Yesterday was a sunny day here in the PNW so out to the field I went. With some help the 190 was quickly setup. Gased up, choke on, flip the prop about ten times. Choke off, ignition on, throttle at Hi idle, a quick flip and the Moki is running. Sweet!

Pointed it down the runway and pushed the throttle forward. Down the runway it went. A shallow climb out with just alittle down and right aileron needed. After about two minutes and upwind the engine Died.[:@][:@] I found out later that something is wrong with the fuel tanks clunk as there is still over 3/4 fuel remaining but I can't pump it out.

Setup down the centerline of the runway but was carring alot of speed and going downwind. As I was running out of runway fast I set it down as lightly on the wheels as possible. Upon contact...... Rip. The gear total sheered out of the wing. On one wing the whole forward part sheered at the main wingspar. On hind site, retracting the gear and belling it in might have been better. The wing is rebuildable but I'm going to total it. The next wing i build for it, Version 3.0, will be a three piece split between the flaps and ailerons.

The plane flew very well and the incidence angles and thrust line were fine. With two degree of washout this plane showed no sign of tipstalling at slow flight. It flew solid and tracked great!

For now I'm putting it on the shelf as i need a break on. I'm going to start on my F6F and return to the 190 later.

Someone did take a video. Hope it doesn't show up on Youtube.

uuugghhh sorry Dave! That's always a drag. Would be great to see the video...you 'll have her flying again after a break. Would love to see her all painted up!

Dave,

Sorry to read that post. ButI dig your glass is half full attitude! I am building the Vailly, 90.5 version and I'm at the landing gear installation point. I have added (recessed) a slab of CF along the front of the 4 ribs, where the LG mounts,to add some more strength there. Looking back, would you consider anything additional...other than what is already called for in the plans?

Thanks

Thanks Matt.

Beasley, I changed the retract mounts from as shown on the plans as a rail mounted system to more of a platform mount. See pic. I really can't comment on the mounting as designed as i haven't built it in that size.

The biggest problem seems to have been that the ribs had to be hollowed out in order to allow room for the removable mainspar. When I build wing 3 the center section will be a one piece thus the ribs will be continues from LE to TE. This should solve the problem. I'll get it right yet.

Bummer Dave. At least it flies well! Sounds like you found out the things the FW doesn't like...no power and no flaps on landing, magnified by downwind landing orientation. This is usually a fair recipe for disaster on them, so you did well to limit the damage to that sustained probably. Good work I think. Keeping the thumper ticking should be the remedy you seek. I don't know of too many FW's that have survived without damage in similar instances. They'll land really well with flaps, power and into the wind. You should be fine with the arrangement of gear setup you have when things are as they should be on landing. I've never had a good experience landing them without flaps fully deployed.....even into the wind.

Was trying to take a break from the 190 and start another project but my eye kept going back to it. It seemed to be saying, "build me another wing and do it right this time". So I will.

The engine died because the fuel line came off the brass tube even though I used one of those spring keepers that act kind of like a clamp. I've never had one come off before. Possibly because of the heavier klunk?? Is there a better method of securing the gas fuel line to the tube? I was thinking of soldering on a "nipple" to the end of the tube.

The wing structure that holds the plywood plate to the wing held up fine. The plywood plate, 1/4 inch, failed and completely sheered itself off at the front edge of the retract. I will back up the plate with hardwood blocks and secure them better with screws to the main wing.

Also I'm going to make a three piece wing. This will make setup and transportation much easier.

My time frame will be to have it completed bt June.

And let the start of wing 3.0 begin.

No pics as I'm in California for another week.

The remaining wood for the wing should be arriving this week. In an effort to keep the tail as light as possible I used two layers of 1/8 light plywood for the tail retract mount. Well, it didn't hold either so I opened up the rear fuselage and removed it. I also installed 1/32" plywood over the balsa stab mounts and fiberglassed the inside tail section with three layers of 6 oz cloth using West System epoxy. The tail retract mount was constructed of two pieces of 1/8 five ply plywood epoxyed together and epoxied to the fuselage with trianguler stock. You would need a jackhammer to remove it now. I'm sure it added three or four ounces to the tail which means another pound in the nose but it will be worth it.

Can't wait to get going on the wing.

My other projects are finished so wing construction 3.0 has begun. I purchased a new desktop band saw to speed up cutting out the ribs.

I've also changed my mind... again... and will do a two piece wing. Seems like a shame to go to the trouble of hiding all the control linkages only to have a seam half way down the wing. Also I will be using a thick walled carbonfiber tube instead of the plywood built of sapr used on the last wing.

And back to cutting out ribs

Spars are completed and top of wing has been sheeted. Next is to secure retracts. Also note that top sheeting over the retracts is two sheets of laminated 1/32" plywood with a 1/16" balsawood cap.

I leaned the lesson of soldering tips on the brass tube inside the tank
I learned it the hard way
ended up almost like yours
I tried the spring thingey
i tried little plastic ties
NOTHING WORKED
take the time and put a bead on your brass pick up line
We all tend to kind of forget about the tube inside the tank
cant see it
just forget it
It will cost you
good luck on your rebuild
I am sure based on the way you build
it will be georgeous again

Good tip Hellcat. In don't know if it's a good idea or not but I've been now coating the brass tube with slow CA and slidding on the fuel tubing.

Wingspar,
I'm always interested in how people do things...  And I don't see any glue "mess" around where the ribs and sheeting meet.  Would you mind explaining your method of sheeting to this newbie?  Thanks!

Wingspar, sorry about the chrash,[:'(]

The same happened to mine on the third flight. The clunk sliding off the brass tube inside the tank.

Only remedy is to solder a flange on the brass tube.

I repaired it quite quickly. Here it was minutes after;

It was a terrible shock back then, but I guess we all have to go through that...[&o]

Spinner worked as a chrash cushing, totally flat. Fan survived, engine untouched inside cowling;

When I rebuild the tank I'll solder on a "nipple" onto the end of it. That should prevend it coming off.

Beasley.... Don't worry, there is alot of glue"mess" in my planes. Due to the size of the wing and the compound curves that it does I sheet it in 6" section. Any slight gaps I don't worry about as I will be coating the whole wing with drywall light mud and sanding it nearly off. This fills any gaps and low spots prier to fiberglassing with epoxy resin. Any remaining mud absorbs the resin making it rock hard.

KWIK - OMG don't show a crashed Vailly while I'm building one!!  How am I ever going to be able to fly mine with you scaring the bajeezus out of me.  OUCH!

And thanks for the close-up of your glue "mess"!  Thought you might have had some super secret "clean" way of sheeting...

Top wing is covered. Retract is installed using 1/2"x 3/4" hard maple rails reinforced on the sides with 1/8" 6ply plywood. That should? hold them in.

This should be a good time to start on the wing.
