Default Oil spatter

Hi All,

Please see accompanying picture. I am curious what you think the cause is and how to remedy the excessive oil spatter.

The oil is mixed at 50:1 and is a fully synthetic type. The engine has about twelve hours total operation time.

The engine makes awesome power at top end, idles nice and transitions well in the air. It hesitates slightly on the takeoff roll but after that no further problems. The plugs show dark tan in color as if slightly rich.

Most probably the least of your problems? More related to getting the exhaust away from the plane?

I agree with w8ye. I have dles, zenoahs, and mvvs engines that have way less run time and I use 32-1 penzoil. I don't have no where near that kind of oil residue. I would add a down pipe to the exhaust to get it a little more in the airstream away from the plane.

I get a little of that mess on the side of my P51 with DLE55 and Kelo muffler. I always thought it was from haveing the motor a little rich

The guy I fly with fought those speckles on his plane and all the different oils and mixtures never had a material effect on the speckles.

Other planes he eventually owned had very few oil speckles. It had more to do with the muffler outlet design and location.

What engine is it ?
Most of my engines run 40:1 and I only get a few specks on some and slight splatter on one that is still breaking in.
I have the Evolution 10CC engine and that thing runs 20:1 and has tons of residue during break-in and supposedly it takes a long time for it to lessen.
Make sure it's not running too rich and as mentioned ,use and exhaust extension/diverter.

I might collect that much after a few days of flying, especially after a lot of high alpha stuff where the air speed is lower. Faster speeds/planes mix that crap in with the prop wash better - blowing it back out of harms way?

Thanks for all your ideas. The engine is 150cc DA.

This is a question, not a solution, sorry. Is there a wax or something that can be applied to the area that acculates spatter that would makle the spatters more easily removed? Thanks.

I suggest re reading the second post. That oil speck is not at all bad for anything other than clean up. W8YE is right again...

WD-40 or gas/oil mix from your jug on a rag will wipe that stuff right off.

Simple Green Cleaning solution works good too.
If real bad, use at full strength.

Krud Kutter will wipe it right off. Lowe's and Walmart paint dept. has it. Doesn't seem to hurt the finish.

I've been flying gas for a long time and have been around DA too. I have never seen a DA do that. You said that it misses on take off. That tells me the engine is rich on the low end. The mess you have may be when the engine clears out on take off. When the engine clears out it will blow a lot of raw fuel and oil out. Dennis

Peter Goldsmith flys a DA 100 in his big Pawnee. It has a lot of gas/oil residue on it. Worse than the original poster. W8YE gave him good advise...Maybe it is some other DA's your thinking about?? Brian

DA's should not do that. Only other engines do.
Just My humble opinion

DAs don't have spatter, because they all run 100:1 Amzoil. No oil-therefore, no spatter

Two things come to mind. First it's a little rich on the bottom end. Hesitation on take off is a good sign of this. Second is what ratio does the oil manufacture suggest mixing?

I agree with the idea that the low end is rich. I run my Brison on Klotz synthetic oil at 50:1 and I have only tiny trace of exhausted oil.

It's a little odd how DA USA say to use amsoil and DA Australia say to use redline.

I agree with everything that has been posted here. One other thing I would look for is a loose bolt holding the engine down, at the muffler, or anywhere else in the engine area. If a bolt is vibrating even a little, or the muffler is loose, the vibrating turns the oil very dark and looks like this. I know, I've seen it on my models...

Worth a look..
