Default New builders first day in the shop

Kevin's first day in the shop scratch building a balsa glider of his own design. Kevin is our house keepers eight year old son and he wants to be a airplane designer when he grows up. I set him up with his own building table and supplies for Christmas and this is his first day building on his own. He and his sister are coming over one Saturday a month and we are building in the shop together. We got him the
Guillows 4000 series of balsa kits to get started building and he forgot to bring the glider kit so he asked can use some of the extra wood in the rack, how could anyone refuse a request like that froma child. He is eyeing up my F-15 kit sitting on the shelve and says he will build that one soon.

God bless you.You are a good man.Great to get kids interested in something while they are young. That way they are focused on their future.Hopefully he will stay interested in this hobby. He might one day become an aeronauticle engineer some day.

Best regards,

Thank you for the compliment Walter. Kevin is very excited about planes from seeing them at my shop. He wanted to be a lawyer at first but has changed his mind for now. Janice and I were not blessed with children and like helping out when we can especially when they have an interest in something positive. Kevin just finished his plane and we test flew it in the hallway and flew great it did; he is very anxious for spring and to go flying with me this year. Best of all he designed and built it by himself today mostly by looking at the old magazines I have laying around the shop.

Kevin found this Midwest kit in my upstairs stash of kits. He has put it on our build list already.

Ted, my wife promised him my guitar while I was taking the picture. Thanks for all the nice words everyone. My fathers hobby was fishing and he went every week with five other guys until the first one passed away and they stopped because it was not the same. One of my joys is being a good role model when there isn't one around all the time. Kevin learned today why he needs to pay attention in school so he can read and understand plans and saw first hand why fractions were nessasary when he had to cut the wing out and when he sized tha tail. I wished I was as smart at eight as Kevin, it will be hard to stay ahead of him soon I am sure.

Ron, Great job, It's nice to see people working with our youth. I have been flying for over 40 years but can't get our oldest grandson away from the tv and video games. What's your secret?

Awesome! My son is two, I have a stack of guillows kits waiting for him :-) He's getting the cool ones I never go when I was a kid, the Corsair and the p-38... He can name over ten airplanes by sight so far, lots of great kids books on airplanes. And he's been to the Boeing museum of flight four times already. If he doesn't dig airplanes, I will survive, but I won't go down without a fight!
