual re float step and C/G.

Stay in touch.

Regards
Randy

Do the floats have to have little rudders on the back and if so do they move in conjunction with the rudder?

Hi Dan:

Thanks for your question.
The floats will be equipped with operational water rudders that will run off a pulley system in conjunction with the aircraft rudder.
Pretty well the same set up as the full size 185. Aircraft rudder alone won't give the directional control needed on the water.

I will also have the rudders retract during take off and landing as the full size.

Attached is a picture of a C-206 on EDO 3430 floats and the rudder system I will be using.

Best regards
Randy

Randy,
Those floats look awesome! Looks like you will be seeking water before the thaw! How long are those floats, love to see a picture of you holding the floats for a perpective of size. I've already looked at 182's with floats because of you...

Hi Jim:

Welcome to the thread and thanks for your comments.

(I also just sent you PM via the regular e-mail system).

In answer to your questions, the best I can hope for right now is an early spring thaw.

The floats are 85" in length and designed around the EDO 3430 series.
At the time the drawings were made we were going ahead with an EDO 3500 series with retractable landing gear.
Unfortunatley the landing gear manufacturer couldn't commit to the project, so straight floats it is.

Attached is a picture for reference size and also a picture of a C-182 on amphib. floats.
Nice to hear you had thought about outfitting your C-182 on floats. "She" would look great.

Full sized C-182's with float conversions are becoming more popular up around where I fly.

Stay in touch.

Best regards
Randy

Hi Cessna fans,

No pics yet but I'm at a fairly advanced stage with my ASM 182 and a float convertion which has retracts to make it amphibious. The inspiration for the amphib was the lanky non scale undercarraige. and that desperately needed to be changed!

I've another ASM 182 on the way to me and the option to make that into a 182RG is very very real having worked out a near scale retract for the mains. The nose wheel will retract backwards which isn't scale I know but I think I can keep that a secret.

Once things have been proven and tested I'll share more if anyone's interested.

Cheers,

Stew.
