RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
Curious? What type/size battery are folks using for onboard receiver/servo power? After three good flights using a 2400 NiCD (6V 5cell) to drive (7) Hitec 645s the battery had dropped off to a level not acceptable to contiinue flying? New pack which had been cycled a couple of times and was charged before flying?

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
I'm currently using 3600mAh 6v NiMH packs for the receiver and servos.
I'm using 2200mAh 4.8v NiMH packs for the ignition.
I check or recharge the battery after 3-4 flights as I often fly this plane for 18 minutes at a time.
I'm about to move up to 4200mAh LiFe packs for the RX and Servos.
Yes this plane needs power to drive all of the servos, like any Giant Scale plane...

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
Just did the final hook-ups and balance after installing the new engine and landing gear. I replaced the CRRC 40 with a XYZ/Turnigy 50HP. The balance is exactly dead-on. The 40 had a lot of extra weight to make the
balance point (dead weight). The new gear allows for a little more comfort zone on the props.........I hit several Gopher mounds last summer and killed some props, Killed most of the Gophers over the summer (nuked them) and the rest are doomed.

Bruce, you're going to love the GUS & the DLE35. It's like they were made to be together (should be a movie?). Everyone at the field commented on the performance and wanted a turn at the sticks but the flight battery was tired and out of juice. I'll be replacing the 2400 NiCD flight battery with a 4000 NiMH this week. Thanks to all who posted to this thread as a lot of the info/pics you shared made building/setting up this plane a success. It was my first gasser/large scale model and hopefully will be in the stable for some time.

The good news is that I have bought a brand new one this weekend also aquired a nice new DLE 30 to mount on it, so the rebuild starts next week. I can say that I have put a full test on my carbon fiber push rods and they have passed the impact test!

Just be a bit concerned about weight distribution. With the servos located per the manual, and a DLE 30 up front, I put both batteries and the ignition system in the front hatch and still had to add over a pound of weight. If I had it to do over, I would build a box to extend the front out about 2 inches and then use the DLE standoffs and mount the engine.
I will say that even pulling that extra weight the DLE 30 performs great.

That is why I put my rudder servo in the tray under the wing, to reduce the amount of nose weight required. As it turned out I could have moved the elevator servo forward too but I like the shorter linkage. As it is by moving the rudder servo forward It reduced the required weight in half. I also use a set of DLE55 standoffs which move the engine ahead more than the DLE30 standoffs. There are pictures of my setup 3 pages or back. Post #346.

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
Scott,
I lost an Ultra Stick about a year ago, mine was even worse as it was into Asphalt, broke everything including batteries. I think I had a switch failure on the plane as everything went away, came back for a short time and then dead again..........
Over the years I have lost several planes to bad switches. I flew a lot off grass and some dirt which gets into everything. I just obtained an Ultra Hots that has not been flown for years, installed new servos and 2.4. The radio started acting
up and the servos were out of control. I ran thru everything and found the switch was the problem, this was yesterday. Glad it surfaced now!!!!
I sure can identify with your crash, sorry.

I added a pound myself, but the motor pulled it.

WellI don't know how well that would work. Because the standoffs have to be relatively small diameter to fit on the engine side, you may have some issues.
You might want to consider havong him build you some sort of extension box which you can bolt onto the firewall and then attach the standard stand offs to the box.

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
Ok, if I went that rouht and not sure I will then how far out should I build it out? My way of thinking of having the new stand offs built was to build them just like they are but longer so there for they should mount no differently than the originals would.
