Best Gearing
Hi all
Can someone tell me what is the best way to gear a 2wd 1/10 slash vxl so that i do not get as much power from it?
I have tried training mode which is too slow and sport mode which is rapid on 2s2p lipos and i am looking for something inbetween if possible?
I am hoping to find a mid way point between training and sport re power and hopefully this will also keep temperatures down which i take it in turn will prolong esc/motor and battery life plus extend battery run times.
I have read with the correct gearing motors and esc will stay cool.
All help appriciated

If you are running a 17 tooth pinion on the motor... change it to a pinion with less teeth. 14, 15, 16 tooth. Also you can put a bigger spur gear on for about the same effect. Stick with pinion gears first.

Is the standard a 17 tooth pinion?
Do you know if changing to a 15 tooth will help in keeping motor temps down prolong the life of the esc and produce longer run times?

I used 17 tooth as an example.. Check out what is on your truck (what size pinion) and drop a couple teeth. This will slow the truck a bit, keep temps down and yeah longer run times. You wouldn't be drawing as much power going slower.

Will it cause problems for the esc as it will not be getting full power?
I read somewhere that he esc needs to be able to be run at full draw sometimes? Did you hear anything about that?

Well, every now and then you can punch it out. When your running full throttle, themotor will still be spinning as fast as it ever has. You'll just be going slower because the gearing is different. It will also be easier on esc and motor running on a smaller pinion gear. It won't be so hard for the motor to turn, and you'll get more torque. You might even be able to lift the front end!Dropping teeth is always a good thing, except if you go below 12T. The danger is gaining teeth because with a bigger pinion, the harder for the motor to accelerate and hotter you motor and esc temps are going to be. It is good to punch it out every now and then just to burn out the dust in the motor, but it'll still have the same effect whether you have high or low gearing.

Yeah, pretty much. When I say torque, I mean it will be stronger. You will be able to push heavier things. Your run times might be a bit longer, because it's not drawing so many amps from the battery to try to get the motor turning. Like I said, gearing down is always a good thing.

I'm just thinking out loud here: If he gears down, that will lower his top speed. And he will get more torque (better acceleration). But the motor is going to tend to be spinning faster in doing so. So wouldn't that mean more draw on the battery?

Wait....don't brushless motors use less juice the faster they go, and draw the most current (amps) only when accelerating?
But yeah Henry, gearing down is easy. It will slow them down. Run-times will vary, of course, by how it's driven.

Hi
No wont be starting the track until mid May.
Has anyone else got views on what EXT2ROB has wrote re motor spinning faster so it will use more juice from the battery plus wear the motor out quicker and also reduce runtimes?

Hey Henry. I don't think the motor spinning faster necessarily means that it will wear out faster. Brushless motors can last a long long time, as long as they are not over-heated which causes the magnets to loose integrity. It might put a little more stress on the motor bearings, but a little maintenance once in a while should make that almost a non-issue. In all things electronic, heat is your enemy.
I have a link to a really good article on LiPo batteries, their care & feeding, very detailed info, and was looking to see if he had one explaining brushless motors, but can't find one. According to traxxas, the stock pinion on your ride is a 23 tooth. They show all the way down to a 16. You could drop a couple of teeth at a time, and see if that gets you were you want to be. My bashing partner runs his slash for his son, at an 18. It slows the top speed down, but as mentioned it will increase the bottom end, or torque. Are you running lipos, or nihms? A temp gun is always good to have on hand, but going down should not cause any heat issues.

I would say that with a smaller pinion, the motor would spin the same. BUT your drive train will spin slower...... (car goes slower) because of the smaller pinion.
According to westoakmech, the slash 2x4 has a 23 tooth... I'd say go to a 20t and from there you can go up to a 21 again or down to 18 or 19.
