I have finished the hard work on the hand grips. A few more details and they will be complete for their owners to finish. It takes a good 8 hrs. to make one of these.

Hey Tom,
More outstanding art work! The pix look like little musical instruments.
Having watched you since you started in the hobby I am not as amazed as other builders at your expertise because I have come to expect it. Right from the beginning you were obsessed with detail and you continue to be. Plus the inane ability you have with wood and metal!
You are a great learner and not afraid to ask others for advice......imagine that, you asking advice. Goes to show your humility.
Taking a day to fabricate the control handle and have it come out looking like it does would take me three days and not look as good.
Everyone's time is valuable and hopefully you are getting handsomely rewarded for your efforts. It's like asking DaVinci to do a little painting for you.
Your old friend,
Jack C.

Your one of the very few who understand my insanity! It has been a long journey since the days at Central Ma R/C Modelers hasn't it. You were and are my first real buddy in the hobby, I have learned much from you also. Mostly your kindness and friendship would stand tall at the top of the list. To all who are in our hobby, friendships in what we do and learn from one another are priceless. For me it's not the models I build but the interaction with others who love what we do as much as I do.
Ya a sentimental posting today, but in this uncertain world we live in, it's ok once in a while.
God Bless All

I've seen it done both ways on reproductions. I have also seen it said both ways in books.
I myself would rather go all the way around, just makes better sense. But it is another thing to reshearch now that you've brought it up. Achim Ingels did his from the sheeting edge back, as in the pics.
Good question yes. The aerodrome would be a good place to ask.

TK, thanks for the reply. It just seems in all of my Fokker research I have never Seen this issue come up. The reason why I ask, is I am gearing up to build another 1/4 scale myself. I am not going for all out scale, but I am going to bash a BUSA kit pretty good. My previous 1/4 scale did not have rib tapes, but this time I will. I am so happy, I was able to secure a cowl from Glenn! I thought those had become "Unobtainium"!

I find it fascinating to look at these and wonder why each and every features was the way it was. For example, why is the left grip angles slightly off to the left? There is so much "life" in these grips.

I wonder what type of wood was used "back in the day" lol. Being a custom woodworker, I have access to most anything. I bet cherry would give a nice rich tone, that would darken with time. I will certainly be studying the photos as my new DR1 will have a full cockpit. Although I have done one already in my DVII, using Glenns cockpit kit, the details you have on these yokes are very clear and look great. Although I must say, reproducing them in 1/2 scale might be a little easier than 1/4. Will probably not take me quite as long though. They look great by the way.

HI Abu:
As has been shown through the years, the Germans did little that wasn't for a good reason, but you raise a good question.
IMHO It would be for the pilot's gloved hand to have room on the grip. But why a left grip at all? Is it a comfort thing.....I think not. Most likely it was the primary way for the pilot to steer and the right grip used mainly for firing the guns. There again there were knobs and levers that needed attention on bothh sides and front of the cockpit so a grip on each side would make sense.
Also, is the disc shaped connecting peice below the left grip an adjustment to, like, swivel the grip fore or aft??
See what happens when a Sopwith guy sticks his nose in.
Tom, what is the real reasoning?

The swivel thingie was because the throttle was operable from the left handle as I understand it anyway. Flying and firing the guns was mainly the job of the right hand but a two handed grip could be beneficial so a an aux throttle was mounted for the left hand. If I'm misinformed please excuse.

Im not sure what the Alby used but I seem to recall the Pfalz DIII had a pair of what looked like motorcycle grips mounted sort of pyramid style and the left one was an aux throttle that twisted just as a cycle. If you go on RCSB and look in the Proctor forum for John Witts build "Another Albatros" on page 21 there are some good pix of the stick and controls.
