Default Cool F111 Belly landing

Pretty interesting. Seems like it could have been a little smoother.

Smoother? Really? He took the arresting cable while still flying! Anyway, thanks for the cool video.

Thought it was pretty dang good. He hit the cable, and it yanked them out of the sky. No fire... and they walked away. Good job !!

Kudos to the pilot. Try that with an RC turbine. BOOM!

Strange remark from you , It has been done several time with Rc jets and no problems , It all depends on the Pilot.

I have an old friend that flew them in Airforce airshows with the T-birds., I witnessed him tail-walking one a few hundred ft off the surface of the Mississippi river during a show, as good as Ralf Loseman at Joe Nall.

Incredible effort by the pilots! Even though it all worked out favorable , I would have to question the command decision to attempt that landing , why would they put those pilots at risk rather than have them punch out over the ocean somewhere? IMO the pilots are worth more $ than the airplane.

Just curious why they'd use the tail hook and grab a cable though? I've seen video's of full scale fighter jets doing gear up landings where they just set it down softer and rode it out, but I don't know much about the airplane itself, does it land at a much higher speed and carry that much more weight/momentum so the extra scraping down the runway would be a worse decision? Great flying either way, I'm just curious, the runway was obviously very long. On that same note, when the jet is obviously going to be badly damaged anyway, wouldn't it make more sense to land it on the grass rather than the pavement or would it dig in and risk flipping? Not being a dick, I'm just actually wondering.

Just curious why they'd use the tail hook and grab a cable though? .

Once you plop the jet down on the runway with out the cable. You've got to slide to a stop, which increases the damage to the bottom of the plane and makes for more friction and more heat and higher chance of fire. Plus once you're sliding you have zero amount of control. So if it starts to spin or slide off the runway you start getting secondary damage to the runway lights or other equipment. There's no guarantee that it will continue to slow down if it hits the grass. It may actually accelerate a little.

Snagging the cable gives you at least a start at keeping it down the center line and the cable reels disapate a LOT of engergy slowing the plane down much faster than if it was sliding uncontrolled.

Note that these barrier cables are not meant to stop the landing aircraft like a aircraft carriers system. They are only meant to get some control on a run away jet. i.e. no breaks no steering.

This is an old video....

They had a string of pilots working the sim to trying to figure out what the best option was while the A/C circled overhead for 3hrs. Belly landing came up as the choice, and given the outcome, it was the right thing to do!

Very low time pilot in the drivers seat too.

Thanks

The crew egress system has always fascinated me on this platform.

Rob.
