There go them thumbs again. Got both. I've had it over 25 years. Looking rough and needs a paint job. Was thinking a ghost profile of a B-17 on the tank. Below that written, "REAL HEAVY METAL".

ORIGINAL: build it fly it crash it

Hi guys, I've been reading with interest this whole thread,I would love to do half as good a job as you all have.I think the job redbiscuits has done is one of the best looking I think I have ever seen ,the plane is a credit to your workman ship and only wish I could see it in real life. this thread has inspired me no end and I will keep it on hand for when I get to build my own.I would build the razor back though it is the most toughest looking ever.I think between redi, zor and mustangman there is knowledge to be learnt and I hope to use some of that in my build.

thanks again guys
Thanks for the kind words and welcome to the thread. Lots of talented builders in here, I been picking up stuff daily and that's what it's all about..

Thanks Anthony and Jimbo, the credit really goes to Mirce and his ingenious detail set. It gives an average builder like myself the ability to take it to the next level.

Gary,
I have been following the build and you have done an excellent job. Congrats. I am pulling stuff together for a Ziroli P47 and am trying to find flap hinges that areclose to scale without breaking the bank... I checked Mirce's out and Iflytallies has some. Does anyone know of any others? Robart has some fowlers but they are pricey.
Anyway just thought I would ask here as there are a lot of guys following your awesome build.
Thanks
Jeff

Meister Scale offers some, but not sure if they will work on the Ziroli. They are pricey too. http://www.meister-scale.com/Accesso...lapHinges.html

Went to Harbor Freight last night and they finally had the stand I've been wanting in stock.

redbiscuits,

I am puzzled looking at the hinges in the link. Fowler flaps, to my knowledge, extend backward at the trailing edge while acquiring a downward rotation thus not only increasing the wing camber but also the wings area.

The hinges I see do not accomplish that.

Gary,

Now you know the details (Panel lines, rivets, etc.) was worth it. You've raised the bar.

Those masks work pretty good. I tried making my own and that was a disaster. Missed a good day flying.

Question about the masks. How did they adhere around the rivets and panel lines? Did you have to burnish them down around the details? Lokks like zero bleed-through.

Thanks.

They did real good over the details, I rubbed them down pretty hard on the edges. What I also did is mixed up a tiny bit of clear and spray that before the color. What that does is seal the edge and if there is any bleed through, it is clear. You can also seal the edge with the color that is being masked. Say, if you're going to spray the white, hit it one more time with the blue, let that vapor off for 10min, and then hit it with white. You'll get zero bleed that way.

Looks really good Gary, and yes it was a good day for flying but it was a better day for painting

On the maskingwhat did you use to apply the stencils?, did you use Rapid Tac?

Here is a couple more showing the edges up close. You can see that by sealing the edge, the paint won't bleed up a panel line, and half a rivet is one color and the other half another. Pretty cool.

Tony, never heard of Rapid Tack, I need to Google that one.

Don't ya'll go calling me out on a few of the fisheye's that are in the blue. I was messing around with one of my glow engines before I painted, (yep, I'm a multi-tasker) and somehow got some contamination.

*Note to self*, don't play with glow fuel while painting...

Looks really good Gary,
How long after spraying before you removed the mask? The paint scheme on my Waco requires alot of masking.

I have been letting everything sit overnight before removing the masks. That's hard for me to do, I am my own worst enemy when it comes to painting. Took me forever to learn to just leave it alone and don't touch it.
On the website it says that you can speed the cure time with heat, I would think that an electric blanket could be used and cut the cure time in half.

I am the same way, can't wait to unwrap and see what is there. I will just have to force myself to walk away and leave it alone.
BTW: heat can cause orange peel. The surface dries faster then the paint underneath.
