RE: Top Flite P-47D Thunderbolt ARF .60-.91: Building & Mods
Funkymeter, Sorry you lost your plane. I have always thought you could have two flyers trying to hit each other and try all day long and not do it. Then you have two planes in the air and it happens accidently???
Your Razorback was outstanding. I am just finishing mine which is also converted to the Razorback and I think it is the neatest of all the Warbirds. My vote would be (did I have a vote?) that you build another Razorback as neat as the one you just lost. Maybe third time will be a charm and you will have an outstanding plane for years to come.
I am not a computer guy but I will get wifey to help me post a few pics of mine. I have recently become interested in Scale and my abilities are progressing with each plane. I used the earlier mentioned posts to convert to a Razorback with a Saito 100, had paint mixed to paint the cowl to match the plane, had nose art made in proper scale for the cowl, made flat black Rocket Tubes for each wing, received coaching from Ultimate2 on doing the indented panel lines and paint chips, used Dry Transfers for "Nomenclature" on the plane. I too used EFlite electric retracts for the mains, now thinking about going to a retract tailwheel next. Maybe?
I have a Hanger9 P40 and believe at this time there are no good electric rotating retracts available for it. I think you would have to go to air which I don't want to do. I am just waiting for some good electrics. So....build another Razorback!

Thanks Tom, you are right the odds were so against it. We just looked at each other and I asked, "did that really just happen"! I am leaning toward another p47, it really does fly great. Good luck with your build. The razorback version was built off of info on this thread the decals were from calliegraphics who did a really nice job. Look forward to seeing your work.

Hi all
Has anyone done a concealed battery switch setup on the jug? I was thinking of setting up one of the rear fuse vents to swing open as a door to access the switch.
Anyone tried something smarter?
Cheers for a great thread.

[8D] I installed the switch inside the model, close to the battery floor. This way it is possible to keep more scale the exterior. To turn on-off simple open the battery hatch that is holded by magnets.
And speaking of hatches and magnets, I must to glue a couple more magnets, cause yesterday when I was flying with the 108 gal. belly paper tank for a long range mission..., probably by the enemy...; ( I forget to conect the drop servo ), the tank doesn´t dropped but the hatch bail out during a roll....[:@][:@][:@][:@]

Nice Manolo, your bird is beautiful BTW!
Guys I have a few questions. I want to mod my p47 for a tail retract. I plan on using the Robart 121 and following a few of the mods I've seen here. Since this is my fist balsa, I'd like to know what type of fiberglass sheets and resin I should use? When I cut this out should the whole piece, including doors, or should I shape a piece of balsa to fit the opening and just use fiberglass for the doors? Where is the best place on line to buy balsa? What thickness should be used to re-skin? What torque range should I shop around for to use in the retract? I have eflite retracts for the front and wish Robart made and electric retract like they do for the giant

Got the hatch cut out:
It's a little rough looking, what should I use for filler? Some light weight spackling, wood putty, something else?
Is this a recommended product?
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXL482&P=ML
The whole process went rather smoothly, besides the rough spots going over the framers. The most nerve racking part was the back end of the hatch, trying to get between the two formers. I wound up using a flashlight from the inside to see the formers through the skin and stuck my X-ACTO knife between the two on the back end.

[8D]Yeap buddy..., at least that is what I used, Hobbico Hobbyfiller .... anyway for the pic you did also a good job..., with a little filler and carefully sanding things will look a tad better for sure...[8D]
I think the balsa sheeting on the fuse is 1/16 wide and the glass cloth must be one of the lighter ones...
Cheers.
Manolo.

Finished my hatch. It didn't turn out the way I thought, I think the seems have a large gap. I'm hoping some panel lines will help blend in access panel.
I'd like to pick up a book for detailing. I ran accross this one, wondering if anyone has it, and if its worth purchasing:

Here's what I did on my Aeroworks P-51 for concealing the switches, air valve, etc. The hatch is located on the fuselage belly, just aft of the wing saddle. It's hinged at the forward edge with Ultracote, both outside and inside the hinge line, and secured with magnets when closed. I realize it's in the exhaust stream, so I've carefully 'fuel proofed' the entire installation. Of course this is a gasoline engine, but the idea is the same as with a glowengine.Time will tell if this was a good idea or not...

How does one deal with mounting the aileron control horns. The aileron hinge line is not perpendicular to the aileron servo. As the aileron is deflected the control horn might cause binding with the servo clevis. Is this an issue? Pleae help!

Thanks for the replies, guys. I proly will use the robart type horns in stock location. However, it would be easy to build a new servo cover with an angled slot to be perpendiclular with the aileron.

[8D] Hi buddies. Just for sharing. Last saturday morning on our local club runway, we meet some Jugs pilots, a couple of TFs and another from KMP, one gas powered, another glow and mine; electric.
We have a lot of fun and really a good time....
A little vid....the best ... last landing... it was scale too...¡¡¡¡¡

RE: Top Flite P-47D Thunderbolt ARF .60-.91: Building & Mods
I received my Hacker A50 16L today and I'm in not sure if I should use stand-offs or the esprit mount I have. It doesn't look like I'd be able to use the prop collet without hacking the dummy radial using the espirit, so I know I'm going to be using the prop adapter and have the motor facing outward. What is the best way to mount the motor? Do I try and remove the blind nuts, plug holes, re-drill and use stand offs, or mound another piece of ply to front, just a little wider to use the espirit mount?

RE: Top Flite P-47D Thunderbolt ARF .60-.91: Building & Mods
Today's a holiday in Ontario (yay!) so I took my newly finished Jug out in the cold for a photo shoot. It was flown 3 times last fall and I've since been repainting and detailing. The Remfire 80 motor runs on 6S 5000's, retracts are Eflite .60-1.20's with RCSkylite struts and Dave Brown 3 1/2" wheels.
Many thanks to CorsairJock for starting this thread and all those who've contributed- it's been a tremendous help. For example, the secret hatch would certeinly have remained a secret to me, and the Dave Brown wheels, recomended by CJ, are for sure the best choice of appearance vs. weight.
Cheers,
Tom

RE: Top Flite P-47D Thunderbolt ARF .60-.91: Building & Mods
Anyone out here mod this P-47 to electric and do the razorback mod? I have and just realized that the razorback canopy now extends over the battery hatch. Curious as to how others coped with this dilemma in securing the canopy partially over the battery cowl and keeping the air out of the canopy. Thanks for reply or suggestions

Stickers - I've applied my stickers and the large blue army star keep peeling away from the fuse. Any tricks to keeping them stuck down?
I cleaned the skin before applying the stickers, the others on the flat surfaces of the wings appear fine.
Thanks

Hi all, I've been looking at or creeping on this thread for some time now, and I must say that those are some beautiful birds all of you have built! I purchased my own .60 size Jug this July and after researching and deciding on what I wanted in this bird several months past and this is the final result, For starters, I used your ideas & tips on panel lines, opened the top hatch for hiding the switches, and added a few ideas of my own. As for engine I installed an Evo. 20cc. gasser, Hitec 625 MG servos for control, Hitec Optima 9 Rec., Rcexel kill switch, Hobbico 2200Mah. Life Battery for power. So before winter ended my flying, I managed to get 3 flights on my T-bolt. When I work out the bugs I will post pics.
