Did not use them so just talking here...  Considering the kit uses CA hinges, I would think that 1/8" hinges would be sufficiently strong.  There is plenty of thickness in the joint to use, the 3/32", however.

It's also a sweetheart to build. I didn't realize what a great first airplane this was until I built my second!

I have to say that it only took me 10 mins to get all the wing covering wrinkles out, so things seem to have improved...

I put a Saito 200 R3 3-cylinder radial engine on mine.... and it is a joy to fly..... but nowhere near as cool as Linkan2's UMS 7-35 radial engine.

That is the definition of AWESOME !!!!

-Chuck
I have that same R3 engine and pt 17 arf,and was wondering about the combo. How did the cg work out?Did you lower the tank?It would be greatly appreciated if you could post a few pics.please!
I was going to ask the same question as I like the pt-17 + Evo 7-35 radial combo very much. I already saw the helpful photos of the engine installation from Linkan2, but would like to know how the CG turned out.
Thanks

Federico

Any body know what the interplane struts are made of please? I hate so many fiddly bits (small screws and nuts) for assembly, so i would like to tap the strut holes (6-32 looks like a good fit), and just use cap screws.
TIA

The struts are steel covered with fiberglass and filler (autobody type filler). I'm not sure that I understand your concern but if you are trying to elimiate the nuts and bolts holding the brackets I would not. The steel struts are not thick enough to be tapped and used in place of the nut (in my opinion). Although the bold and nut sizes are not true to scale they do replicate the full scale setup. It's held together the same way.

I maidened mine this weekend with a Saito 325 5cyl radial. Awesome! It's feels like the perfect power plant. 6 flights logged. It just putts around at half throttle which gives it that Harley grunt. Very happy with it.

This is the only pic I have at the moment. I have a video of it ticking away in the pits but the new format I can't figure out how to post it.

Looks good on there I would have through it would look big. How did it balance out? Did you add tail weight?

I Did have to add some in the very tail above the wheel. 8oz ish,. But not too bad. I located the battery for the onboard glow as far back as I could. The saito 325 is by no means a power house but it gives about perfect power for this plane. Maybe I am just not used to draggy biplanes but even with this bigger engine I still want to get up a head of steam before any maneuvers. The sound makes it worth while! I wish there was some way to put video on here without having to youtube it!

Carl,
Thanks for the strut info. The chance of losing a nut on assembly seems pretty high to me, just want to reduce the assembly time and make it easier. I might experiment with jb-welding nuts on the struts. Scale is not really a consideration - I bet the surfaces on the full size are all bolted fittings, nothing like the way we build models, so why would we have to follow only some full size practices?

On mine I used thread lock on the nuts and bolts and left them just loose enough to allow the brackets to swivel a bit (not "dangle" loose). When I take off the struts the brackets stay with the strut and I only remove the screw from the wing. Once the struts are off I put the screws back in the wings so I dont lose them. I thought about getting some sticky back magnet material and putting it somewhere in the fuse, but I dont thing its strong enough. There really isn't a way to lessen the amount of set up this bird takes and thats too bad as I would pull it out more often if there was!

Purchase an enclosed trailer. Great for hauling your big birds without disassembly( except for regular inspection) and they make great storage containers.

Would love to, but I would be forced to park it in the sun, and here in AZ, that equates to an EZ-Bake oven on wheels. I've seen people do it, but personally I don't like the idea of storing balsa, gas, batteries, and heat shrink covering in 150+ degree temps. Perhaps one day I will be able to build a 'carport' for it, got to get my kid thru college first! ( not much play money over the last few years!)

I just ordered a GP Stearman. I plan to power it with my ASP 400 five cylinder radial engine, I know that it will be over powered but one can always throttle back.

Best wishes and good safe flying.

HeliNuBee I bet you like the combination. The coolest thing is that you will be able to fly around at half throttle, I think radials sound sooooo good at that setting. especially on a classic bipe.
It should handle the weight. I have the boat anchor saito 325 on mine and it handles it really well.

Hey Chris, I'm sure I will be happy with the Stearman. I had the ASP 400 Radial engine in a CMP 80" Zero but the landing gear supports were to weak. The plane was quite heavy and it flew well but the landing gear mounts broke after each flight. I also have a GP Super Stearman powered by an FPE 40CC gas engine that performs very well. I also had a GP Curtis Hawk (before it decided to self destruct) powered by a PTE 36 gas engine that performed well too. Since I have experience with other GP Bipes, I think the PT-17 will work out well with the ASP 400. I do enjoy my radials, I have the ASP 400, a Saito 200 in a Sea Fury, a Saito 450 in a Gilmore Red Lion, and an UMS Evolution 777 in a BH Corsair, all are a lot of fun.

Best wishes and good safe flying.

I fly mine with an OS120 FS pumper with a flex pipe. Flys well and scale like and of course it's not overpowered. The OS flex pipe gives it a nice rich tone that isn't offensive at all, from a noise standpoint.

I started my PT-17 Stearman build yesterday. I can't hardly wait to get that ASP 400 5 cylinder radial engine back in the air. It sounds so good.

Best wishes and good safe flying.

Heli-NuBee,
Make sure you post some pictures of your build.
