G'day NIEDM, This is the page address of my mod on my Spit wheel wells using aluminum drink cans, back on page 54. There are a number of pics http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_49...54/key_/tm.htm

Thanks Warwix and Maverick... I also checked out that web link and it gave me some ideas. It looks like I'm going to have to consume some adult beverages in order to make new wheel well liners....

Thanks again,

Bob

They are certainly worth doing that.

Ironically, I think mine is close to 6 years old or thereabouts. It's been flying a 'good while'. (Every flight has certainly been good while in the air.)

Not really a big fan of the brownish color scheme though on the H9. Id have to paint it closer to the grey/green camo.
Found this pic online......dont see many Spitfires with British markings AND a shark mouth.

Australia had a few though, but mostly the entire plane was grey/black

The picture was taken after retrofitting a new cowl. The cowl was needed because I'd swapped the muffler to a J-Tec wrap around and their exhaust stacks came out in a different place. And since then, I've scratch built a far more realistic set of stacks... and not gotten around to installing them.

I knew, but was caught out that I'd selected a view showing an unfinished state.

Those pipes are somewhat distinctive and not easily made. There will be a story to tell when they're done.

Hi Kahloq,

that is an interesting colour scheme but alas its not a spitfire. It looks to me like the Supermarine Mk26, the name Supermarine was bought by an Australian company that turns out 3/4 size spitfire 'replicas' powered by either V6 or V8 motors. Apart from the eliptical wings and a passing resemblance to the prototype they're not really that similar (although excellent planes, I'm told).
Anyway the oversize cockpit and small diameter prop gives this one away in this (excellent) photo that from this angle looks astonishingly convincing.

Just as an aside and at the risk of preaching to the already informed, the brown and green colour scheme was used on all aircraft when the UK was on the defensive, ie comouflaging aircraft on the ground from airborne attack from '39 to about '41 , but when Britain went on the offensive attacking German targets in France the grey/green was used on fighters as the aircraft were more often than not over the English channel so were harder to spot over water in this guise. Personally I like 'em both, a Battle of Britain era MK2 spit would look wrong in anything else, similarly a Mk9 would look wrong in the earlier brown and green, (although they did manage to just about carry it off for the movie!).
I need another hobby. Badly.

We are talking about a Hangar 9 Spitfire, not a Comp-Arf or top gun level build. No one at the field would know the difference between an MKII and an MKIX. That neiong saod...if I get another one...I will paint it grey/green in flat colors to make it look better and like last time, put two large underwing scoops on it instead of the MKII small one on the one wing. So it would resemble an MKIX anyway.

To be honest, I'm much more of a Luftwaffe person myself, so am not that particular about the differences in mark numbers and what changed on the Spitfire.

Just picked up another H9 Spitfire today. Have already installed e-flite 60-120 electric retracts and now am painting the plane with primer gray. Also..have ordered decals and such from Callie-graphics.
Plane will be powered by a power 60 electric motor on 6s 8000mah spinning a 16x10 2 blade turnigy type E cherry wood prop. While I wanted to really use a 3 blade prop, and may down the line, I already have an appropriate size2 blade spinner left over from something else.

Hey Kahloq,

What are your plans for battery hatch? I've seen some folks convert this plane to electric and build a custom battery bay and hatch in the fuse but looks tricky. Would love to see pics as your build comes along. Good luck.

There's a nice little thread on rcgroups about how to do a battery hatch for the H9 Spitfire. I will be trying to duplicate that as best I can.
Here is the thread. Nice lot of pics to show what he did too.

Here are a few shots of mine....repainted in later 1941-44 colors and depicting closer to a mark IX with the merlin exhaust stacks instead of the 3 manifold collector thingys from the early marks. Proper underwing radiators for a MKIX as well as a small air intake on the top of the nose offset. I still need to put the wheel pants on.
Retracts are 85 degree e-flite electrics. Plane now has a turnigy 400kv g60 running on 6s 8000 and a castle ice 100amp esc

Here's a flight vid of mine. This was the 2nd flight. First flight almost ended in disaster. I had CG'ed it according to the manual, but it flew quite tail heavy. Additionally, the battery hatch came off and I had to spend a good deal of time looking for it. I had 8 rare earth magnets holding it on, but it still came off. I have ordered some micro piano hinges and will afix one side of the hatch permantly so it cant come off again.

2nd flight, I used clear tape to make sure the hatch didnt come off in flight.

Oh....I have in the past, but always had to have someone holding a normal digi cam and often times was hard for them to keep the plane in view. For that spitfire video, I used a Drift HD helmet type cam. Its much easier to capture flights with and doesnt give the fish eye view panoramic stretchy look as some GoPro cams do.

Hi Guys,
I have the spitfire on the way and a muffler from Keleo-Creations, I have a questions for you guys that use that setup, where did you put the on/off switch? you cannot put it on the side of the fuse because of the muffler so what do you think? a hidden hatch? inside the canopy?
Appriciate any thought..

I use two batteries and two switches (for redundancy), and I put both switches inside the fuselage, with a thin piece of piano wire exiting through the side of the fuselage. A tiny wheel collar at the end of the piano wire enables me to pull out for "on". Push back in for "off", obviously.
The Keleo exhaust is really cool. I also put Lado retracts on this bird last autumn. Sweet.

Why not make a hatch and hide the switches?

This is bigger then you need, but I can access everything inside the fuse without taking the wing off. I now have a small piano hinge on it. Stays closed from the other side with magnets
