I say no get an futaba 18mz it has a lot more power and can EASILY do everything the 18DX can very easily, however, you can open the radio up and do A LOT more as you grow the radio, sometimes people dive into the advance sections and might prematurely conclude programming is too hard.

the 18mz also has the most multimedia features, with the ability to take images, make voice annoncements letting you know if the gear is up or down, and has futaba telemetry and sbus.

But the 18MZ has more "power"... at least 1.2 gigawatts from it's orange flux capacitor.

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking... but I'm not a pro on the DSM2 modulation. Over on RC Groups, there is a Spectrum tech/software developer that posts. (AndyKunz)

Ignore the DSM2 data. I was told by Horizon that it's not relevant with a DSMX transmitter. Makes me wonder how relevant the flight logger is with DSMX.

This is a good thread. I have been loving my JR11X but now that JR is splitting the Spectrum camp and I'm not the DX18 becomes interesting. I really have no reason to buy but feel "pushed out" by the new upgrade to the JR11X. Believe it or not if you do the new downloadable upgrade for the 11X, you have to manually reenter the data for all your models! You can't use the SD card model memory transfer or computer interface after that upgrade, that is BS if you ask me. So to get up to spec I have to send the TX in to upgrade to DSMX and then upgrade the software at home (Horizon wont do it) and then manually reenter everything from screen shots or notes. I looked at getting a second 11X (for the communality and ease of transfer) in the classifieds but the used 11X Tx are hovering around 500. So a new DX18 is looking pretty good!
I assume the DX18 has the servo balance function primarily for giant scale but useful on any aircraft? Can anyone who has both and some time on the DX18 comment on the software comparison? I am actually not anxious to get DSMX, I have no problem with DSM2, but it couldn't hurt. I love that it uses Lipo's. But I am one of those guys that likes the heavy/solid Tx feel of a JR or Futaba high end radio. I guess I could put some lead in there

Its not actually that light but what is nice is the fact that you don't need a fancy bracket to balance it!
Yes, it does have a servo balancing function.

Actually, the part about having to reenter all your models manually following the upgrade of the 11X to V2.1 (the XG11 version) isn't correct. I helped a friend upgrade his 11X just this week and if you don't want to enter all your models manually you can simply save them all to the SD card. Following the upgrade, all of your internal model memories will be reset, but you are able to import them from the SD card. There were only a couple of my friends models that he was interested in saving but we copied them to the SD card and then read them back in following ht upgrade without any problems. You will need to rebind though.

I've been flying a JR12X for several years and I'm also very familiar with the 11X and the Spektrum DX18 which I recently purchased to replace my JR12X. About the only things that I've found that the 11X and 12X do that the DX18 doesn't is snap roll flight conditions based on stick position. Since I've never used that feature on my 12X I wasn't concerned that the DX18 didn't do it. Who knows, Spktrum may add that feature in a future software upgrade. Personally, I find the way the DX18 is programmed to be very straight forward. I've setup a couple of 40% Giant Scale aerobatics planes and also a couple of jets on my DX18. So far it hasn't been missing anything I've needed to get things the way I want them.

Interesting, I called Horizon product support and was advised to not use the model transfer feature. I was told that it is unsafe as sometimes the data does not transfer correctly, could have a glitch waiting.

Interesting indeed since the written instructions that they publish along with the download tell you to save your models to the SD card so they can be
imported back following the upgrade.

There are reports on RCG that DX18QQs with high numbers on the data logger need to be sent in for service. Not sure how accurate this information is. For other reasons I've decided not to use my DX18QQ with jets and instead will be converting my fleet over to the 18MZ.
