I would say both gasoline and nitro wooden props were/are finished with a lacquer based clear. Perhaps the environmental wackos have changed that for some manufactures now.. When I balance I give the light side a shot of lacquer based clear.

Back when competing in CL precision aerobatics, we painted our props. Appearance points you know...
Composites were just coming into use, and of course they don't need clear coat, especially now. But every wood prop back then did the same thing. When you hit them with lacquer, the finish curdled. Thinner and wiping down was the first thing we'd do to get down to the wood. Got no idea what the wood prop mfgs use today.

I prefer the Vess Balance Ring method when balancing expensive carbon fiber painted or unpainted props. It's available @ your LHS or Chief Aircraft. Easy to use. Eliminates damaging the propeller's finish.

I always paint the tips of my props with white epoxy paint. If they need balancing, just put more paint on the light blade. By painting the tips white, it is much easier to see the spinning prop and makes it safer in my opinion.
